Winnipeg, MB, Canada – Sprinkler system activated for arson fire at restaurant

A fire has forced downtown Winnipeg restaurant Commonwealth to temporarily close for repairs.

The restaurant, located at the corner of McDermot Avenue and Main Street, sustained damage after someone reportedly broke a window with bricks and started a fire inside, according to a Facebook post on Thursday by managing partner Nikola Maharajh.

The post said the building’s sprinkler system was triggered by the fire, causing additional damage.

Maharajh added that the restaurant may remain closed for “a few weeks, if not months.”

Fernandina Beach, FL – Sprinkler system activated for arson fire at restaurant

Fernandina Beach’s fire chief said it’s critical that a man seen on video setting a fire at Sliders Seaside Grill be identified and stopped.

Chief Jeremy Holmes said the lead investigators “believe the suspect may be responsible for setting fires in other areas around Fernandina Beach. It’s critical that he is caught before someone is seriously injured.”

“The business was closed at the time of the fire, which had multiple points of origin,” Holmes said. “Thankfully, firefighters and the building’s sprinkler system were able to contain it — the situation could have been much worse.”

It’s unclear how much damage was caused, but a phone call to the restaurant confirmed they were still open that afternoon.

Mitchell Aarons, a manager, told News4Jax that his bosses were there all night working on the aftermath. He said the man broke in through the back door and reached for a bottle of alcohol behind the counter before going back through the kitchen and started setting things on fire.

Police Chief Jeffrey Tambasco, whose department is handling the investigation in coordination with the Florida Fire Marshal’s Office, said they responded shortly after 1 a.m. on June 20 to the 1998 S. Fletcher Ave. tiki bar and restaurant. After firefighters extinguished the flames, it was determined through security video that the fire was arson.

A man described as middle-aged with a tattoo on the side of his calf and wearing shots, a T-shirt and baseball cap is seen using presumably a lighter to set an umbrella on fire in a patio area, glancing at it a couple of seconds and walking away. The Police Department said it is believed he lives in the area of First Avenue in Fernandina.

Scranton, PA – Fire at cafe held in check and extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A small fire in the basement of City Market & Cafe on Saturday morning caused a moderate to heavy smoke condition along with water damage, Acting Asst. Fire Chief Carl Megotz said.

Crews responded to the property at 300 Adams Ave. around 10 a.m. and found the fire was held in check and extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system, Megotz said. The business was able to remain open without disruption and no injuries were reported, he added.

Firefighters checked the building for extensions, performed overhaul and ventilated the basement for smoke, Megotz said.

Fresno, CA – Sprinkler system activated for kitchen fire at restaurant; No injuries reported

A morning kitchen fire prompted the temporary closure of a popular restaurant in Fresno, the Fresno Fire Department said.

Crews responded to a commercial fire on the 4400 block of West Ashlan Ave. on Thursday around 7:30 a.m.

Firefighters say a small kitchen fire at a popular restaurant, the Legendary Pho Kitchen, activated the sprinkler system, extinguishing the flames before they arrived on the scene. Although the fire was minor and no injuries were reported, the sprinkler activation caused damage throughout the business.

This incident, fire crews say, prompted the restaurant to close. The business will be closed until necessary repairs are made. An expected opening time has not been provided.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Port Washington, WI – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at hotel restaurant kitchen

Port Washington firefighters were dispatched to the Harborview Hotel on E. Grand Avenue on Sunday evening, Jan. 12.

What we know

The first call about the fire came in around 7:45 p.m. Sunday. A caller reported an activated fire alarm with smoke visible from the rear of the hotel.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the fire was already fully extinguished in the hotel’s kitchen. This is thanks to the sprinkler system in the building. Officials say the system prevented the fire from spreading beyond the kitchen and minimized damage to the property.

The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire. Hotel management said eight registered guests were temporarily evacuated, but able to continue staying at the facility.

What we don’t know

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Los Alamos, NM – Sprinkler system activated for kitchen fire at restaurant; No injuries reported

A fire broke out this morning in a kitchen shared by Los Alamos Cantina at 157 Central Park Square and the Pyramid Cafe at 155 Central Park Square. There were no injuries to firefighters on scene and the building was searched concurrent to fire control assignments and no occupants were found, the building was empty at the time.

Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief Wendy Servey explained that at approximately 8:17 a.m. today the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a report of a structure fire at 157 Central Park Square. A fire detection system had alerted dispatch and a sprinkler system activated prior to LAFD’s arrival, she said, adding that within 40 minutes crews had thoroughly ensured there was no fire extension into adjacent businesses or the attic/roof area and reported “loss stopped” as the situation was under control.

