Knoxville, TN – Sprinkler system helps extinguish fire at gas station; No injuries reported

Officials are investigating after crews responded to a fire at a gas station early Saturday morning.

Rural Metro crews said they arrived on the scene of a reported structure fire on the 2000 block of East Governor Highway and found the sprinkler system activated and flowing water.

Crews were already working a house fire in East Knoxville, so assistance was requested from the City of Knoxville and Seymour Volunteer Fire Department, according to reports.

Officials said crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire with the help of the sprinkler system.

The Marathon gas station was not open at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Huber Heights, OH – Unattended cooking fire contained to kitchen by fire sprinklers

A woman was rescued from an apartment fire Monday on Cloud Park Drive, according to District Fire Chief David Wright.

Crews responded around 4 p.m. to the 4100 block on a water flow alarm.

“When crews arrived, what they found was that they do have a water flow alarm, but the sprinkler system had activated in one of the apartments and we actually had a fire,” Wright said.

The occupant inside had fallen asleep and left food cooking on the stove.

Wright said the fire made some “good headway,” but the woman was rescued safely and only suffered some smoke inhalation.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, causing $5 to 6,000 in damage, and there is a significant amount of water on the first floor apartment due to the sprinkler.“Unattended cooking is one of the major reasons we have fires, so if you’re gonna put something on make sure you’re there to watch it at all times,” said Wright.

West Plains, MO – Fire at healthcare facility put out by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

No injuries were reported Wednesday after a small fire at NHC Healthcare in West Plains.

A report from the West Plains Fire Department says firefighters arrived just before 3 pm and found smoke in one of the rooms. An employee told responders that she was by the heater when she heard a popping sound and smelled a burning plastic scent. After unplugging the unit, the employee remained in the room for over a minute and didn’t notice any smoke or fire from the unit.

The building sprinkler system put out the fire.

The employee then made her way down the hall when a resident call light came on and the resident was yelling fire, according to the report.

No injuries were reported.

Chattanooga, TN – Apartment sprinkler system extinguishes stove fire

Chattanooga firefighters were called to an apartment fire off East Brainerd Road on Tuesday.

It happened shortly after 5:00 p.m. at Reserve at Creekside in the 1300 block Reserve Way.

CFD spokesperson Lindsey Rogers says visible flames were initially reported but were put out by the sprinkler system by the time crews arrived.

Rogers says resident said she had put a pot with oil on her stove and fell asleep.

The resident and her pets were able to escape without being hurt.

Rogers says maintenance technician who went to check on the situation at the apartment suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Rogers says the damage to the apartment was minor.

Rockland, MA – Sprinkler system keeps fire from spreading after women drives through front of pizza shop

A Massachusetts woman has been charged with operating under the influence after she police say crashed her car through the facade of a pizza shop in Rockland late Sunday.

The car ended up completely inside Mike’s Pizza at 315 Union St. after the crash, which happened around 11:50 p.m. The vehicle was on fire before firefighters doused the flames, authorities said.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Rockland resident Lauren Hutcheon, was out of the vehicle by the time officers arrived. She received aid before being taken to a local hospital, police said.

Neighbors Jason Webb and his fiancee said they heard the crash and came running to help.

“I’m looking out my window and saw flames before I even got her out of the car,” Webb said. “It was instant flames.”

Before crews even arrived, the restaurant’s sprinkler system went off and helped keep the flames from spreading.

“She actually opened the driver side door herself, threw herself on the ground and screamed, ‘help me, help me,’ as we were running up there,” Webb said.

Hutcheon was charged with speeding, failure to stop, negligent operation and driving under the influence, among other charges.

Firefighters arrived at the pizza shop shortly after midnight and successfully extinguished the flames, searched the building and temporarily evacuated the apartments above the shop, according to the Rockland Fire Department.

Ron Lopes, the owner of the pizza shop, had to close Monday due to the damage. He said he’s just glad nobody was inside the restaurant when the crash happened.

“Glad nobody was hurt,” Lopes said. “It’s mostly just a mess.”

Lopes said he hopes to have the doors back open before Halloween.

Hutcheon is expected to appear in court sometime in the next few weeks.

