Fire sprinklers limit damage and save lives at refinery fire (Sidney, WA)

A fire broke out on the second floor of a refinery on Monday evening. Multiple sprinkler heads were activated by the fire, which kept the fire from spreading. The refinery sustained minimal damage, and all personnel were able to evacuate from the area safely. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

After a stove-top potpourri overheated in an apartment unit, a fire began and spread to the over-the-stove microwave. The fire sprinkler then activated and eliminated the flames prior to the fire crews arriving. No injuries were reported.

Fire at junior high school suppressed by sprinkler system (Holladay, UT)

A fire broke out in a junior high school the evening of March 6 when a curtain caught fire on a stage. Fire crews responded within minutes of the fire alarm going off at the school, and they found that the fire sprinkler by the stage had activated and put out the fire. 

“It worked perfectly,” Unified Fire Captain Fitzgerald Petersen said. “We’re very happy with the response, how quickly it was contained and put out.”

No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and the cause is under investigation.

Sprinklers suppress fire at senior living facility (Kitchener, ON)

A suspect was arrested in a string of fires over the last eight months at a seniors apartment. The latest fire, on Monday, March 3, began in a recycling bin. The fire sprinkler system activated, which eliminated the fire; no one was hurt from the incident.

Sprinklers douse apartment fire started by small child (Vancouver, WA)

An eight-year old child started a fire in the bedroom of an apartment on Monday evening while using a lighter. The unit’s fire sprinkler activated and put out the majority of the fire before fire crews arrived.

“Automatic fire sprinklers keep fires small,” Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said. “The (loss) potential was really great.”

Two campus buildings were evacuated after a small fire erupted in one of the buildings on February 3. The building’s fire sprinkler put out the fire, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Hotel room cooking fire extinguished by fire sprinkler system (Chesapeake, VA)

No injuries were reported after a fire damaged a hotel room at the Extended Stay America.  Chesapeake firefighters were called to the scene about 7:45 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the hotel, according to a news release.  The automatic fire sprinkler system inside the building was able to extinguish the room fire, the news release said. The cause of the fire appeared to be unattended cooking.

Nearly 30 people were displaced after a small fire set off water sprinklers at a apartment complex.  The fire started at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday in the kitchen area of one of the apartment units but was immediately contained and put out. The fire was minor, and no injuries were reported.  The fire’s investigation is closed, and it was ruled an accident.

Apartment cooking fire eliminated by sprinkler system (Springfield, MO)

A cooking fire erupted in an apartment unit around 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 20. The smoke alarm went off, alerting the residents, and the sprinkler activated, extinguishing the fire. 

 

Fire Chief David Hall said of the fire, “It’s one of those that would have been a serious fire had it not had a fire sprinkler in it – and a working smoke alarm.”

Christmas Eve fire at assisted living center snuffed out by sprinklers (Bloomington, IL)

A fire sprinkler system is being credited with extinguishing a Christmas Eve fire even before firefighters arrived.  Bloomington Fire Department Public Information Officer Brad McCollum said that at 7:43 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to the third floor of The Downtowner, a 36-unit, eight-story, assisted-living apartment building and found the apartment’s resident in a hallway that was filled with light smoke. “Upon entering the apartment, they found an overstuffed chair and end table that had sustained damage from a fire that had been completely extinguished by the sprinkler system,” .McCollum said the outcome could have been tragic for the resident if not for the effectiveness of the sprinkler system.
