Sioux city, IA – Sprinkler system quickly extinguished fire at apartment complex; No injuries reported

Sioux City Fire Rescue was called to the Joan L. and Norm Wait Senior Apartments located at 3500 Peters Ave, on Morningside University’s campus.

Crews were initially called to the scene for a reported fire alarm. Once on scene, they had a fire that was put out by the building’s sprinkler system. They then called for additional rigs.

Sioux City Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief, Frank Fulton, told KTIV that the cause was something next to a space heater that caught fire.

He also says the fire was put out quickly by the building’s sprinkler system.

Morningside University says no students, faculty, or staff were injured during the incident.

“The safety and well-being of our students are our highest priorities,” said Morningside University. All residents of the building were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure and have since been cleared to return to their rooms.”

University officials say one residential unit was affected.

“Due to the incident, one residential unit was affected. The students residing in this unit will be temporarily relocated to other on-campus housing University staff are working directly with these students to ensure they have the support and resources they need,” said Morningside University. We are grateful for the swift response of the local fire department and our campus safety team.”

With many people using space heaters this season, Sioux City Fire Rescue wants to remind Siouxlanders to always be cautious.

“Something for people to remember is, you want to keep at least a 3-foot distance around your space heaters,” said Assistant Fire Chief Fulton. “They do get pretty hot, obviously, that is what started the fire tonight.”

Petersburg, VA – Sprinkler system activated for air conditioning unit fire at hotel; No injuries reported

Fire crews responded to a hotel fire in Petersburg on Sunday afternoon after an air conditioning unit caught fire and spread to the building, according to authorities.

Multiple calls reported the air conditioning unit was fully engulfed in flames on the side of the three-story Best Inn at 555 East Wythe Street around 4 p.m.

Crews found heavy fire showing on the side of the building when they arrived. Firefighters began evacuating the building and conducting searches to make sure everyone had made it out safely.

The fire was marked under control within 12 minutes of dispatch, according to fire officials.

Fire crews shut down the building’s sprinkler system as part of their response.

Fire crews remained actively operating on the scene Sunday evening. Officials urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to work.

No injuries were reported.

Officials said the blaze displaced roughly 50 people.

Los Angeles, CA – Sprinkler system activated for fire at apartment complex; No injuries reported

A stove fire activated sprinklers at a Wilmington apartment complex Thursday, but the blaze was largely extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

The fire was reported at 11:05 a.m. at a two-story complex the 200 block of East E Street, according Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

Firefighters encountered light smoke on arrival, shut down the sprinklers and ensured the fire had not spread into the walls or ceiling, Lantz said.

No injuries were reported.

Crews were expected to remain on scene for water removal, Lantz said.

Winkler, MB, Canada – Sprinkler system activated for late night fire at business; No injuries reported

Winkler Fire Department crews responded to a fire at ICON Technologies Limited late last night after alarms were reported just after 11 pm. 

According to Fire Chief Richard Paetzold, WFD was called to the business, where night shift workers confirmed there was an active fire upon crews’ arrival. The building’s sprinkler system had already been activated, helping to contain the fire and extinguish much of it before firefighters entered.

Fire crews then laid approximately 400 feet of hose to put out the remaining fire. Once the situation was under control, water flow from the sprinkler system was shut off.

Chief Paetzold praised the sprinkler system, saying it “Saved the day,” and that without it, “This would have been a very different story.”

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate has not yet been determined.

Rosetown, SK, Canada – Fire at high school contained by sprinkler system

A fire at Rosetown Central High School Monday evening has led to the cancellation of classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Mike Fedyk, coordinator of communications and marketing for Sun West School Division.

According to the division, a small fire broke out in a second‑floor classroom at approximately 5 p.m. Students and staff in the building at the time evacuated safely after the fire alarm was triggered, following standard school fire protocols.

“The school’s sprinkler system activated and contained the fire to the classroom where it started,” said Fedyk.  While fire damage was limited, adjacent areas experienced smoke damage, and water damage occurred in spaces beside and below the affected room.

