Responders say that due to the sprinkler system activation, there was little damage and the fire was contained to a small corner of the kitchen. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but ruled to be accidental.
Crews estimate roughly $15,000 in damage.
The small fire was found in the second floor kitchen at White Star Ale House, but officials said it was being held in check by the sprinkler system. No one was at the restaurant when the fire occurred.
In a release, officials said a bag of rags ignited due to animal fat from the grease and heat from being laundered earlier in the night by staff.
Officials said the building suffered minor damage.
Firefighters encouraged residents and businesses to spread out laundered clothing or towels after removing from the dryer to allow them to cool.
“We believe something that was around the ornaments was combustible. We haven’t found the heat source that caused those ornaments to catch on fire,” Symns said.
Firefighters say the sprinklers and alarm went off in the building soon after the fire happened. The owners of the bakery were inside, and the fire was put out quickly.
The source of the fire is what they are currently investigating, and said they do not believe the cause was electrical.
“There is not outlets around the stuff that was in there. There may be something battery-powered. We don’t know that is what we are trying to figure out,” Symns said.
The Woolworth building is where Rock City Cake Company is located.
Rock City Cake Company shared some information on social media about their status. The bakery said they will be closed for at least a week.
Firefighters said the damage to the building was minimal but there is water damage from the sprinklers going off. In order for the bakery to reopen, Rock City Cake Company must get the green light following an investigation and inspection.
In the meantime, the bakery owners have shared that they will be filling pre-orders out of a commercial kitchen nearby and they shared that they will continue to participate in upcoming holiday events.
Sakura Japanese restaurant in Silver Spring Township is temporarily closed following a small fire.
A sign posted on the restaurant’s front door at 6499 Carlisle Pike notifies diners of the closure. The owners could not be reached for comment.
Silver Spring Community Fire Company Chief Benjamin McDonald said the fire broke out early in the morning of Nov. 5. Crews didn’t have to rush to the scene, though, because the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire, he said.
The problem was that the alarm system was not set up to notify the 911 center, and the sprinklers kept going over night, causing a lot of water damage to the business. An employee noticed it when they came in the next morning.
McDonald said the fire was likely caused by a hot pan being placed on a shelf.
While there is a lot of water damage, it is repairable, he said. He estimated it’s $50,000 worth of damage, but said that was just a rough figure.
The chief said sprinkler systems definitely work and prevented this fire from spreading through the restaurant and into neighboring businesses in the plaza. But there is a lesson to be learned.
“Make sure your alarm system calls the proper authorities,” he said. “In this case, it sounded like it tried to call the contact numbers for business, but never called the 911 center to alert the fire department of issue.”
Sakura opened in 2011 and specializes in sushi, hibachi and teriyaki.

Firefighters knocked down a fire at a Paso Robles restaurant on Thursday.
At around 6:52 p.m., Paso Robles Fire received reports of a commercial structure fire on the 800 block of 11th Street in Paso Robles.
Firefighters arrived within minutes and found no evidence of a fire on the outside of the location, which was identified as Taste Restaurant.
Firefighters entered the restaurant and found a small propane torch and cylinder that were burning under a rack in the kitchen.
The cylinder fire spread and ignited flammable items on the shelf above.
The sprinkler system went off before firefighters arrived and prevented the fire from spreading.
Fire officials say the cause of the fire was found to be a faulty connection between the propane cylinder and the torch head. When the fire ignited, the cylinder was dropped and accidentally kicked under the storage rock in the kitchen causing the sprinkler to activate.
The restaurant was evacuated and firefighters spend the next hour repairing the sprinkler system and assisting with water damage.
No one was injured during this incident.
Officials said Firefighters arrived around 7 a.m. and reported the smell of smoke and sprinkler activation near Observation Point North.
Firefighters said after searching for the source they forced entry into the Marlin Grill where smoke and an active fire were located in the kitchen.
The fire was extinguished quickly.
Officials say the fire’s damage was contained to the commercial kitchen area but there was some water damage to the restaurant from the sprinkler system.
The SWFD Fire Marshal said after investigating the incident it was determined the fire was accidental in nature, likely related to improper storage of cooking supplies and materials.
No injuries were reported.
The Savannah Fire Department (SFD) responded to a kitchen fire at a local restaurant overnight.
SFD says the fire happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Stephenson.
Officials say a fire in the kitchen of Ole Times Country Buffet set off the fire alarm and the building’s sprinkler system.
Crews arrived to fully extinguish the fire and ventilate the building.
SFD says the business was closed and no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
WSAV is told the Chatham County Environmental Health inspected the restaurant Thursday. Ole Times Country Buffet is now back open for business.
The cause of the fire has not been released at this time.
The C&B Fire Department responded to the Halls Chophouse at Nexton after a call came in to Berkeley County Dispatch at approximately 4:40 a.m.
The C&B Fire Department said its first officers on the scene spotted smoke showing from the fire.
C&B Fire Chief Josh Woodall said the restaurant’s sprinkler system put out the small fire. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Owner Tommy Hall released a statement Thursday morning about the fire:
Early this morning while Halls Nexton was closed, fire crews responded to a small fire contained to the lounge on the first floor of our restaurant. Authorities will be looking into the cause over the next few days. We are thankful that no one was hurt and that there was minimal damage.
The Pine Ridge, Summerville and Dorchester County Fire Departments also responded.
Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 5 p.m. to 8227 Colerain Ave. over the weekend. Agencies arrived approximately two minutes later and found heavy smoke coming from the front door of the restaurant and flames were on the roof, according to a press release.
The restaurant had been evacuated of all employees and customers.
The fire began on the restaurant grill, officials said. The Colerain Fire Department was assisted by crews from North College Hill and Mount Healthy.
The building had extensive smoke damage and water damage from the activated sprinkler heads, according to the Colerain Fire Department.
No injuries were reported.
The entire hood system and suppression system will need to be replaced, the fire department said.
Damages are estimated at approximately $20,000, according to the Colerain Fire Department.
