Sprinkler system aids firefighters at middle school fire (Hixson, TN)

Firefighters gained access inside the building to turn off the fire alarm and noticed signs of vandalism inside the main office area. At that time, they also heard noises of doors rattling in the building and reported possible suspects inside the building. Firefighters immediately exited the building for safety reasons. Moments later, visible signs of fire were spotted at the right corner of the building. The automatic sprinkler system activated and firefighters extinguished the fire immediately, containing it to the one room.

A fire at the University of Southern Maine was intentionally set in a residence hall trash can around 2:30 a.m. on Monday. A sprinkler head in the closet extinguished the fire. There was no fire or smoke damage beyond the closet. Students living in the hall were safety evacuated and the dorm was reopened to students at 5 a.m.

A fire in a clothes dryer at a senior living center north of Lynnwood on Wednesday caused minimal damage thanks to a sprinkler that kept flames in check until firefighters arrived, officials said. “A fire like this at a time of the morning when most residents are sleeping could have resulted in tragedy, but one sprinkler head was able to keep the fire contained to the clothes dryer,” District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said. “This is an excellent example of how sprinklers can react quickly to save lives and reduce property damage.”

A recycling bin at a downtown restaurant caught fire Wednesday morning, one of two fires overnight that firefighters are calling “suspicious.” The fire started in the cardboard bin and burned up onto a beam on the building. Firefighters said sprinklers activated, protecting the building.

A fire had started outside the front doors in a cigarette receptacle and spread up the wall and inside the building, according to the news release. Two sprinkler heads were activated and able to keep the fire in check until the fire department arrived and put the fire out.

Firefighters entered the apartment to find the fire had already been extinguished by a single sprinkler head. The initial cause of the fire was a pan of oil left unattended on the stove.  Due to the quickness of the alarm sounding and the efficiency of the sprinkler system, damage was kept to a minimum, and there were no injuries to report.

Firefighters arrived at the 50,000-square-foot building after the fire alarm went off at 3:57 a.m. to find the sprinkler system had kicked on, Acting Deputy Chief Capt. Paul Walsh said.  “It took us a few minutes to find it, but we found a car on fire in an inside dock. The sprinkler system pretty much handled it and we were able to quickly put it out.”

Firefighters say a sprinkler system saved an apartment complex from what could have been an overnight fire.
They arrived and found a plastic box and a cardboard box were left on a stove with a lit burner, said Kevin Stromberg, spokesman for the Vancouver Fire Department. The boxes caught fire and activated the sprinkler system. The residents were not home at the time.  The fire could have easily affected multiple families, especially early in the morning, he said.

Firefighters forced entry into the rear of the building and found a small fire burning inside a clothes dryer, as well as a sprinkler head flowing water above the dryer.  Firefighters quickly extinguished what remained of the fire burning inside the dryer. Automatic sprinkler systems like the one in use at Capital Lanes are designed to control or suppress a fire during its early stages, greatly reducing the loss of property and possibly life.