Deputy Chief Servey said that Engine Company crews from Station 6 and Station 1 quickly forced entry and contained the fire found in the kitchen area. Due to the quick and coordinated fire attack along with the sprinkler system the fire was quickly controlled with minor to moderate damage to the interior to include smoke damage throughout both businesses. Structural/foundations and roofs/attic spaces appear not to be compromised, she said. Units dispatched to the scene were Battalion 1, Engine 6, Medic 6, Engine 1, Truck 1, Medic 1 and Rescue 1.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by fire investigators from LAFD.

The Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce and the MainStreet programs are working with the owner and manager of these eateries to explore ways the community can support them during this difficult time. More information will be shared soon.

St. Cloud, MN – Sprinkler system activated for fire at restaurant

New York Gyro restaurant in St. Cloud is closed after a Sunday morning fire.

The incident occurred at about 7:15. St. Cloud Fire Department crews rushed to the strip mall at 3rd Street North and 33rd Avenue. Those who arrived first saw people still hastily evacuating the building. The fire suppression sprinkler system and a coordinated attack from personnel got the blaze under control.

They were also able to search the entire building for occupants and salvage some property. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

New York Gyro is uninhabitable, but all other businesses in the strip mall were allowed to return to normal operations.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Mark Wahlberg’s new restaurant; No injuries reported

Mark Wahlberg recently entered uncharted territory.

The 53-year-old actor’s restaurant suffered a large fire on its patio due to a flat, outdoor fire pit on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Flecha Cantina told People that a fire started after “a defective fire pit caught fire on the bottom of it.”

“The fire crew came and put it out right away,” they continued. “No damage at all in the interior restaurant. The only damage was the fire pit and the chair next to it. Thankfully, no one was injured.”

Fans could see the fire raging outside Flecha from footage shared on X by @LasVegasLocally.

The fire occurred the night before Wahlberg’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, weeks after the restaurant opened its doors on Sept. 14. However, the spokesperson shared that the event will continue as planned. The Las Vegas restaurant is “a fusion of traditional Mexican flavors with innovative twists,” according to a press release. The second location comes on the heels of Flecha opening in Huntington Beach, Calif., in June.

The Clark County Fire Department received a report of a fire on the restaurant’s patio around 5:30 p.m., according to a press release obtained by the outlet. Sprinklers were activated, and everyone had been evacuated by the time the fire crew arrived.

Luckily, the fire did not spread to the interior of the building, per the fire department, and appeared to be limited to a propane fire table.

Firefighters were able to decrease the flames enough so that the propane tanks that were fueling the table could be turned off.

The Flecha spokesperson confirmed that “the fire sprinkler company came back out and recharged the system and the restaurant was back open at 7 p.m.”

Wahlberg, who moved to Las Vegas with his wife, Rhea Durham, and their four children from California in 2022, had previously opened up about his decision to expand his restaurant empire.

He told Fox News Digital in June that he wanted people to “feel like they’re at home.”

“I want… them [to] have the most amazing experience they’ve ever had in a restaurant. I want them to feel like they’re at home, that they are doted on and spoiled,” Wahlberg added.

The “Arthur the King” star continued, “I’ve sent a lot of people in unannounced to really kind of see what the experience is like. I have an amazing staff, amazing team. And we are a family, we want to share our family experience, and that really translates. So come in, have an amazing experience with the food, the hospitality, drinks, just having fun. It’s an experience that you want to have over and over again.”

Rockford, IL – Sprinkler system activated for suspected arson fire at café; No injuries reported

Rockford Police are investigating an attempted arson at Wired Cafe. 

Rockford Fire Department responded to Wired Cafe after reports of a fire before 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

Tenants living above the cafe were awoken from their sleep by the sound of the fire alarm and quickly called 911 after noticing smoke coming from the back door of the establishment.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the activation of the sprinkler system had significantly mitigated the spread of the fire. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the remaining flames, limiting the damage to the cafe itself.

No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. Damage is estimated at $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Rockford Fire Department Capt. John J. Hall tells 13 WREX Rockford Police are investigating a break in at the business that occurred prior to the fire.

Rockford Police Department confirms this is an arson investigation.

Fond Du Lac, WI – Sprinkler system extinguishes kitchen fire at strip mall

A fire at a Fond du Lac strip mall was quickly extinguished, thanks to a sprinkler system, officials said Tuesday.

According to Fond du Lac Fire Rescue, crews were dispatched just before 11 a.m. Saturday for a commercial fire alarm and water flow alarm at 325 Winnebago Drive.

FDLFR said a single fire sprinkler head had been activated in the kitchen area of Fast Taco, located at 335 Winnebago Drive. The sprinkler put out the fire that had occurred on a two-burner cook top, resulting in minimal water and soot damage to Fast Taco and one adjacent business.

Officials say the fire was caused by unattended cooking. The fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems were restored. Business representatives and building owners are working to restore business operations.
