Alice, TX – Sprinkler system activated for fire at dry cleaners; No injuries reported

Alice firefighters and Alice police responded to a fire at a business near the intersection of San Diego and South Reynolds Tuesday night.

Firefighters responding to the fire alarm noticed smoke filling the downtown streets. They were able to located the fire inside the dry cleaning business.

Alice FIre Chief Patrick Thomas said the sprinkler system inside the business activated and kept the fire small until firefighters were able to access the business and extinguish the fire.

“The fire could’ve been worse for the business and for the downtown businesses in the area, but we’re thankful that the sprinkler system activated,” Thomas said. 

Firefighters have not found a cause to the fire, but do not believe it was intentional. 

“We’re thankful that in happened when the business was closed and no one was around, so no one got hurt,” Thomas said.

Frisco, TX – Fire at Frisco ISD building kept in check by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

The Frisco Fire Department is investigating after alarms alerted dispatchers to a fire at a Frisco ISD building Friday morning.  

After dispatchers were alerted at 9:59 a.m., the first unit of Frisco firefighters arrived at 10:04 a.m. at a FISD building on the 7200 block of Hickory Street. The initial response involved one engine, one ladder truck and one battalion chief, a press release stated, due to the response involving an alarm investigation. During the response, occupants found smoke in the building, the press release stated.  

“Additional units were requested as a structure fire was declared,” the department stated. “The fire was found in a closet, was kept small and was not allowed to grow as rapidly due to a sprinkler fire that activated when the fire began. A total of 12 units and 34 personnel responded.”

The department reported no civilian or firefighter injuries.

McKinney, TX – Fire at apartment complex extinguished by residential sprinkler system

The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) responded to the report of a water flow alarm at the Lakes of Eldorado apartments at 1400 Eldorado Pkwy. just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18. Neighbors told 911 dispatchers that water was coming from one of the apartments. 

MFD firefighters arrived to find that the flames had been contained and extinguished by the residential fire sprinkler system. 

Nobody was home at the time of the fire. Fire investigators are looking into the cause. 

Frisco, TX – Fire on 12th floor of apartment complex contained by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Fire investigators are investigating a fire that started in an apartment at the Twelve Cowboys Way Luxury Apartments. The fire was contained in the apartment due to the activation of the fire sprinkler system.

Dispatch was alerted by the alarm company of a “water flow” alarm at 12:13 p.m. Sunday. The first unit arrived four minutes later. Frisco Fire responded with one engine, one ladder truck, and one battalion chief on the initial assignment due to it being an alarm investigation.

During the investigation by the first arriving unit, smoke was found in the building.

Additional units were requested as a working fire was declared. The fire was found in an apartment on the 12th floor, was kept small, and was not allowed to grow as rapidly due to the fire sprinklers that had activated when the fire began. A total of 19 units and 43 personnel were used to help extinguish the fire.

The Frisco Fire Department announced 1:11 p.m. Sunday through social media that the fire was declared “out.”  Just after 2:30 p.m., the department announced that residents were being allowed back into the residences with restoration crews on scene.  

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Twelve Cowboys Way is a 17 story luxury high-rise building with garage and offices on floors one through five and residential apartments on floors six through 17.

Austin, TX – Arson Fire on 10th floor of Driskill Hotel extinguished by sprinkler system

There was a small fire on the 10th floor of the historic Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin Monday morning.

The Austin Fire Department says the hotel’s sprinkler system extinguished the fire. Only one room was impacted by the fire. Fire crews are now working to reduce any smoke or water damage.

The hotel has been evacuated and there are street closures along Brazos Street between Sixth and Seventh streets.

So far the cause of the fire is not yet known.

San Antonio, TX – Sprinkler system activated for fire at sandwich shop; No injuries reported

A Jersey Mike’s Subs sandwich shop on the West Side sustained some damage Thursday morning following a fire in the kitchen.

The San Antonio Fire Department said the call came in after 7 a.m. at the restaurant in the 8600 block of State Highway 151, not far from Ingram Road.

A fire started on the stove but the sprinkler system prevented the flames from spreading.

One employee was inside the business at the time and recorded the fire to show it to firefighters, a battalion chief at the scene said.

She was able to escape without injury.

Firefighters knocked down the flames and no neighboring businesses were affected.

The battalion chief said the damage is estimated to be a maximum of $10,000.

The damage from the flames and sprinkler system was minimal, he said.

McKinney, TX – Kitchen fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) responded to water flow alarm on Saturday, April 24 at the Times Square at Craig Ranch apartments located at 7551 Collin McKinney Pkwy. Neighbors reported heavy smoke coming from a single apartment. 

Firefighters arrived to find a fire in the kitchen that was extinguished by a single fire sprinkler head which kept damage from spreading into the rest of the apartment. No one was injured.

Fire investigators called to the scene determined the fire was started when a stovetop burner was turned on while a box was sitting on top of it.

According to the NFPA, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.

Fort Bend County, TX – (no media coverage) Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment complex

On 4/21/2021 at approximately 3:49am,
Investigators from the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office were dispatched to the scene of
an apartment fire with Community Fire Department. Upon arrival, investigators discovered that a
fire had occurred on the patio of a residential living unit. It was determined that the resident
smokes cigarettes in this area, and had done so before going to bed a few hours earlier. The fire
was controlled with one single head activation. There was minor heat damage to the adjacent
area. No other units were affected by this fire.

McKinney, TX – Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment complex

The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) responded to a report of a structure fire at the El Lago Apartments, 3400 Craig Dr., at 6:40 p.m., Monday, April 19.

The fire originated on the balcony and a single fire sprinkler head in the apartment’s living room area extinguished the fire and kept the flames from spreading into the apartment.

Fire investigators determined the fire was started by a child playing with a lighter. The child was referred to the MFD’s Youth Firesetter Program.

Here is information for teaching your child about fire safety:

  • Lead by example. You cannot expect your child to treat fire any differently than you do.
  • Explain why they cannot use fire.
  • Treat matches and lighters like tools. Give these items the same respect you would knives, kitchen appliances, hammers, etc.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of all children.
  • Reward children for making right decisions with matches and lighters.
  • Make clear the punishment for the improper use of matches and lighters.
  • Encourage your child’s school to promote fire safety in the classroom.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 7,000 fires annually are started by children playing. More than half of those fires are started with a lighter.

Stafford, TX – (no media coverage) Residential kitchen fire extinguished with help from sprinkler system

On 4/20/2021 at approximately 12:56 AM,
Investigators from the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office were dispatched to the scene of
an apartment fire with Stafford Fire Department. Upon arrival, investigators discovered that a
cooking fire had occurred in the kitchen of a residential living unit due to unattended cooking.
The fire was controlled with the single head activation and there was minor heat damage to the
adjacent area. No other units were affected by this fire.
