Windsor, ON, Canada – Fire at residential building controlled thanks to fire sprinkler system

A fire at a multi-unit residential building downtown Windsor was quickly under control thanks to fire crews and the building’s sprinkler system.

Fire crews responded to the blaze at the Salvation Army on Church and Park Street West, according to AM800, smoke could be seen rising from the back of the building.

Attack efforts were underway by firefighters around 3:30 p.m. with crews reporting the flames were under control about 15 minutes later.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Service says the building’s sprinkler system “did a great job controlling fire spread.”

The fire was out by 4:40 p.m., crews were venting out the smoke and an invesitgator is attending to determine origin and damages.

Boone County, WV – Hospital sprinkler system contains fire; No injuries reported

A small fire broke out in Boone Memorial Hospital early Tuesday morning.

A press release from Boone Memorial Hospital says the fire started in an unoccupied room on the first floor.

The fire was quickly contained by the Hospital’s fire safety sprinkler protection system.

There were no injuries or evacuations involved in the fire. The cause is under investigation by the West Virginia Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Madison, Danville, and Van Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene.

Napa, CA – Residential fire sprinklers stop kitchen fire after family dog accidentially turned on stove burner; No injuries reported

When Napa Fire responded to a report of white smoke coming from a residence in central Napa Thursday morning, firefighters were greeted with two surprising sights.

First: An automatic sprinkler had already put out the kitchen fire.

Second: The fire had most likely started when one of the family’s German shepherds “counter-surfed,” accidentally turning on a stove burner underneath a bag of groceries, Capt. Steve Becker said.

This wasn’t an unprecedented cause, Becker said. “Dogs counter-surfing have caused more than one fire,” he said.

The fire, reported at 8:40 a.m., was located in a residence on the D Street Alley.

Because the home was equipped with automatic sprinklers, the kitchen sustained minor damage, Becker said. No one was injured, he said.

Roanoke, VA – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at Lids store in shopping mall; No injuries reported

Roanoke first responders were dispatched to Valley View Mall early Tuesday morning after an accidental fire broke out at Lids.

According to Roanoke Fire-EMS, crews responded to the mall at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, for a fire alarm.

When units arrived, they found heavy water flowing and smoke coming from Lids inside Valley View Mall.

After personnel investigated, the department says they discovered a fire had started in the bathroom’s vent fan before dropping burning material onto flammable materials that were stored in the bathroom.

Even though the sprinkler system was activated before firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames, fire officials say units worked to mitigate the damage from the water as much as possible until they turned the scene over to property maintenance.

There are no reports of injuries resulting from this fire, which Roanoke Fire-EMS says was determined to be accidental.

Bartlett, IL – Sprinkler system contains fire at warehouse; No injuries reported

More than 80 firefighters responded Tuesday night to a large fire at a 100,000-square-foot warehouse in Bartlett, authorities said.

The first crews arrived at the warehouse on the 1300 block of Brewster Creek Boulevard about 10:15 p.m. Workers told them that smoke and flames were coming from a pallet storage area.

The building’s sprinkler system contained the fire to a 50-square-foot area, but heavy smoke created visibility issues, according to a news release from the Bartlett Fire Protection District.

The fire was escalated to a second alarm, bringing additional firefighters and equipment, and authorities requested a specialized truck-mounted fan to help clear the smoke. The fire was declared under control at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which investigators said was accidental.

The Hanover Park, Streamwood, South Elgin, Elgin, Fox River Countryside, West Chicago, Carol Stream, Bloomingdale, Naperville, Elk Grove and St. Charles fire departments responded to the scene as part of mutual aid agreements, the news release said. The Bartlett Police Department, Bartlett Public Works Department and the Hanover Township Emergency Services also assisted.

Redmond, OR – Motel fire contained thanks to fire sprinklers

A fire that broke out early Thursday morning in a room of the Redmond Super 8 Motel was stopped from spreading by an automated sprinkler, but not before guests were evacuated, officials said. Investigators determined it was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

Redmond Fire and Rescue crews were called around 2:20 a.m. to a first-floor room at the three-story motel on Southwest 21st Place, near the Redmond Airport, Captain Ken Brown said.

