St. Augustine, FL – Fire in ballroom at resort hotel quickly put out by sprinkler system

Multiple fire crews were called to the World Golf Village Renaissance Resort and Convention Center during an active evacuation Thursday night, fire officials said. Alarms went off inside the hotel at 8:15 p.m. and the sprinkler system promptly put out the fire, officials said. Crews said they had to perform smoke removal, salvage and overhaul. Madison, WI – Laundry fire at Radisson Hotel contained by sprinkler system

Guests staying at the Radisson Hotel at 517 Grand Canyon Drive were able to return to their rooms on Friday night after they were temporarily displaced by a small laundry room fire. The Madison Fire Department was called to the hotel around 11:50 p.m. to address smoke that was coming from a utility room on the first floor, according to spokeswoman Amanda Hornung.

When firefighters arrived, the carpet outside the first floor laundry room was soaked with water, said Hornung. Officials said that the crew found a moderate level of smoke, but no heat or active fire. Firefighters did report that one sprinkler head had been activated in the laundry room and that the fire was contained to a small area in the room.

Council Bluffs, IA – Attic sprinkler system controls hotel fire caused by lightning strike; No injuries

Investigators in Council Bluffs were sent to a hotel fire that was believed to be caused by lightning on Sunday morning. The fire happened at the Value Place hotel and added the building’s fire alarms were not working so guests had to tell each other to evacuate.

86 of the 113 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire, but no one was hurt. There was little damage to the hotel due to a working sprinkler in the attic.  However, the hotel will be closed for several weeks because of water and electrical damage.

Fayetteville, NC – Single sprinkler contains fire at Hilton Garden Inn

A fire in a laundry area at a Fayetteville hotel injured two people and shut down the hotel on Sunday evening, officials say. The incident happened at 6:38 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 4025 Sycamore Dairy Road in Fayetteville.

Upon arrival, fire crews found that the automatic sprinkler system had extinguished a fire that had started in the commercial dryer in the hotel’s the first floor laundry room, Fayetteville Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal Michael L. Martin said in a press release.

One sprinkler head activated as a result of the fire in the four-story building. The fire was contained to the laundry room. An employee and a hotel guest suffered smoke inhalation, Martin said. The guest was transported by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for evaluation.

The building sustained minor smoke and water damage. At the decision of the hotel management, the approximately 30 guests staying in the hotel were transferred to a nearby Embassy Suites for Sunday night, according to Martin.

The hotel is expected to re-open Monday. The cause of dryer fire is undetermined at this time, Martin said.

Peosta, IA – Hotel fire caused by electric heater/AC unit contained by sprinkler system

A late-afternoon fire today forced the temporary closure of a Peosta hotel. Centralia-Peosta firefighters were called to Quality Inn & Suites at about 4:30 p.m. today after a fire was reported. Scanner traffic indicated that the hotel had been evacuated and that smoke was spreading in the bottom floors.

Ray Stephan, assistant chief for the Centralia-Peosta Fire Department, said the fire began in a small entryway in a staircase leading to the first floor. “The sprinkler head was going off as we entered the building,” Stephan said. “We found it was a combination electric heater and air conditioning unit that had shorted out and burned.”

Nicole Minnihan, a sergeant with the Peosta Police Department, confirmed that guests were present at the time of the fire but said there were no injuries. “Right now, the accommodations (for the guests) are still being worked out,” Minnihan said as of about 5:30 p.m.

Stephan said at 6:10 p.m. that the hotel’s status for tonight was “in limbo.” He said hotel staff were pushing to keep the hotel open, but that the establishment could not reopen until sprinklers were back in service. He noted that a pipe was damaged during the fire.

Minnihan said the fire was contained to one space inside the hotel, but smoke spread beyond that area to damage other portions of the hotel. She said the fire had been extinguished by 5:15 p.m. In addition to Peosta police and firefighters, officials with the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.  “Everything is still under investigation at this point,” she said.

Richland, WA – Fire in storage room at hotel knocked down by sprinkler system

Firefighters have extinguished a fire reported just before noon Easter day at the Shilo Inn in Richland. They arrived to find guests being evacuated, said Richland Battalion Chief Ron Duncan.  A space heater in a second-floor maintenance room had malfunctioned and set fire to furniture and walls, he said.

Two fire sprinklers activated to control the fire before firefighters arrived and Richland firefighters quickly put it out, he said. The water from the sprinkler system damaged the reception area on the first floor below the maintenance room, but the business remains open, he said.

Far more damage could have been caused by the fire if the sprinklers had not activated, he said.

Several rooms were left with water damage. The fire was ruled to be accidental and guests and staff were allowed back in the building a short time later.

Oak Ridge, TN – Fire in air conditioning unit at Comfort Inn suppressed by sprinkler system

An Oak Ridge hotel that was shuttered after a fire prompted the evacuation of all guests early Saturday morning is expected to reopen either late Monday or early Tuesday, Oak Ridge Fire Marshal Travis Solomon said. The five-story, 112-room Comfort Inn at the corner of Rutgers and Illinois avenues was about 90 percent occupied, mostly with students participating in rowing practice and with off-road enthusiasts, when the fire was reported shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday.

The blaze was in an air-conditioning unit at one end of the fourth floor, Solomon said, and the fire department is still trying to determine what ignited the blaze. The hotel’s sprinkler system was activated by the blaze and helped suppress it, he said. “That shows that sprinkler systems, they not only save property, they save lives. It could have been a lot worse.”

The fourth-floor hallway was filled with thick black smoke, and firefighters had to assist people disoriented by it and help them down the stairwell, Solomon said. Three people were initially missing during the evacuation, and hotel staff “did a fantastic job determining who was missing and needed to be found.”

All were located. One person was evaluated for possible smoke inhalation but didn’t require medical attention. Solomon said hotel personnel found other hotels for the guests. Thirteen firefighters and seven firetrucks responded. The fire department is inspecting the hotel’s fire alarm and sprinkler system, Solomon said.
