Crews arrived on scene and encountered the fire in the facility’s laundry room where it was contained by the fire sprinkler system,
No injuries and little damage are being reported as of late Tuesday.
Firefighters remained on scene searching for any remaining fire, venting smoke and checking the sprinkler system.
“Although the fire was limited, our department will continue to remain on scene and work with Medilodge staff to get back to normal,” said the department’s Twitter feed.
The Emagine Theatre posted on its Facebook page they will open Tuesday at 4p.m.
The Emagine Theatre in Birch Run was evacuated Monday night due to a report of a fire in a bathroom.
A firefighter tells Mid-Michigan NOW there was a fire in the women’s bathroom.
A sprinkler put the fire out and caused some water damage.
“No guests were harmed in the incident. A patron was smoking in the restroom, threw the cigarette into the trash and it caught on fire. Staff reacted immediately and the fire was extinguished. Emagine is expected to be open for business as usual tomorrow,” said Emagine Entertainment CEO Anthony LaVerde.
The fire happened around 6:58 p.m. in the 6800 block of Brindle Heath Way. Firefighters arrived to find a sprinkler had already extinguished the fire. There were no injuries.
Investigators determined an overheated computer processing unit caused the blaze. Damages were estimated to be $1,500.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire sprinklers can save lives and property by reducing the heat, flames, and smoke caused by a fire. While fire sprinklers have been a longtime method for commercial buildings, fire officials recommend installation in homes as well.
The library remained closed through Monday for cleanup following the fire, and reopened with regular operating hours on Tuesday.
Charlevoix Township Fire Department Fire Chief Dan Thorp said that if it was not for the library’s sprinkler system — and given the time of day that it started — “the entire library could have burned down and they would probably have had to build a whole new library.”
“It would have been a good half-hour before anyone even noticed it burning. It is an old building with all the books — it would have had to be rebuilt,” Thorp said.
Thorp commended the library for its maintenance of fire suppression equipment, noting that “the library has done an outstanding job in keeping their equipment up to date.”
The fire chief said his department got called to the library for a fire alarm activation at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.
“We were there until about 1:40 a.m.,” he said.
Thorp added, “By the time we got there and got into the building we heard water running and saw smoke that was coming out the front door.”
The fire chief said the sprinkler system had already put the fire out by the time firefighters entered the building.
“As we investigated, we saw that on the second floor in the director’s office area they had two humidifiers and the one on the lower level, powered by electricity, had some malfunction that we are not quite clear of,” said Thorp. “That malfunction caught on fire and there was a sprinkler head in that room which then was activated and put the fire out.
“The fire department did not have to spray any water to put out the fire.”
When firefighters walked into the building, only the sprinklers in the mechanical closet in the director’s office on the second floor were activated.
Thorp said, “Wherever the fire is, it reaches a certain temperature and sets the sprinklers off in that location.”
Charlevoix library director Ryan Deery said none of the technology or book collections were damaged. The only fire damage occurred in the maintenance closet and water damage occurred in the hallways on the first and second floors, said Deery, also stating about an inch of water flooded both floors in those areas.
Deery said clean-up company Serv Pro was on scene immediately the following morning and set up dehumidifies, heaters and other equipment which ran all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
“Most of the items do not need to be replaced.” said Deery. However, “some of the walls may still have water in them”. Serv Pro will be assessing the scene on Feb. 19 to determine if further steps need to be taken to rid the walls of moisture.
On Facebook, the library noted that Servpro was helping with the fire follow-up, and indicated: “We are confident that all the collections are safe and did not sustain any damage.”
A Sunday post on the library’s Facebook page read, “Thanks again to all of your support and offers of help. We are incredibly thankful both that the damage was not worse and that we are able to continue functioning as the hub and heart of the community so quickly.”
Deery said he is heartened by the outpouring of support from the community.