Motel staff was assisting in the evacuation of guests, helped by fire and police, as fire alarms sounded. The automated fire sprinkler system activated and confined the fire to the one room, where initial reporters said the carpet and mattress were engulfed in flames, Brown said.

Crews made entry into the room, put out the fire, checked for any extension into other rooms and searched each floor and room for any other occupants, he said.

They ventilated the smoke and restored sprinkler and alarm systems, allowing guests to return to their rooms within two hours of the call, except for those near the affected room, who were moved elsewhere in the motel.

Damages were estimated at $3,000 to $5,000. Deputy Fire Marshal Clara Butler said the accidental cause of the fire was determined to be improper disposal of smoking materials.

Mutual-aid assistance was provided by the Bend and Black Butte Ranch fire agencies, along with Redmond police and Pacific Power.

Wausau, WI – Fire at Fleet Farm contained by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

No one was injured Saturday morning after a fire broke out at Fleet Farm in Wausau and the store is expected to reopen later in the day. 

The Wausau Fire Department received a call around 5:45 a.m. Saturday about a fire in the store at 1811 Badger Ave., Battalion Chief Jeremy Kopp said. Employees at the store noticed the fire, called 911 and evacuated the store. 

The store’s sprinkler system put out most of the fire before the fire department arrived, but firefighters did have to extinguish fire in the walls of the store, Kopp said. The fire was contained to a section of the store. After that, the department remained at the store to help with cleanup. 

Kopp said without the sprinkler system at the store, the damage from the fire “could have been a lot worse.” 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Kopp said, but it does not appear to be suspicious. 

The store is expected to reopen sometime Saturday, according to a post on the Wausau Fleet Farm Facebook page. Customers should check the Facebook page throughout the day for updates.

Grand Forks, ND – Boiler room fire put out by fire sprinkler systems

An early morning run for members of the Grand Forks Fire Department. Five engine companies and a ladder truck rolled around 3:30 a.m. to the Wood Products building on South 46th Street.

When crews arrived they discovered smoke in a boiler room. Hot embers in a dust hopper used for fueling the boiler activated the sprinkler system which extinguished the flames. Firefighters working the scene also knocked down some small embers. No structural damage was reported. Crews were on the scene for about two hours monitoring for hot spots. The cause is under investigation.

Greenville, SC – Fire sprinklers help extinguish fire at lumber warehouse

Firefighting crews responded to a scene at a Greenville lumber warehouse Friday evening, where crews say the building’s sprinkler system helped them extinguish the fire.

FOX Carolina was tipped off to the scene just before 9 p.m. along White Horse Court, at the Builders FirstSource warehouse there. Our crews confirmed fire engines and personnel were handling the scene, noting it appeared that Gantt District Fire Department was the lead agency.

The department said crews found a fire inside the warehouse, but the sprinkler system inside kept it small. Crews were clearing out by 10 p.m. after tackling the blaze.

Gantt District FD said crews from Belmont, Parker, and South Greenville also responded.

Lee’s Summit, MO – Hotel fire extinguished by sprinkler system

On Friday, January 1, 2021, at 2:46 p.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to reported structure fire at America’s Best Value Inn, 1020 SE Blue Parkway. The caller reported smoke in the first floor hallway, possibly coming from a meeting room. The hotel was being evacuated.

When the fire department arrived, there was nothing visible from the outside of the three-story hotel. Crews entered the building and found the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system had activated in the first floor meeting room and extinguished a fire involving a wall mounted heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Water flow was discontinued from the sprinkler head and the area was checked for fire spread to the wall and second floor. A search of the entire building found a few occupants still in the building that were removed. Crews assisted with smoke removal from the building. The incident was under control by 3:14 p.m.

The fire was contained to the area of the HVAC unit with significant smoke damage to the meeting room, and minor damage to the hallway. The cause of the fire was determined to be a faulty HVAC unit.

Portions of the hotel were able to be reoccupied.
