Chilliwack, BC, Canada – Fire sprinkler system quickly douses kitchen fire; No injuries reported

A small kitchen fire broke out in a third-floor unit of the RainCity Housing on Yale Road.

It was doused quickly by the building’s own automatic sprinklers putting the kibosh on any major damage – before fire crews even arrived.

Chilliwack Fire Department got the call at about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 28) about the fire in the 45000-block of Yale Rd, according to Assistant Chief Chris Wilson. Firefighters responded from Halls 1 and 4, and gained access to a third floor unit where they discovered a small fire in the kitchen area.

“The fire had been extinguished by the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system prior to the arrival of fire crews, which significantly limited fire damage to a small area around the kitchen cabinets,” assistant chief Wilson said.

“Without a working sprinkler system in place, this fire had the potential of causing extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the unit.”

Chilliwack Fire had nothing but praise for preventative measures like alarms and sprinkler systems.

“The presence of an automatic fire sprinkler system in conjunction with a working smoke alarm greatly reduces the chance of being injured or dying in a fire, and also significantly improves public and firefighter health and safety by reducing the chance of injury and exposure to harmful contaminants and carcinogens.”

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

Minot, ND – Fire sprinkler contains small hotel fire to one room

Minot Fire crews responded to a hotel in south Minot Friday.

A fire alarm went off on the second floor of the Comfort Inn and Suites South Broadway location just after 7 a.m. The Minot Fire Department found a small fire in an unoccupied room. 

Firefighters said the sprinkler in the room kept the fire contained.

The cause is under investigation.

Omaha, NE – Fire Sprinkler activated for fire in university dorm building; No injuries reported

The Omaha Fire Department, Omaha Police Department and Creighton University’s Department of Public Safety responded to an incident at a Kiewit Hall early this morning.

According to Cindy Workman, the university’s director of public relations, three small fires had been set at hand sanitizer stations. One of these fires triggered the fire suppression system in the building.

The students were safely evacuated to the student center and no one was injured.

The building was cleared for re-entry, and those students whose rooms were impacted by the sprinkler system were relocated.

Omaha Police and Public Safety are investigating the incident.

Camp Hill, PA – Fire sprinkler system assists in extinguishing fire at hotel; No injuries reported

The Radisson Hotel in Camp Hill caught on fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

An air conditioning unit in one of the rooms caught on fire and destroyed the entire room, while several of the nearby rooms sustained water damage from the sprinkler system.

According to the East Pennsboro fire chief there were no injuries.

McKinney, TX – Single fire sprinkler extinguishes apartment fire; No injuries reported

The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) responded to a report of a water flow alarm Friday morning at Times Square of Craig Ranch apartments located at 7951 Collin McKinney Pkwy. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke in the hallway.  

Upon investigation, it was determined that single fire sprinkler had extinguished the fire started by lit candles inside one apartment. Fire investigators say the resident had lit several candles and then fallen asleep. 

No one was injured.

“Fire sprinklers are on duty 24/7. They never sleep even when you do,” said McKinney Fire Marshal Mike Smith. “They are always there, ready to extinguish a fire before it can spread and cause a large amount of property damage.”  

According to the National Fire Protection Association, candles start an average of 21 fires a day across the country.

Riverside, CA – Sprinkler system controls restaurant fire; No injuries reported

Firefighters Sunday made quick work of a kitchen fire at a restaurant attached to a high-rise building in Riverside.

The blaze was reported at about 8:10 a.m. in the 3700 block of Main Street at a restaurant on the ground floor of the California Tower, according to the Riverside City Fire Department.

The fire sprinkler system was able to control the flames until firefighters arrived and doused the remaining fire, Battalion Chief Mike Allen said.

No injuries were reported.

Asheville, NC – Sprinkler system keeps building fire in check; No injuries reported

Asheville FD says a sprinkler system helped contain a fire that broke out Friday morning at a building along College Street.

AFD reported in a Facebook post on Saturday more details about the fire. The department said the fire was caused by people who had lit combustibles to keep warm, and was located in the floor between the 2nd and 3rd floor. The sprinkler system cut on and kept it in that area.

Crews did not report any injuries.

Napa, CA – Residential fire sprinklers stop kitchen fire after family dog accidentially turned on stove burner; No injuries reported

When Napa Fire responded to a report of white smoke coming from a residence in central Napa Thursday morning, firefighters were greeted with two surprising sights.

First: An automatic sprinkler had already put out the kitchen fire.

Second: The fire had most likely started when one of the family’s German shepherds “counter-surfed,” accidentally turning on a stove burner underneath a bag of groceries, Capt. Steve Becker said.

This wasn’t an unprecedented cause, Becker said. “Dogs counter-surfing have caused more than one fire,” he said.

The fire, reported at 8:40 a.m., was located in a residence on the D Street Alley.

Because the home was equipped with automatic sprinklers, the kitchen sustained minor damage, Becker said. No one was injured, he said.

Des Moines, IA – Laundromat dryer fire stopped by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

Des Moines fire crews are investigating the cause of a fire at a laundromat Tuesday morning.

It happened at the Coin Laundry in the 2300 block of East University Avenue at about 9 a.m.

Fire crews told KCCI the sprinkler system did its job in suppressing the fire. They believe it may have started in a dryer vent.

There were no injuries reported in the fire. Traffic in one westbound lane of East University Avenue was closed so crews could work at the scene.
