Boston, MA – Sprinkler system activates in spontaneous combustion fire at downtown office building

Firefighters believe a spontaneous combustion caused a small fire at a downtown Boston office building Thursday night, the fire department said. The fire started in a work room on the first floor of 50 Milk St. at about 8:55 p.m., said Steve MacDonald, a Boston fire spokesman.

“It generated a lot of smoke,” he said, but the building was otherwise not damaged, and the Friday workday should not be affected. The department believes some rags in the work room had spontaneously combusted. MacDonald said the rags had some solvents on them and were in a room that was poorly ventilated.

The room did have a sprinkler system, however, which activated when the fire began, MacDonald said.  Fire companies left the scene by about 10:15 p.m. There were very few people in the building at the time of the fire, MacDonald said.

San Luis Obispo, CA – Office building fire kept in check by sprinkler system; No injuries

Firefighters responded to a fire that burned through the stairs in the back area of a San Luis Obispo office complex Sunday morning, said San Luis Obispo City fire Chief Garret Olson.

Just after 11 a.m. firefighters responded to smoke in the area of the 1200 block of Higuera Street, Olson said.

Firefighters arrived on scene at the two-story office complex and found a small fire in the back area that had burned through the stairs and down into the office area. A fire sprinkler overhead held the damage in check until firefighters arrived, Olson said.

The fire damage appears to be confined to the stair area, and there is smoke damage throughout the building, he said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and appears to be accidental, San Luis Obispo City fire Engineer Mathew Polkow said. He added that the fire appears to have started inside of the staircase.

No one was injured in the fire.

New Canaan, CT – Fire in historic downtown commercial building contained by sprinkler system

New Canaan firefighters on Monday night put out a blaze that had broken out in the third story of a commercial building at the corner of on Main Street and East Avenue, prompting emergency responders to close the area to motor vehicle traffic.  It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the fire at 96 Main St., though it appeared to have started in the attic of the prominent downtown building, according to Fire Chief Jack Hennessey.

“Sprinklers assisted with putting out the fire,” Hennessey told NewCanaanite.com. “The sprinklers saved the day. It could have been a very, very serious fire. Right now we are making sure that we got all of the fire and we are dealing with the water damage from the sprinkler system.”

No one was hurt in the blaze, which drew multiple New Canaan Police and Fire Department vehicles—including Engine 1 and Ladder 2—at about 7:48 p.m., officials said.  The full extent of the damage could not immediately be assessed, Hennessey said, though it included structural damage in the attic and water damage on the third floor and possibly second floor.

“It’s dark and it’s still a mess, so it’s hard to tell,” he said.  The smell of smoke wafted down from the building on this windy Labor Day night, as some dozen people milled about the street and sidewalk below.

Police closed Main Street between Locust and East Avenues, and also directed eastbound traffic on East Avenue back down away from the scene.  The 1912-built, brick-exterior building—long known as the “Wire Whisk” space and currently occupied by both New Canaan Nails & Spa and Kaahve coffee shop on the ground floor facing Main Street, and Cava restaurant on a lower level around Forest Street—is known to longtime locals as the former base of Elliot Noyes & Associates, named for the Harvard Five architect who worked and resided in New Canaan.

Florence, OR – Possible arson fire at business center suppressed by sprinkler system

Authorities suspect arson as the cause of a fire in the Florence Business Center after eight fire starts were discovered inside a business on 12th Street.   At 6:41 a.m. Tuesday, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the business center after someone reported smoke coming from the building and water flowing from a sprinkler in the ceiling.

Within 5 minutes, firefighters arrived but discovered no fire because the sprinkler had put the fire out.  Authorities said it was “very obvious” that the fire starts were intentionally set.  Three fire engines, one firetruck, three support vehicles and 12 firefighters responded.

The structural damages are estimated at $25,000.  Anyone with information is asked to call Florence police detective Brandon Ott at 541-997-3515.
