Greeley, CO – Arson fire at apartment 70-unit complex extinguished by sprinkler system

A woman is in jail after police say she set fire Tuesday evening to an apartment after an argument with her husband. Mindilynn Zekan, 39, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson after a fire at the Meeker Commons Apartments, 505 9th Ave., according to a news release from the Greeley Police Department. An engine, ladder truck and battalion chief responded to the fire about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

By the time crews arrived, no one was inside the apartment and the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire, according to a Greeley Fire Department release. After shutting down the water flow to the activated sprinkler, crews ventilated the apartment to remove smoke and residents were allowed back into the building that night. The complex has more than 70 apartments and more than 100 residents.

Zekan was present at the scene and interviewed about the incident. Greeley Police say Zekan was upset about an argument with her husband and began setting his property on fire. Zekan was taken to the Weld County Jail on suspicion of first-degree arson. She remained in custody Wednesday morning pending an appearance in court. The dollar amount of fire and water damage has not been established.

Yuma, AZ – Apartment fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported and fire damage limited

The Yuma Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Tuesday morning that was extinguished by a fire sprinkler. YFD said just before 10 a.m. firefighters arrived to find an extinguished fire that started on the stove top due to an unattended pan of oil. YFD said the sprinkler head was shut down by YFD personnel who also confirmed the fire was extinguished and had not spread. Firefighters worked quickly to vent the heat/smoke from the apartment and remove the water that had been released during the activation. Most house fires start in the kitchen and the stove top is the most common place for these fires to start. Due to the sprinkler system quickly extinguishing this fire, the fire damage was limited to soot stains on the wall behind the stove and heat damage to hood above the stove, according to YFD.

Rock Island, IL – Sprinkler system stops apartment kitchen fire

A Rock Island apartment building is still standing tonight because of a fire sprinkler. Rock Island Fire Marshal Greg Marty said a stove fire started on the third floor of the Sala Apartments at 2:30 today. The <fire> triggered the sprinkler system, which put out the flames before firefighters arrived. Marty said this is why every house should have a smoke detector and a sprinkler system.

“This lady’s going to get to stay in her own apartment tonight,” Marty said. “She’ll get to sleep in her own bed. You know, the cleanup is going to be with a mop and a bucket instead of potentially millions of dollars worth of damage and potentially other lives lost.” Marty said apartments have been required to have sprinklers for years. The City of Rock Island just made it mandatory that all new homes be built with sprinklers last year. It is the only Quad City to do so.

EARLIER VERSION: Three fire engines are outside the Sala apartment building in downtown Rock Island. A battalion chief says there was a small stove fire in a unit on the third floor, but it was contained by the sprinkler system. No injuries reported so far.

Liberty Lake, WA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at unfinished apartment complex; No injuries reported

An apartment complex that was under construction in Liberty Lake was seriously damaged after a fire.

The fire was reported to have started in a full size pickup parked next to the building. The fire spread from the pickup to the complex, which was in the final stages of construction and unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to the complex in the 21900 block of east Country Vista Dr. Friday evening.

When crews arrived, they found a Liberty Lake police officer, an off-duty Fire District 9 Lieutenant and the complex’s maintenance man using fire extinguishers in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

They weren’t able to put out the fire despite using six extinguishers. However, the Spokane Valley Fire Department said their efforts weren’t in vain, as they helped slow the fire growth, buying crews more time.

The fire department says the building’s construction also played a part in slowing the spread of the fire. The building was equipped with a working sprinkler system.

The garage also had two layers of 5/8 gypsum board on the walls and ceiling, which prevented the fire from extending into the wood framing of the building.

The reason the pickup burned is still under investigation and extensive damage occurred to the pickup and the front of the building.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