“Luckily she wasn’t hurt more seriously. Three feet to the right she would have hit a steel beam,” Lopes said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Lompoc, CA – Fire held in check thanks to sprinkler system after break in at dentist office

Lompoc Fire crews responded to a fire at a local business Monday morning.

At around 6:11 a.m., Lompoc Fire crews responded to a report of smoke coming from a commercial strip mall at 1133 North H Street. 

Fire units arrived on scene to find smoke coming from within the building along with the fire sprinkler system active. 

Fire officials located the fire in the office area of a dental office. 

The fire was held in check by the sprinkler system. 

The fire sprinkler system was shut down and the fire overhauled. 

The business sustained extensive damage from the fire along with water damage from the sprinkler system. 

Upon arrival, fire personnel noticed that the property had been broken into. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Officials say they are currently classifying this incident as arson.

Winter Park, CO – Kitchen ductwork fire contained by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

A fire in the kitchen ductwork at Casa Mexico caused the evacuation of the third floor of the Cooper Creek shopping center in Winter Park on Saturday.

The East Grand Fire District responded to reports of a fire on the roof around 11:40 p.m. Saturday and found smoke inside and outside the restaurant.

The smoke was coming from a small fire in the kitchen ductwork, and crews extinguished the blaze. The exhaust fan on the roof was damaged, but no cooking equipment was harmed by the flames.

However, the restaurant and the former location of Smokin’ Moe’s below it both suffered some water damage when the hood system discharged fire retardant and the sprinkler system came on.

East Grand Fire Chief Todd Holzwarth said the system worked as it was designed to and contained the fire. Crews had the sprinkler system and alarm back in service, as well as all flames out, by 1:10 a.m.

Firefighters suspect grease built up in the ductwork contributed to the fire, but they are not sure what ignited it. The restaurant closes at 10 p.m.

Owner Esteban Rocha said the restaurant would remain closed for repairs and wasn’t yet sure how long that would take. He said he is just glad no one was hurt.

Staff living on the third floor of the building were evacuated, but there were no injuries related to the fire.

San Luis Obispo, CA – Fire sprinklers contain fire at PetSmart to one room; No injuries reported

Firefighters responded to a fire at PetSmart off Froom Ranch Way in San Luis Obispo just after 5:10 a.m. Sunday.

Fire officials say an employee of PetSmart called the department after getting to work and seeing flames. No other occupants were inside the building at the time of the fire.

The blaze was contained to one room, but the building was filled with smoke, and water from the sprinkler system.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire within 10 minutes without injuries.

Officials with San Luis Obispo City Fire say they were no pet casualties. However, some of the store’s product was damaged.

Firefighters were able to ventilate the building, but there will be significant clean up.

PetSmart employees say they’re hoping to have the store open by 5 p.m. Sunday.

Officials say this could have been an electrical fire, but the fire marshal is still investigating.

Kearney, NE – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at court house; No injuries reported

Crews responded to an early morning fire in Kearney.

According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, correction officers called the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department after seeing smoke in an office around 2:30 a.m.

When fire crews arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said the small fire had been extinguished by the automatic sprinkler system.

Water from this system caused damage to the office’s furniture and carpet.

While crews are investigating the cause of fire, the Sheriff’s Office said they do not believe the flames were criminal.

The Sheriff’s Office said the jail on the property was not damaged but crews remained on scene to continue check air quality.

No injuries were reported.

Walnut Ridge, AR – Fire at nursing home put out by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

Emergency crews are now at the scene of a fire at Walnut Ridge Nursing and Rehab, according to a post on the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.

The post noted that Fire Chief Frank Owens said the fire was under control but that the building received a considerable amount of smoke.

“Ambulances are being staged but no injuries are reported at this time,” the post noted.

Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp said authorities got a call around 8:10 p.m. Friday from an employee at the nursing home about a dryer on fire.

Snapp said the sprinkler system was activated and put out the fire, which was contained to the laundry room.

No evacuation was needed and crews are working to clean up the area now, Snapp said.

Officials also said Walnut Ridge police is at the scene and that officials are asking people to avoid the area, if at all possible.
