Davenport, IA – Overnight fire at memory care center put out by sprinkler system

A fire was sparked inside a resident’s room at the Country Manor Memory Care in Davenport on West 46th Street. It happened around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, Fire Chief Paul Hartman said. The fire was contained and put out quickly by the building’s sprinkler system. Everyone in the building is safe. It’s unclear what started the fire.

Brockway, PA – Fire at health care and rehabilitation center held in check by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

In Jefferson County, a fire at a health care and rehabilitation center is still under investigation.

Fire officials say the fire was contained to the kitchen of the Highland View Healthcare Center.

According to the Brockway Volunteer Hose Company, the fire had been held in check by the sprinkler system.

Officials say the fire was ruled incendiary in nature.

They estimate damage totaled about $5,000.

No injuries were reported and the owner does have insurance, officials say.

Columbia, MO – Fire at Planned Parenthood extinguished by sprinkler system

Police believe somebody intentionally set fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic early Sunday in Columbia, Mo. 

Firefighters first arrived at Planned Parenthood-Columbia Health Center, at 711 North Providence Road, around 4 a.m., according to a press release.  

An investigation showed that a sprinkler system put out the fire. Officials said the “small fire” was suspicious. Other details of the fire were not released, and authorities did not discuss a possible motive.

The clinic no longer offers abortions after new requirements went into effect last year. It provides birth control, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and the morning after pill.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the fire to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573-874-7652.

Maryville, TN – Sprinkler system extinguished fire at doctor’s office; No injuries reported

A small fire broke out in a doctor’s office on the third floor of Blount Memorial Hospital’s Physicians Office Building Wednesday.

There were no injuries, but the building was evacuated for approximately 90 minutes.

The fire began around 11:30 a.m. when a radiator lit up a nearby chair. The fire spread to the wall, but was put out by the sprinkler system before the Maryville Fire Department arrived.

Still, there was considerable smoke, Deputy Chief Mike Caylor said.

Because the room’s windows would not open, fans were used to blow the smoke into the building’s main atrium, where it was exhausted by the ventilation system there.

Firefighters monitored carbon monoxide levels throughout the hospital but found minimal readings.

“The hospital did a good job making sure we could get people out of harm’s way,” Caylor said.

Hospital spokesman Josh West emailed The Daily Times that the physician offices in the building have been closed to begin cleanup. Some patients who had appointments were rerouted to different offices, while others were rescheduled.

“We apologize to our patients who were inconvenienced,” West wrote. “While this incident was unfortunate, we’re grateful no one was injured. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Maryville Fire Department, and Maryville Police Department, both of which responded immediately to help ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and staff.”

Spencer, IA – Sprinkler system extinguished fire sparks at hospital; No injuries reported

Staff were cleaning areas of Spencer Hospital Tuesday impacted by smoke damage from a small equipment fire Monday night.

Hospital officials said they hope to reopen the surgical center, the area of the hospital where the fire broke out, later this week. Scheduled procedures were canceled Tuesday and Wednesday. All other hospital services were available Tuesday.

“Caring for our patients is always our number one priority and today we also had team members busy cleaning areas within the hospital which were impacted by smoke damage, sterilizing equipment and replacing linens,” Spencer Hospital President Bill Bumgarner said in a statement Tuesday.

Bumgarner said the surgical center will reopen once a deep-cleaning process is completed and approval is received from the state fire marshal’s office and the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, which oversees healthcare facilities in the state.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, a hospital staff member in the surgical equipment sterilization area smelled smoke and noticed sparks escaping from one of the washer units. A fire alarm was pulled and the sparks were extinguished by the sprinkler system by the time firefighters arrived. Due to the spread of smoke in other areas of the hospital, 16 patients were transferred to neighboring facilities. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Kamloops, BC, Canada – Arson fire in newly built supportive housing building extinguished by sprinkler system

Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly setting fire to a room at the newly built Mission Flats Manor on Tuesday night. Kamloops Mounties and firefighters responded to the supportive housing building at 805 Mission Flats Rd. at approximately 10 p.m. RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said the fire appeared to have been purposely set in one of the rooms of the building and officers arrested a male suspect at the scene.

