Toronto, ON, Canada – Fire at off-campus residence quickly contained by sprinkler system

Toronto Fire responded to a fire at Ryerson’s O’Keefe House residence building tonight.  Six units responded to the call, which was quickly contained due to the building’s sprinkler system, according to Toronto Fire Services.

Smoke was seen coming from the upper floor of the building shortly after 6 p.m. and started in a residence bedroom.  The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.  Ryerson’s smallest residence, O’Keefe House was built around 1875.  It currently houses 32 students.

Upon arrival to a Bridge Street West business in response to a report of a structure fire, Belleville fire crews forced entry and quickly found the minor blaze late Tuesday night.

Fire Prevention Officer Tim Vanhecke stated the building’s sprinkler system helped “significantly” in preventing the fire to spread.  He determined the fire was electrical in nature, but damage to the building has yet to be determined.

A fire at the yet-to-open Heart & Crown in Barrhaven on the evening of Dec. 5, was doused by the building’s sprinkler system and mainly extinguished by the time firefighters arrived, the Ottawa fire department said.  Oily rags that were not discarded properly self combusted, sparking the fire just after 7 p.m., according to the fire department.

One of the guests of a hotel caused a small electrical fire, which in turn alerted firefighters to respond to the scene at around 2 a.m. Fire sprinklers activated upon the flames, putting them out. The hundreds of hotel guests evacuated without injury, and the suspect has been charged with mischief.

At about 9 a.m. a fire began at an automobile manufacturing plant. An automobile caught fire during some welding work within the plant; the sprinkler system activated and this quick action combined with fire crews who arrived at the scene suppressed the fire.

There were no injuries during the incident.

An electronics retailer had a fire break out, and local firefighters were alerted at about 1:30 a.m. on Monday. The facility’s fire sprinklers suppressed the majority of the flames. Cambridge fire officials believe the fire was started by a faulty extension cord. There were no reported injuries.

A suspect was arrested in a string of fires over the last eight months at a seniors apartment. The latest fire, on Monday, March 3, began in a recycling bin. The fire sprinkler system activated, which eliminated the fire; no one was hurt from the incident.

A flaming object that was thrown down the garbage chute of an apartment on Thursday night at about 10 p.m. The sprinkler system activated and put out the fire, and police report that thanks to the fire sprinkler, there was no damage to the building. This is the fourth time that a fire has started for similar reasons in this apartment building.

Windsor firefighters were kept busy across the city after two unrelated fires broke out around the same time after 11pm, Monday evening …

In the second incident, firefighters were called to 810 Ouellette for reports of smoke in the building.
Firefighters investigated smoke in the building’s garbage chute and it appears as though the fire was successfully extinguished by a sprinkler.

Fire sprinklers prove worth at high school fire (Hawkesbury, ON)

Fire crews responded to a fire at 1:00 a.m. that began by the window of a high school classroom to find that the fire had activated the fire sprinkler which helped to suppress and contain the fire. No one was injured in the fire, and police suspect arson as the cause.
