Apartment Building, Residential Alexandria, VA – Kitchen fire at apartment building suppressed by sprinkler system August 8, 2018 viking210 A small fire at the Huntington Gateway apartments on Richmond Highway on Tuesday night was quickly contained, but resulted in two residents being displaced. The fire was called in shortly after 10 p.m., and was contained to the kitchen in one unit on the 5th floor, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue spokesman. No residents or firefighters were injured. The fire started in the kitchen and was the result of unattended cooking, the spokesman said. An overhead sprinkler put the fire out. Damage was estimated to be around $500.

No one was in the apartment unit that caught fire, but 20 people were in the building at the time. No one was injured.
Apartment Building, Residential Spokane, WA – Overnight fire at downtown apartment building controlled with help from sprinkler system August 2, 2018 viking210 Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit team members are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a downtown apartment building early last Saturday morning. It happened on the 300 block of W. 2nd Avenue just after 1:00 a.m., according to Public Safety Communications Manager Michele Anderson. A fire was reported inside a second floor apartment and spoke was spreading throughout the upper floors of the four-story apartment building. Anderson went on to say that the sprinkler system had activated and a fire was found and extinguished inside the apartment. One person was treated at the scene for slight smoke inhalation, according to SFD. There were no reported injuries to firefighters. Fire investigators and Spokane Police have questioned a person of interest. Anyone with information about the fire should call 509-625-7000. The American Red Cross responded to help displaced occupants. Anderson said that when crews started evacuating residents, they found that most of the people living in the building did not leave when the fire alarm sounded. The Spokane Fire Department would like to remind to always do the appropriate thing when a fire alarm sounds and evacuate to a safe location outside the building.
Apartment Building, Residential Canby, OR – Balcony fire on third-floor apartment extinguished by sprinkler system August 2, 2018 viking210 Residents woke to a fire on the balcony of their third-floor apartment Thursday, Canby Fire District said. The residents went to grab a fire extinguisher from outside the door and when they returned, the fire was under control thanks to a sprinkler a tenant discharged. The sprinkler completely extinguished the flames. “Without the fire sprinkler system this fire would have grown before we arrived and would have caused severe damage to the structure and displaced several tenants all the safety devices working smoke alarms, fire sprinklers and properly placed fire extinguishers at this apartment complex made a difference tonight,” Nikki Hietschmidt, Canby Fire District captain, said. Crews were dispatched to the fire, but the sprinklers controlled it before they arrived.

They say the fire appeared to have started on the 2nd floor balcony of an apartment. KFD says the sprinkler system had the fire contained by the time firefighters arrived. There was smoke and water damage to one apartment. KFD said, as a safety reminder, it is against fire codes to grill on a balcony of a mutil-family dwelling. Grills must be at least 15 feet away from any structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No injuries were reported.

There were no injuries, but the fire displaced two families.

First responders were called to a building along the 800 block of 15th Street S., adjacent to the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, around 5 p.m. today (Wednesday). Firefighters believe the blaze started on the eighth floor of the building, according to a tweet from the department, and they were able to quickly extinguish it. There’s no word yet on any traffic impact or injuries.

The call came in shortly after 9 a.m. for a fire in a third-floor apartment in the 600 block of Hamilton Street. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke on the building’s third floor, according to a crew on the scene. The apartment’s sprinkler system knocked down the fire and contained the fire damage to the kitchen. The apartment sustained smoke, water and heat damage. A second-floor apartment and the first-floor commercial space also sustained some water damage. No injuries were reported.
Apartment Building, Residential Franklin, TN – Sprinkler system extinguishes apartment fire July 17, 2018 viking210 A Franklin woman’s pet cat will live to see another day after a kitchen fire nearly destroyed the unit. Officials say the fire happened around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Grove at Shadow Green apartments off Columbia Avenue. The fire was started when a burner on the stove was left on, igniting the microwave and other combustibles around the appliance. The blaze was extinguished by a single automatic fire sprinkler, officials say protected the other occupants in the three-story, 30-unit complex. “We are thankful the fire sprinklers performed as designed – preventing a much different outcome for the pet and the other families living in the building,” said Franklin Fire Marshal Andy King. “The Franklin Fire Department encourages all prospective tenants to choose apartment complexes with fire sprinklers when possible. They are lifesavers.” When responders arrived on the scene, they first rescued the tenant’s cat and then ventilated the unit and turned off the sprinkler. The tenant was not home at the time of the incident. She returned after neighbors notified her about the fire. The unit below also suffered water damage. Officials estimate the damage to the two units at around $25,000.

The fire was reported at an apartment complex on Vintage Way. Officials say the automatic sprinkler system and a portable fire extinguisher quickly put out the fire. Firefighters will remain on the scene for an undetermined amount of time. Officials say there was only minimal damage to the apartment.