At 8:45pm Coppell Fire Department was dispatched on an automatic fire alarm to a day care facility. CFD units arrived approximately 4 minutes later with very light smoke inside the structure. Crews began a search at the front door, immediately hearing the activated fire sprinkler head. Firefighters saw remnants of a ceiling mounted exhaust fan burning. They ‘pulled the ceiling’ exposing burned roof members and the activated automatic fire sprinkler head. The single fire sprinkler head extinguished the fire.

Two fire trucks went to 6205 Dell Road at 8:12 p.m. in response to a water flow alarm after sprinklers went off in Best Cleaners, assistant chief Kurt Buchanan said. A bin of laundry had caught fire, but nothing else in the building burned and the responders’ main tasks were to ensure the bin was extinguished and clear the building of smoke and burnt materials, he said.
“It’s a good story, that sprinklers make a difference,” Buchanan said. “They’re designed to keep fires at bay.”
The fire department contacted Best Cleaners and the owner of the strip mall, which also houses Venice Nails and a Holiday gas station, Buchanan said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Buchanan said.
The La Crosse Fire Department was called to the Gateway Terrace Condominiums at 100 North 6th Street at 9:18 a.m. after a fire alarm was reported.
Crews found smoke and fire in one of the units.
Battalion Chief Jeff Schott said the sprinkler system in the condo was working properly and is believed to have kept the fire from spreading to other units.
The condo itself had moderate smoke, fire, and water damage according to Chief Schott.
Other condos in the building were also damaged by the water from the sprinkler system.
No one was injured in the incident.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
No one was injured in an Asheboro apartment fire Thursday evening.
According to Chief Danny Floyd with the Asheboro Fire Department, firefighters responded to the West Pointe Apartment Homes, located at 635 Oak Leaf Road, at approximately 5:40 p.m.
The fire, which was caused by items burned on a stove top, was out by the time firefighters arrived on scene.
There was minor fire damage to the kitchen, Floyd said, but the majority of the damage was caused by water from the apartment’s fire sprinklers.
The water damage also impacted two other apartment units.
Firefighters remained on scene for two hours for ventilation, salvage and investigation.
Sarah Israel, who lives in an apartment unit beside the one that caught fire, said she came outside of her apartment and noticed that her neighbor’s door was drenched with water.
“I live right beside her and I heard an alarm,” Israel said, “but that alarm sounded so distant that it didn’t alarm me to come outside and say ‘what is that?’ ”
It wasn’t until Israel wandered outside that she noticed the damp door and was able to tell that the alarm she was hearing was coming from the unit right beside her own.
“I think if I wouldn’t have come outside, it would have been a lot worse because I was the first one to hear.”
Firefighters were called out to Alex Box Stadium for a fire before 1 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported crews received the call about the fire at 12:40 a.m.
Officials said members of the LSU Police Department told responding firefighters there was a fire but the sprinkler system had doused the flames.
According to BRFD, police officers said a cardboard box had been put on top of a dryer and caught fire. The firefighters stayed on scene long enough to make sure the fire was out.
Fire officials added the power was turned off temporarily as a precaution. The laundry room and other nearby areas received water damage from the sprinkler system. Officials estimated the damage to be about $25,000.
No. 11 LSU defeated Indiana, 8-1, just a couple hours before the fire department responded to the fire.
There was no indication the fire would affect Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader between LSU and Indiana.
The sheriff’s office tells us there was a fire in a resident’s room at Bishop’s Court on E. St. Joseph St. in Allouez. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke in the hallways. The fire was in a closet in one of the apartments.
Five people were medically evaluated on the scene. Three were taken to a hospital for smoke inhlation: one staff member and two residents — including the resident of the apartment where the fire started. A battalion chief told us they should all be OK.
The battalion chief credited the sprinkler system in the facility for doing “a great job.”
The fire department says 60 residents are displaced temporarily while repairs are made to the fire suppression system. The fire department says some are being housed in another building at Bishop’s Court but some will have to be moved to other assisted-living facilities.
A report from the GBMFD says the cause of the fire was accidental but it doesn’t provide details. The estimated cost of damage to the property is $20,000.