Due to the damage, the school will remain closed on Tuesday to allow for cleanup and assessment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and school officials said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

“All students and staff are safe, and we are grateful for the quick response of our emergency personnel,” Principal Craig Vanthyune said in the release sent to parents.

Parents with questions were advised to contact the Sun West School Division office.

Gastonia, NC – Fire at nursing home held in check by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

A Gastonia nursing home was evacuated after a fire started in a resident’s room, but nobody was injured, the Gastonia Fire Department said.

The fire was reported at Rosewood Rest Home at 8:12 a.m. Jan. 6, and firefighters arrived a little over three minutes later, Chief Phil Welch said.

The cause of the fire was a cigarette that had been discarded into some clothing, Welch said.

When firefighters arrived, they found that staff had evacuated some of the occupants’ rooms, but around 20 residents were still inside. Firefighters helped get them out.

The fire took about 10 minutes to get under control, as a sprinkler system had prevented it from spreading, Welch said.

Rosewood Rest Home, located on MLK Jr. Way, was built in 1925, according to Gaston County tax records.

Joliet, IL – Sprinkler system activated for fire at Amazon warehouse

Just before 3:30 Monday afternoon, the Joliet Fire Department responded to the Amazon Warehouse at 4300 Brandon Rd for a report of a structure fire.

Company 3 arrived to find a large commercial warehouse filled with smoke, and the sprinkler system was activated. As crews entered, the fire was located deep inside the warehouse and beyond reach of the initial attack lines. The crews relocated to the south end of the building to make an interior attack on the fire.

Fire crews were challenged with zero viability, a heavy fire load, and material falling from the storage racks. With the sprinkler system keeping the fire in check, crews were able to work around the storage racks and begin attacking the fire. The roof was opened over the fire to increase visibility. Roof crews noted fire above the sprinklers that the attack crews could not see from the floor.

Mabas 10 responded with a large space ventilation truck to assist with smoke removal, allowing the attack crews to visualize the fire area more clearly. After the main body of fire was extinguished, crews worked isle by isle to remove product and extinguish any remaining spot fires.

The initial crews remained on the scene for over 5 hours, extinguishing hot spots and checking for extension. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a shoulder injury. A crew of firefighters will remain on the scene overnight with the sprinkler system out of service to ensure there are no flare ups.

Fire crews from stations 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Georgetown, DE – Sprinkler system activated for balcony fire at apartment complex

Crews with the Georgetown Fire Company responded Monday afternoon to a fire alarm activation at an apartment complex on Light Street and found a small fire on a third-floor balcony.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 12:54 p.m. Jan. 5, to the 32000 block of Light Street in the Weston Willows community. The first responding units discovered a chair on fire on the balcony of a third-floor apartment, with the building’s sprinkler system activated, said Georgetown Fire Company.

Fire crews checked the area for if the fire spread and determined the flames did not reach inside the apartment.

The investigation is being handled by the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Greenacres, FL – Sprinkler system activated for fire at residential unit; No injuries reported

Fire rescue units responded to a fire in Greenacres on Sunday. Greenacres Fire Rescue said it, along with the assistance of the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to a report of a room-and-contents fire at 3400 South Jog Road.

When crews arrived, they located a fire confined to a single resident’s room. Fire rescue said the fire was quickly controlled and did not spread beyond that area. Fire rescue also credited the building’s sprinkler system, which activated as designed and assisted with the suppression of the fire.

As a precaution, fire rescue said residents in the affected wing of the building were temporarily relocated due water damage from the sprinkler activation and the shutdown of electrical power to the wing of the building.

Fire rescue said residents will remain relocated until remediation is complete and power is safely restored.

No injuries were reported in the incident and fire remains under investigation.

Bridgeport, CT – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at apartment complex; No injuries reported

Ten people are displaced after a fire broke out at the 400 block of Washington Avenue in Bridgeport.

At around 5:30 p.m., the Bridgeport Fire Department responded to a fire alarm.

Upon arrival, firefighters located heavy smoke conditions after the fire was extinguished in one unit by the sprinkler system.

Nine units were affected, displacing ten people.

There were no reported injuries.

The American Red Cross is working to help those who were displaced.
