Elizabethtown, NC – Sprinkler system contains structure fire

Crews extinguished a structure fire at Specialty Product Technologies in Elizabethtown on Sept. 1.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department (EFD) arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke coming from the building.

The fire was contained in the plating room, which was suppressed significantly due to the sprinkler system.

“This incident is a powerful reminder of just how critical sprinkler systems are in protecting lives, property, and the community. Their quick action, combined with our firefighters’ response, helped prevent major damage and ensured everyone’s safety,” EFD wrote on its Facebook page.

Nitro, WV – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Chevy dealership; No injuries reported

Cleanup was underway at Walker Chevrolet on Wednesday following Tuesday night’s fire that destroyed several cars and caused damage to the outside of the building.

The large fire caught the attention of many drivers passing by on Interstate 64 like Russell Heater.

“It looked huge,” Heater said. “That’s why I came by, because I assumed it actually did more than what it did. Because from what I saw coming down the interstate I’m like, ‘Oh wow.'”

Walker Chevrolet took to its social media, posting no one was in the building at the time and no one was injured. The dealership also said none of their customers cars were damaged and its service and body shop would be open under normal conditions.

Heater said he was amazed no more damage was done after seeing the roaring flames.

“I know there was a lot of commotion and a lot of lights like all the way down the main drag,” Heater said. “And then this morning I saw it on Facebook. It came up and I actually just drove by to see what all it did, because I assumed it did more than that actually.

“It was amazing that they got it put out before it did any more than that.”

City of Nitro spokesperson Joe Stevens said multiple crews responded to the scene, including units from as far away as Lincoln County. Stevens said much of the damage was contained to the outside of the building thanks to the sprinkler system.

“What the first arriving units found were a number of vehicles on fire in front and side of the dealership, and that’s where all the damage is right now,” Stevens said. “It’s exterior.”

The inside of the building has minimal water and smoke damage. There is still no indication as to what caused the fire and it is now being investigated by the West Virginia Office of the State Fire Marshal.

“It’s going to take a while to figure out exactly what happened, how it happened, where it started,” Stevens said. “That will all be done in an investigation.”

After arriving on scene at 11:10 a.m., firefighters discovered an active waterflow alarm going off inside the building, according to a press release.

Upon entering the building, crews were met with smoke, and the response was upgraded to a structure fire, prompting the dispatch of 6 additional units to the location.

The fire was located inside a manufacturing area and was extinguished by the sprinkler system.

Crews on scene worked to stop further water damage and remove the smoke from the building.

The building was vacant at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Flowery Branch, GA – Sprinkler system contains early morning fire at preschool; No injuries reported

A sprinkler system helped contain an early morning fire at Storybrook Academy in Flowery Branch, but the daycare remains closed while cleanup and repairs continue.

At around 1 a.m. Friday, Hall County Fire responded to an alarm at the small, single-story commercial building on Falcon Parkway, said HCFR spokesperson Kimberlie Ledsinger. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the structure and requested additional units.

According to Ledsinger, crews located the fire in one room, where an automatic sprinkler system had already activated and assisted in extinguishing the flames. The blaze was contained to that room, and crews ventilated the building to remove smoke.

Falcon Parkway was temporarily shut down while hose lines crossed the roadway. No injuries were reported.

The fire forced the private preschool to close its doors for several days so that cleanup could continue. In a letter to families, preschool owners Karmyla Story and Brooke Webb said their top priority is ensuring a safe, clean environment before reopening.

“Our team will be working diligently through the night and weekend to complete temporary repairs,” they said.

The school is replacing its HVAC unit to protect air quality and expects the installation to be complete on Monday. Once fire inspections are cleared following demolition and renovation work, the academy plans to reopen on Wednesday, August 27.

“Multiple teams are working around the clock, and we want to ensure our campus is fully restored and safe before welcoming families back,” the statement read.

The Hall County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Virginia Beach, VA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment complex; No injuries reported

Power was cut to 101 apartments Saturday evening after a fire and subsequent electrical failure triggered the sprinkler system at a Virginia Beach apartment complex.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department said crews were dispatched around 6:16 p.m. to the 5600 block of Infinity Lane. When firefighters arrived, they found light smoke coming from an electrical box outside the four-story building.

While crews worked to mitigate the issue, officials said a catastrophic failure occurred inside the electrical room, activating the sprinkler system. Dominion Energy immediately secured power to the affected units due to the dangerous combination of water and electricity.

The number of residents displaced remains unclear. Property management is working to help tenants find temporary housing if needed.

No injuries to residents, firefighters, or pets were reported, and there was no fire damage to the building.

The incident is under investigation.

Cincinnati, OH – Sprinkler system activated for fire on university campus; No injuries reported

Two buildings on the University of Cincinnati’s campus will be closed for at least another day after a fire that caused a power outage.

According to a UC spokesperson, a fire broke out in Rhodes Hall and was quickly under control as a result of the building’s fire suppression system.

No one was injured but the sprinkler system damaged the electric systems in Rhodes and Baldwin Halls.

The buildings will be closed for the next 24 to 48 hours as officials investigate the cause of the fire, conduct clean up and temporarily relocate research projects as necessary.

Officials said the electrical systems the Mantei Center, Rieveshl and Zimmer Halls were temporarily turned off for about an hour as a precaution, but those building are now fully operational.

The cause of the fire is still being determined.

Officials say they do not anticipate any impact on the start of classes next Monday.

Steelton, PA – Sprinkler system activated for early morning apartment fire; No injuries reported

An apartment fire broke out in Dauphin County early this morning.

Fire crews say the fire broke out at Steel Works Apartments on August 9 at around 4:30 a.m. in Steelton, Dauphin County.

“When we arrived on the scene, the smoke was coming from the third-floor apartment,” said Kyle Sultzaberger, Steelton’s battalion fire chief.

Crews investigating overnight fire in Adams County

George Drees, part of the Dauphin County fire investigation team, classified the fire as accidental.

“The origin of the fire was stove top unattended cooking,” Drees said.

While no one was hurt, there is some damage to the building which holds 42 apartments.

“There was seven people displaced, one child and six apartments affected,” Sultzaberger added.

Officials on scene say the situation could have been much worse if it wasn’t for the new construction, specifically the new sprinkler system.

“They’re quick acting sprinkler heads. So, when that sprinkler gets that right temperature and lets loose, it puts the water exactly across the room to put the fire out,” Drees said. “The heat sets off the sprinkler system fast. Works great.”

Other Dauphin County fire and emergency crews assisted in their response.

While some displaced residents are staying with family – the American Red Cross has assisted others with hotels while the scene gets cleaned up.
