Las Vegas, NV – Casino sprinkler systems helps keep fire in check; No injuries reported

After a woman crashed an R.V. through its front doors, a small fire was reported at the Cannery Casino in North Las Vegas Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 2 p.m. on Oct. 25. The Cannery Casino is located at 2121 East Craig Road, near Lossee Road.

North Las Vegas fire officials said about 50 firefighters responded from North Las Vegas, Las Vegas and Clark County responded to the scene. When crews arrived, they noticed a burning odor inside the property, along with some smoke. There was also a strong electrical burning smell.

The Cannery was evacuated and crews started looking for the cause of the fire. According to fire officials, several hundred people were evacuated. Crews narrowed down the location of the fire to an air handler near the restaurants.

An air handler is used to move heat or air conditioning throughout a building. As air handlers get older, they can collect dust and other build-up, becoming possible fire hazards.

As of 4:30 p.m., North Las Vegas fire officials said investigators were still determining if the air handler was the exact cause of the fire, though “the chances seemed pretty good” that it was a motor in the air handler.

Las Vegas, NV – Fire sprinklers put out fire started at hostel by ex-employee; No injuries reported

A man is in jail after he set fire to a hostel in downtown Las Vegas early Thursday morning and then tried to leave town on a bus, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Arson investigators say 32-year-old Idriss Cherifi worked at the Hostel Cat at 1236 S. Las Vegas Boulevard and had been fired earlier in the day for allegedly getting into an altercation with guests.

Firefighters responded to the incident shortly before 4 a.m.

Guests told firefighters a person set fire to the room while four people were sleeping in two bunk beds.

Crews say everyone had evacuated the building and nobody was hurt during the incident.

The fire caused $2,000 damage to personal items and mattresses, but the building was not damaged. Crews say the fire sprinkler system had put most of the fire out.

Cherifi was located by authorities at the Greyhound bus depot downtown and arrested for arson. He had just purchased a ticket and was attempting to leave town, authorities say.

Cherifi is being held at Clark County Detention Center on $20,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

At this time there is no cause determined and it is unknown when they will be able to reopen. Guevin said the damage was contained to the back of the house.

Reno, NV – Sprinkler system extinguishes basement boiler explosion that caused fire at University

A small explosion in a basement boiler at a University of Nevada, Reno dormitory triggered a much larger natural gas blast last week that left part of the building looking like an earthquake had struck but caused only minor injuries to eight people, officials said Tuesday.

The initial explosion occurred Friday at Argenta Hall while a contractor was working on the boiler that had developed mechanical problems and was shut down earlier in the week, state Fire Marshal Bart Chambers said.

Preliminary information showed the initial blast started a small fire that was extinguished by sprinkler systems.

Chambers said natural gas started leaking from a 3-inch-diameter feeder line to the boiler, but investigators have not yet determined how the gas ignited.

The boiler in question had no history of safety violations or active inspection issues, he said, noting it was last inspected 18 months ago in compliance with state codes mandating checks every two years.

Shannon Ellis, UNR vice president of student services, said students, faculty and staff members were “feeling incredibly grateful that there were no serious injuries and no lives were lost.”

Argenta will remain closed for at least a year, possibly two. Nye Hall, a neighboring dorm damaged by the explosion, will stay closed into the fall, Ellis said.

About 200 students have been displaced and school officials were trying to establish living arrangements for 1,300 students expected for the fall semester

Las Vegas, NV – Fire sprinklers saved building after suspected arson

A fire that burned through a local dentist office has been ruled it may have been caused by arson, according to Las Vegas fire Investigators.

Crews spent Thursday morning and most of the evening gutting ABLE Dental, located in the Dona Maria Plaza on North Tenaya Way.

Also, because the fire was so intense, the next door business of Africa Sanchez Attorney’s office was damaged by water.

Receptionist Jhonnathan Lopez told 13 Action News that several boxes were drenched, and the smell of smoke permeated the air, forcing them to close the office for at least a day.

“It’s the inconvenience, you know?” Lopez said. “We had a full calendar of appointments today, and we had to reschedule everyone.”

Tim Szymanski, with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, said the fire burned so hot and so fast that the flames activated several ceiling sprinklers when naturally occurring fires usually activate just two.

“This is a complex fire here,” Szymanski said.

He said sprinklers activate when temperatures reach between 155 and 165 degrees, and with so many activating at the same time it was immediately suspicious.

“It would be similar to someone maybe throwing a match into a barbecue,” Szymanski said. “You get that big poof.”

Szymanski also said that without the sprinkler system, a third of the complex likely would have burned to the ground.

Property owner Nezira Johnson swore by the sprinkler system that may have saved her a lot of work rebuilding.

“It saved our building,” Johnson said. “I think it would have burned down at least half.”

She estimated her repair bill would reach six figures, but was confident that her insurance would cover the majority of the cost.

Clark County Fire officials responded to a reported fire at the Palazzo Hotel Wednesday night around 6:46 p.m.

The fire was reported to be in an area under construction in what was referred to as a “Fan” room, according to Clark County Fire officials.

The Battalion Chief requested an additional engine, truck and rescue to be added to the response. While arriving at the property, the crew found smoke coming from a below grade area. The fire sprinkler system activated and appeared to extinguish the fire.

Once crews were able to access the area, firefighters found the fire had been contained to some trash that had accumulated.

There was no damage reported to the structure and there were no injuries reported.
