Cohoes, NY – Sprinkler system contains fire on 10th floor of apartment building

A section of the Cayuga Plaza Apartments were evacuated early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out.

Officials say the fire began around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. The fire department evacuated a wing of the 10th floor, opening a nearby senior center to those who were displaced.

Many returned to their apartments by several hours later. Officials say everyone should be able to return to their apartments by the end of the day, except for those in the unit where the fire broke out. That apartment has smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the apartment supervisor says the sprinkler system did go off. Some of that water has filtered down from the 10th to the first floor, where service crews are working to clean it up.

The Red Cross is at the scene assisting those residents still displaced from their apartments.

Rapid City, SD – Sprinkler system puts out mattress on fire at apartment; No injuries reported

Two people were displaced following an apartment fire that broke out in Rapid City.

According to the Rapid City Fire Department (RCFD), the fire broke out around 2 p.m. Sunday inside the bedroom of one of the Palms Apartments in the 700 block of Flormann Street, across the street from Safeway on Mount Rushmore Road.

Jim Bussell, public information officer for the RCFD told KOTA that when firefighters responded, they saw a mattress was on fire.

He confirmed the sprinkler inside the bedroom put the fire out.

Bussell said 30 to 35 residents live in the building and “all of them would have been at risk if it wasn’t for that sprinkler system.”

Both residents in the apartment made it out safely and there were no injuries reported.

In the meantime, American Red Cross is stepping in to help the displaced individuals.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Healdsburg, CA – Single fire sprinkler contains apartment fire caused by toaster

An apparently faulty toaster sparked a Healdsburg kitchen fire late Monday afternoon and displaced three people, Healdsburg fire officials said.

The Grove Street apartment fire at the north end of town was reported about 5:30 p.m. and led to the evacuation of the nine‑unit building at the Oak Grove Apartment complex.

Arriving firefighters went into a ground‑floor apartment and found it full of smoke, but thermal imaging equipment helped them spot two small dogs, which were carried to safety, Chief Jason Boaz said.

When the apartment residents arrived, after getting word of a fire at their home, they found the dogs out and safe but told firefighters there still were two parakeets inside. Firefighters retrieved the birds and all of the animals were unharmed, said Linda Collister, city fire marshal.

Firefighters doused the flames, ventilated the apartment and moved personal property out to reduce smoke damage.

Damage was kept to the kitchen and estimated at $50,000, said Boaz, who credited the room’s single overhead sprinkler with making the initial difference between a small fire and what could have been a serious apartment building fire. Residents in the building’s other apartments were allowed home once firefighters were done.

A preliminary investigation pointed to the toaster, which was not in use at the time of the fire, as the likely cause.

Aiding Healdsburg firefighters were Cal Fire, Sonoma County, Geyserville and Cloverdale fire agencies.
