Corbin, KY – Apartment fire extinguished by sprinkler system

Approximately 30 residents at a downtown Corbin apartment building were forced to evacuate the building just before Midnight Tuesday when a fire was sparked in a storage room.  Corbin firefighters were called to Cooper Health Apartments at the intersection of Main and Gordon streets when a fire alarm was activated.

Battalion Chief Larry Jones stated the fire was sparked in a small storage room off of the main office on the first floor by some type of electrical malfunction.  Corbin Fire Chief Barry McDonald said a sprinkler head broke off sending water pouring onto the fire, extinguishing it.

The sprinkler system had to be shut down because of the broken sprinkler head. With the system down, maintenance personnel had to establish a fire watch until it could be repaired.

Layton, UT – Sprinkler system stops grease fire at apartment building

A mother and her three children should be able to move back into their apartment, with their possessions virtually intact after a fire last week, thanks to an automatic sprinkler system that held a grease fire to the stove top.

Layton fire crews were called to the fire at the Grayhawk Apartments, 2925 N. Church Street, where they found the woman standing outside her apartment building.

“Fire crews found water coming from the second story landing of the complex,” Bitton said. “They entered the apartment and found one activated fire sprinkler running above the stove top and charred remains of a pan with tortillas in the sink.”

Fire crews have seen numerous incidents where tenants would be displaced from their living space and their personal items and furnishing damaged beyond use without sprinkler systems, Bitton said.

“Although devastating for this mother and her children, they can reoccupy with no significant fire damage spread,”Bitton said.

The apartment complex’s sprinkler system is designed with a calibrated premix of glycerin to ensure there would be no freezing in the attic or breezeway areas, something Bitton said Layton fire officials are impressed with.

Muncie, IN – Sprinkler systems helps extinguish fire in loft apartment building

Terry Moore, Muncie Fire Department battalion chief, said a woman was in the process of moving her mother into an apartment on the seventh (and top) floor of the former Roberts Hotel when she placed a bag of clothing on the stove — and apparently accidentally turned on a burner.  The resulting fire was for the most part extinguished by a ceiling sprinkler.  Fire damage was minimal.

“The sprinkler did what it is supposed to do,” the battalion chief said. A few tenants, some in wheelchairs, stayed outside the building for several minutes.

Minneapolis, MN – Sprinkler system activates to help contain high-rise apartment fire

A fire in a high-rise apartment building on the 300 block of Lowry Avenue North was reported just before 4 p.m. Monday.  The sprinkler system activated to help control the fire. Minneapolis Public Housing was called to the scene to help residents who will be displaced as a result of this fire and water from the sprinkler system.

Sisters, OR – Apartment fire extinguished by single sprinkler head

A kitchen fire was quickly extinguished when the fire sprinkler system activated and put out a fire at 555 N. Larch St. in Sisters last week. Occupants were frying food on the kitchen range in high temperature oil and then left the kitchen for a brief time, according to statements from the residents. Residents were then alerted to the smoke alarm sounding. When the residents returned to the kitchen they saw three-foot flames above their frying pan.

The fire only activated one sprinkler which extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived. Fire Chief Roger Johnson is thankful that the apartment complex was equipped with a fire sprinkler system; without it there is a very good chance the fire would have consumed the apartment or even the building.

Charleston, SC – Fire department credits single sprinkler for extinguishing apartment fire

Fire officials have been able to determine a single fire sprinkler head was able to put out a fire in a apartment complex in downtown Charleston.  Crews with the Charleston and North Charleston Fire Departments, Charleston County EMS, and Charleston Police Department were called out to a possible structure fire at North Central Apartments at 1054 King Street.

Arriving units were advised of a possible kitchen fire in a second floor apartment. Fire officials on scene say the fire sprinkler located in the kitchen of the apartment had extinguished a fire on the stove.

“The fire sprinkler system was again a very important tool in this incident,” said Fire Chief Karen Brack. “Without this fire sprinkler system the fire may have grown in size injuring the resident and other tenants of the building. The fire sprinkler system extinguished the fire and ensured the life safety of all occupants in the building.”

Fire damage was limited to the stove area with minimal smoke and heat damage. Officials say the resident received no injuries due to the fire.  Officials say this is the second incident in two weeks that a fire sprinkler system has extinguised a growing fire in a multi-tenant occupancy in the City of Charleston.

Salisbury, MD – Laundry fire in apartment complex doused by sprinkler system

A clothes dryer was blamed for an early Saturday fire that damaged an apartment unit at Riverside Court and displaced the occupant, the Salisbury Fire Department has reported.  A sprinkler system kicked on, controlling the blaze until a dozen firefighters arrived, said Salisbury Assistant Chief Bryan Records.

No one was reported injured, and six other apartment units in the immediate vicinity were not condemned, he said. The fire was confined to a laundry area inside a unit at 720 A Riverside Road.
