Knoxville, TN – Fire in hotel room extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A Crowne Plaza hotel located on West Summit Hill Drive was evacuated early Monday after a small fire on the seventh floor that the sprinkler system extinguished, according to the Knoxville Fire Department.

KFD crews were dispatched to the hotel at 6:09 a.m. Monday for an activated fire alarm with sprinkler activation and Knox County E-911 dispatchers also received a call about the fire reporting smoke and flames on the seventh floor of the hotel. On arrival, KFD firefighters made their way to the seventh floor and discovered that the sprinkler system had put out the fire in one of the rooms, which was unoccupied.

KFD said all hotel occupants of the whole building were evacuated as a precaution. The Initial investigation revealed that the fire was quickly put out by the sprinkler system and did not appear to spread any further than the room of origin.

The hotel room has sustained heavy smoke damage, KFD said, and hallways and other common areas of the hotel sustained water damage. The building has been turned over to building maintenance. No injuries were reported.

This fire is currently under investigation by KFD officials.

Lafayette, IN – Sprinkler system extinguishes electrical fire at hotel

A malfunction of an electrical device has been determined as the cause of a hotel room fire early Jan. 16 in Lafayette.

According to the Lafayette Fire Department, firefighters responded to a call at about 6:30 a.m. Jan. 16 to the Courtyard by Marriott, 150 Fairington Ave., for a reported fire inside a hotel room.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had been extinguished by the hotel’s sprinkler system inside the room, which had been occupied. Fire officials said the occupants were able to escape the room. There were no reported injuries to the occupants or other guests in nearby rooms.

Fire officials said heat from the fire activated a single head from the building’s sprinkler system and doused the fire, preventing the spread of flames to other areas of the room or hotel.

Officials said firefighters ensured the blaze was extinguished, had not extended to other areas of the building and shut down the activated sprinkler system.

The Lafayette Fire Department credits a self-closing door, and the building fire sprinkler system with containing, extinguishing and limiting the damage and amount of toxic smoke created by this fire.

The suspected electrical device which fire officials said caused the fire was not specifically identified. The estimated amount of damage to the hotel room has not been determined.

Ann Arbor, MI – Sprinkler system activated for fire at hotel; No injuries reported

An Ann Arbor hotel was damaged Sunday night when a fire broke out in one of its rooms, causing the sprinkler system to activate.

Fire crews were called at 8:47 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, to the Holiday Inn, 3155 Boardwalk Drive, south of Eisenhower Parkway for a report of a fire in the building, according to the Ann Arbor Fire Department.

Crews arrived to find smoke coming from a second-floor room. They began preparing for stand-pipe operations, unloading fire hoses to be connected to a hydrant, officials said.

Firefighters located the source of the smoke, a vacant hotel room, and entered the room to discover the fire was being suppressed by the building sprinkler system, officials said.

A second alarm was initially called, but then canceled after fire crews were able to bring the fire under control, officials said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was determined to be an issue with the room’s ventilation system, officials said.

Guests of the hotel were displaced for the night and relocated to the nearby Sheraton hotel, officials said.

The Pittsfield Township Fire Department, Huron Valley Ambulance and the Ann Arbor Police Department assisted at the scene.

Tulsa, OK – Sprinkler system activated for electrical fire at hotel; No injuries reported

An overnight fire damaged a room at a historic hotel in downtown Tulsa.

The fire broke out around midnight on Thursday at the Ambassador Hotel near 14th and Main.

According to Tulsa firefighters, the fire started inside a room on the hotel’s top floor. Crews say it started behind an electrical outlet.

The room’s sprinkler system helped put the fire out and nobody was injured, officials say.

The Ambassador Hotel is on the national registry of historic places.

Calgary, AB, Canada – Sprinkler system extinguishes hotel fire; No injuries reported

The Calgary Fire Department responded to a fire at a hotel early Saturday morning.

Officials say crews were called to the Riviera Hotel at 3535 26 Ave. N.E. just before 7 a.m., finding smouldering furniture in a storage area.

The fire was knocked down by the hotel’s sprinkler system.

The hotel was evacuated as a precaution as crews ventilated the area and Calgary Transit buses provided shelter for the roughly 100 people forced out of their rooms.

No injuries resulted from the small fire and the hotel’s guests have since returned to their rooms.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time and investigators remain on scene.

North Myrtle Beach, SC – Sprinkler system activated for fire at resort; No injuries reported

Crews were on the scene of a fire at a North Myrtle Beach resort Sunday morning.