“Surveillance video shows a male in the area of the fire just minutes before the fire alarm was activated,” Shelkie said. Kamloops Fire Rescue Insp. Kevin Cassidy said the fire began in the washroom of unit 221, on the second floor, where a running propane-powered blow torch was left running up against a wicker laundry basket. He said a sprinkler in the room extinguished the fire, which is considered arson.

No one was injured or displaced by the fire, to which 14 firefighters responded. “Everyone was back in right away,” said Cassidy. The fire was contained to the laundry basket, Cassidy said, noting firefighters checked to ensure there was no extension of flames before clearing the scene.

Shelkie said police are not disclosing whether the suspect is a resident of Mission Flats Manor. The RCMP has sent all investigative information has been sent to the Crown to determine if arson charges will move forward.

Middletown, NY – Fire in hospital’s kitchen extinguished by sprinkler system

One employee was hurt by an explosion while attempting to light a stove in the kitchen at Orange Regional Medical Center Thursday morning. Dominick Guardino, chief of special operations for the Mechanicstown Fire Department, said the explosion was followed by a small fireball, but the fire was quickly contained by the hospital’s sprinkler system. “We just shut off the gas and electric when we got there,” Guardino said. Several mutual aid companies who were responding to the scene were canceled because they were not needed. The injured employee was taken to the emergency room at ORMC. Guardino referred questions about the employee’s condition to the Town of Wallkill Police Department, which is investigating the fire. No one at the police department could be reached immediately.

Jacksonville, FL – Hospital fire put out by sprinkler; Fire started in air handling unit, no injuries reported

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department has responded to a fire at Baptist Hospital in Downtown Jacksonville. According to JFRD, the fire has been controlled and they are working to clear the smoke. Rescue units have been requested to possibly move affected people. Everyone is safe and there are no reported injuries, according to Baptist Health. According to Chief Eric Kurtis, the fire started in an air handler in the pavilion where new moms check in. When the fire started, the sprinkler head above it put it out.

JFRD were called through the smoke alarm. According to Kurtis, no one was hurt. He says at least seven moms initially went to a stairwell to escape the smoke. Babies in neonatal were also moved but everyone is back where they belong. JRFD said that no transports were made from the hospital and there is still smoke and water in the lobby.

Beverly, MA – Sprinkler system helped knock down fire at rehab center

Firefighters extinguished an early morning fire in a resident’s room at the Blueberry Hill Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center Sunday.

Two patients were taken to Beverly Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after the 3:20 a.m. fire, Beverly fire Lt. Matt Hart said in a release.

Firefighters arriving on the scene were met with heavy smoke in the room and halls. After a quick search, the patient was found and taken out of the room by firefighter Pete Davis.

The sprinkler system was activated, which helped to knock down the fire, Hart said. While the fire was contained to one room, the smoke and water damage affected the entire wing.

Huntingdon Valley, PA – Fire in nursing care facility extinguished by automatic sprinkler system

A small fire at a nursing care facility in Montgomery County prompted an evacuation of 110 residents Wednesday night.  The fire started around 9:15 p.m. at ManorCare Health Services at 3430 Huntingdon Pike in Lower Moreland Township.

Officials said the fire started in an air conditioning unit in one of the rooms and was quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system.  Along with ManorCare employees, Montgomery County emergency management and several fire and EMS companies helped the more than 100 residents out of the building. Forty four people were transported by bus to other ManorCare facilities in the area. The remaining residents were able to return to their rooms.

“Obviously, this is a care facility, so you have folks who have ambulation issues, but the folks from ManorCare and our EMTs are taking care of everybody very well and making sure everyone is safe,” said Paul Randolph, chaplain and public information officer for Huntingdon Valley Fire Company.  One male ManorCare employee was treated at scene for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital for evaluation.  No residents were hurt.
