Escanaba, MI – Laundry room fire at apartment building contained by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

The Escanaba Public Safety Department says deputies responded to the report of a fire in the laundry room of Northwood’s Place at 2:39 a.m. Thursday morning.

Upon arrival, officers found the laundry room filled with smoke and the automated sprinkler system had been activated.

The sprinkler system was able to contain the fire to a dryer, which officers were then able to extinguish. The building sustained heavy smoke and water damage as a result of the incident.

Officers were on stand-by to assist with the evacuation of residents, which was not needed due to the sprinkler system containing the flames. No injuries were reported from the incident.

The Public Safety Department was assisted at the scene by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department and Rampart EMS.

Raleigh, NC – Third floor apartment fire minimized by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

A downtown Raleigh apartment building was evacuated after a fire started in a third floor unit on Thursday night.

Crews responded to the Devon 425 apartments on Boylan Ave. and Tucker Street. According to officials, the apartment’s sprinkler systems worked well at minimizing damage.

No injuries were reported, and officials said only two units were damaged–primarily by the water, not the fire.

Reno, NV – Fire sprinklers keep car fire from spreading to apartment units

A car fully engulfed in flames in apartment complex was extinguished Wednesday night, according to the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.

Fire crews were called to a parking structure in an apartment complex at 333 Ski Way on February 12. The car was below living units.

The building fire sprinklers helped keep the fire from extending to the units above, fire officials said.

Residents in the apartment complex were evacuated from the building but have now return back.

Crews remained on scene to completely overhaul the fire.

The fire is under investigation.

Janesville, WI – Sprinkler system extinguished closet fire at apartment

A major fire at a Janesville apartment building is avoided thanks to a working sprinkler system.

The Janesville Fire Department says firefighters were dispatched to a multi-family residence on the 200 block of North Franklin Street just before 9:30 Wednesday night.

Captain John McManus says a basket of clothing started on fire in a closet when the sprinklers kicked in and doused the flames.

McManus said the fire could have caused a lot of destruction had the sprinklers not worked. He estimated the building had about $1,000 in water damage from the sprinkler system.

About 10 to 12 people were displaced. The Red Cross helped the residents find overnight shelter.

The fire remains under investigation.

Brentwood Bay, BC, Canada – Space heater fire contained to single room thanks to fire sprinkler system at senior housing center

A long-term care home in Brentwood Bay was damaged by a fire Monday night.

The Central Sannich Fire Department received the call at 9:30 p.m. for a structure fire. Additional crews from North Saanich and Sidney were called in to assist.

The fire was contained to one room thanks to the sprinkler system but the water did cause damage to the rest of the care home.

“The immediate challenges with this fire were it’s a multi-unit building and with the occupants that are in there are not very mobile. So our priority was to make sure they were safe and out of harm’s way and to also stop the flow of water and clear the building of smoke,” said Chris Vrabel, Central Saanich Fire chief.

Brentwood House provides care for dementia patients and is temporarily closed while the damage is dealt with, displacing 17 patients.

Residents were taken to a nearby facility and family members were contacted. Island Health found temporary homes for those in need. 

The cause of the fire was determined to be a space heater.

There is no word to when the care home will re-open.

Ottawa, Ohio – Fire sprinklers help put out dryer fire at nursing center

Forty-eight residents living at Autumn Court in Ottawa were temporarily displaced last Saturday following a fire at the skilled nursing center.

Ottawa Fire Chief Dan Rieman said Ottawa Fire Department responded to the fire call at 10:56 a.m. Saturday morning. Also responding to the fire were the Glandorf Fire Department and Putnam County EMS.

Rieman said it was a drier fire in the laundry room. The fire caused a sprinkler to go off, leaking water down the hallway of the nursing center. This required the residents to have to be evacuated from the facility.

The residents were initially taken across the parking lot to Ottawa Highland Lanes facility with the assistance of the Autumn Court staff members, fire volunteers, and EMS volunteers. Also responding to the scene to assist was the Putnam County Office of Public Safety and Red Cross.