City spokesperson Pat Dowling said firefighters were called to the Beach Cove Resort on 4800 South Ocean Boulevard for reports of the blaze.

Dowling also said the fire was confined to the third floor and the sprinkler system was activated.

No injuries were reported.

Columbia, MO – Sprinkler system activated and 18 dogs rescued from fire at motel

The Boone County Fire Protection District rescued 18 dogs out of a Midway motel Friday morning, after responding to a commercial structure fire.

Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp told KOMU 8 that crews were originally dispatched around 8 a.m. to a reported fire alarm at the Budget Inn at Midway. It “quickly” changed to a commercial structure fire.

Crews saw smoke coming from the lower level of the two-story motel. 

Firefighters made entry to the motel where they found the fire in room 209. Blomenkamp said the sprinkler system was flowing in the room, helping keep the fire in check. 

Firefighters extinguished the remaining hot spots and rescued 18 dogs located in the room.

Blomenkamp said the investigation is ongoing.

KOMU 8 has reached out to Boone County Animal Control and the Central Missouri Humane Society for comment but has not heard back by the publishing of this story.

Los Angeles, CA – Hotel fire kept in check by sprinkler system

Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries suffered in a fire Sunday on the 22nd floor of the 33-story Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The fire appeared to be largely in or near a utility or service area (trash receptacle, ice machine, etc.) at the iconic structure, authorities said.

A third person treated at the scene declined further care, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched at 6:49 a.m. to the greater alarm blaze at 404 S. Figueroa St., Humphrey said.

The fire, which was held in check by the structure’s sprinkler system, was under control at 7:20 a.m., he added.

“Staff and patrons who calmly and safely evacuated the iconic building are now being provided hotel access, with patrol below the 22nd floor being allowed to return to guest accommodations,” Humphrey said. “Many of the 113 firefighters assigned to this incident are now working closely with hotel staff to manage residual smoke on floors 22-66 and localized water removal on floors 21 and 22.”

Riverside, CA – Sprinkler system activated for arson fire at hotel; No injuries reported

A man was taken into custody for allegedly setting fire to his room at a hotel in Riverside.

Firefighters were sent to the Hyatt Place hotel at 3500 Market St. at 10:09 p.m. Monday regarding “reports of (an) occupant in a hotel room trying to burn down his room he was occupying,” the City of Riverside Fire Department said in a statement.

“Firefighters arrived to find the hotel being evacuated, light smoke on the second floor and the hotel room door locked with a fire sprinkler activation,” the statement said.

“The environment was safe for RPD officers to assist firefighters with opening the door and securing the hotel room. Firefighters discovered a small fire in the hotel room extinguished by the fire sprinkler system.”

The suspect was not in the room but was found in the building and detained by Riverside police officers. His name was not immediately released.

Firefighters assisted hotel staff with water removal from several hotel rooms and a hallway. Four hotel rooms were affected by the water from the fire sprinkler system. Damage was estimated at $100,000, the fire department reported.

About 50 occupants were evacuated from the structure but were allowed to re-occupy their rooms by about 11 p.m., the fire department reported. Hotel management accommodated occupants who were displaced by the water damage to other unoccupied hotel rooms.

City of Riverside Fire Department Arson Investigators responded to the scene and working with RPD conducted an investigation that is still ongoing.

There were no injuries.

Ottumwa, IA – Fire at hotel quickly extinguished with help from sprinkler system

Crews continue to review and repair the sixth floor of Hotel Ottumwa after Monday night’s fire. Residents were evacuated from the building Monday evening as firefighters put out a fire in an elevator storage room and funneled smoke out of the building.

The hotel is now letting residents back in, though at time of publication the power is still off on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors. The elevator is shut off, with the hotel’s maintenance worker saying it likely won’t be back up until Friday.

Fire Chief Tony Miller says the fire was caused by an electrical issue in an elevator storage closet. An electrical meter corroded, sparking a fire, and catching a roll-up mattress in the room on fire. It activated a sprinkler on the 6th floor, which firefighters say helped in putting out the fire quickly.

However, Chief Miller notes these types of sparks can just happen from time to time. “Hotel Ottumwa is maintained pretty good, but occasionally you have an accident. And that was what this was: nothing but an accident. Between the fire department and health department, we inspect that place on a regular basis. So if there’s anything that’s off kilter, we take care of it and make sure it’s maintained like it should be.”

The fire department is reviewing the fire damage done to the room and sixth floor of the hotel. They also had to kick in a door on the sixth floor to rescue a resident. Chief Miller says they took two people to the hospital, both with smoke immolation.
