Further investigations found the fire to have sparked in a kitchen area, but it was contained and extinguished by the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system. Fire damage was limited to the kitchen, and there was water damage to nearby carpeting. Minor smoke damage was also limited to the kitchen, and no artwork housed within the museum was damaged by either the fire or sprinkler system. The city released a media alert regarding the incident that occurred in the early hours Friday. Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue responded to a fire alarm at the 100 Beekman Lake location at approximately 6:30 a.m. Crews reportedly found the city-owned and -operated building filled with smoke. The Heritage Museum building, built in the 1960s as the home of the Tarpon Springs Public Library and expanded in the mid-1980s, following the construction of the library’s current home on Lemon Street, has two wings. The History Wing traces the development of Tarpon Springs from prehistoric times through World War II.