Arrangements were then made to transport the residents to Ottawa Elementary School, a designated Red Cross shelter. Assisting with transportation was a bus provided by Smooth Cruises LLC and ambulettes provided by the Putnam County Office of Public Safety.

Ottawa-Glandorf staff was at the school to assist with the care of the residents. Later in the day, residents were able to return to their homes around 6 p.m.

“I want to thank everyone who helped us,” said Leticia Hull, a human resource staff member of Autumn Court. She said many Putnam County people stepped up to help in many ways on Saturday.

The website for Autumn Court describes the facility that provides 24-hour care skilled nursing, long-term care, physical, occupational and providing 24-hour speech therapies for those with behavioral issues or mental illness. And, four-hour skilled nursing, long-term care, physical, occupational, and speech therapies for those with behavioral issues or mental illness.

Graham, NC – Fire sprinklers keep fire under control at gas plant

A fire on Thursday at Luxfer Gas Cylinders on Riverbend Road prompted two alarms that brought three fire departments to the scene.

The Graham Fire Department was called by a fire alarm and several 911 calls to Luxfer Gas Cylinders at 235 Riverbend Rd., Graham, just before 2 p.m., according to a department news release.

After getting more information, the department requested a second alarm, and the Sweponville and Mebane fire departments and Alamance County Fire Marshal’s Office also came to the scene.

Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the roof of the plant. The sprinkler system kept the fire contained until firefighters could enter the building and put the fire out.

Fire was contained to the machine where it started, but the plant suffered moderate smoke damage. Damage to the building and equipment was estimated at $250,000.

All the occupants had gotten out of the building. One employee was treated at the scene, but refused to be transported to the hospital.

The Graham Fire Department and Count Fire Marshal’s Office investigated and ruled it accidental.

Graham Police and the Haw River Fire Department also helped at the scene.

West Union, OH – Fire contained to one wall in women’s restroom thanks to fire sprinklers

In the morning hours of Thursday, Feb. 6, an alarm was sounded at the site of the old Prather’s IGA store and the future site Adams County Workforce & Development Center. A small fire was reported but no significant damage was done to the structure.

According to reports sent to The Defender, the fire was contained to just one wall in the women’s bathroom, and it was believed to have been caused by a shirt in the bathroom’s exhaust fan. Fortunately, the sprinkler head was an estimated foot from the exhaust fan and helped quickly extinguish the small fire. The wall that was damaged was scheduled for demolition in the future remodeling of the site to become the training center and there was no damage to the roof or trusses.

According to Holly Johnson, Director of the Adams County Economic Development office, the small fire “will not impede progress” in the work on the new Training Center.

Johnson continued, “We cannot thank Officer Jason Hanson of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Officer Brown of the West Union Police Department for their early detection of the alarm, plus all of the other law enforcement agencies and personnel that responded to the incident. West Union Life Squad personnel and the West Union Fire Department were there in full force, also assisted by the Manchester Fire Department.

LaGrange, GA – Bathroom apartment fire contained by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

LaGrange fire crews responded to a fire at an apartment complex shortly after noon Saturday.

The fire happened at Mallard Lake Apartments on Old Airport Road.

As firefighters were en route to the complex, Troup County 911 was told that a bathroom in an apartment unit was on fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire with a sprinkler system and quickly extinguished the fire with a minimal amount of water.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ooltewah, TN – Fire sprinkler system keeps fire contained to janitorial closet at nursing home; No injuries reported

The Life Care Center in Ooltewah escaped major fire damages when a fire suppression system at the facility activated around 5:40 Saturday evening.

The Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a kitchen fire at the nursing home near 5911 Snow Hill Road.

The Highway 58 VFD reported a small fire in a laundry bin. The fire sprinkler system kept the fire contained to the janitorial closet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Chattanooga Fire Department, no injuries were reported but HCEMS was on the scene.

The Chattanooga Fire Department says all residents were temporarily moved to another wing of the facility.
