Firefighters say the sprinkler system extinguished the fire, and damage was contained to the balcony of the 3rd floor apartment.
Firefighters stayed on scene until 6:30 a.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The damage was estimated at around $10,000.
The South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District responded at 8:27 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a structure fire at Marble Works, 1601 N. La Fox St., Assistant Fire Chief Mike Rothecker said in a news release Wednesday.
Firefighters were met by two employees outside the 15,000-square-foot building who said there was a large fire inside the manufacturing plant. The employees said there were some hazardous chemicals near the fire, the release said.
Firefighters entered, saw heavy smoke and requested additional help. Fire departments from Elgin, Bartlett, Fox River Fire, Pingree Grove and Elburn assisted at the scene. Departments from Hanover Park, Geneva, Hampshire and West Dundee filled in at the South Elgin fire stations.
The fire was in the warehouse area of the manufacturing plant building, Rothecker said. The building’s fire sprinkler system was activated by the fire and contained the flames until firefighters extinguished it in about 40 minutes.
Members of the South Elgin fire district’s hazardous materials team determined there were no hazardous chemicals involved in the fire, officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
People were evacuated from the building. Chief Dienst says, “Light smoke could be seen in the back of the business. Police officers made entry to locate the fire, evacuate animals and give the fire department a size up.”
When the fire department got there it was determined the fire was located in a bathroom and the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. The sprinkler system was shut down. Firefighters used squeegees to clean up the water on the floor by pushing it down a drain.
Faribault Police also did on scene investigation and it was decided to call in the State Fire Marshal’s Office because the fire was determined to be suspicious.
Chief Dienst noted the Discover School had a fire late Sunday night where the sprinkler system also did it’s job. That fire was reported 11:17 p.m. Sunday. When the fire department arrived alarms were sounding.
Fire crews located the fire on the 3rd floor and made a quick knock down of the fire with the help from the sprinkler system in the building. The majority of the fire was contained to the 3rd floor ceiling. A small fire started on the wood floor below the ceiling fire from burning materials falling from the ceiling. That fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system.
Cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical short in a wire that was covered with cellulose insulation in the 3rd floor ceiling.
Chief Dienst commented, “The building’s sprinkler system and alarm system operated correctly and alerted the fire department while the fire was still small. Firefighters made entry, located and extinguished the fire quickly. Without those systems this fire had the potential to destroy the building.”
Chief Dienst also commended the employees of PetsMart for, “Doing a good job of evacuating the customers so that no one was in danger.”
Officials said the fire was a small one, and has been extinguished.
It’s believed a piece of industrial equipment that may have overheated caused the fire, but the cause is still under investigation.
Officials said the sprinkler system in the building helped contain the fire.
No one was injured according to officials.
“It could be worse,” she said. “I’m so happy and grateful it wasn’t worse.”
About 30 firefighters saw smoke pouring from the business in the 2200 block of North Commerce Parkway in Weston when they arrived shortly before 3 a.m., said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane.
“Firefighters were able to quickly contain the small fire which was already mostly extinguished by the business’s fire sprinkler,” he said. “The direct cause is unknown but may be related to a piece of waxing equipment.”
Ruiz said all the equipment is usually unplugged at the end of the day, but she thinks one of the waxing pots was overlooked.
“I’m thinking someone forgot,” she said. “It was turned on because they didn’t unplug it.”
The fire alarm and fire suppression system activated, reducing fire damage to the building and adjacent businesses, Kane said.
“Without proper fire protection, this fire could have grown considerably and quickly devastated the strip mall,” he said.
There were no reported injuries and damage to the adjacent businesses was minor.
Ruiz and husband Carlos Arango were boarding up some glass doors and cleaning up the water inside the business before dawn. She expects to be reopen in a couple of days.
“I’m very optimistic and I know I can push to get it done,” she said.
Emergency crews responded to the fire at about 1:37 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to the fire department.
The sprinkler activation system helped to contain the fire to the kitchen duct system over the restaurant, and firefighters managed to get the situation under control in 55 minutes.
“Due to the size and the complexity of the structure, we had 53 people, and we had all 53 people at one point doing some type of work,” said Winston-Salem Fire Department Battalion Chief Aaron Noah. “From moving the hose around the facility, ventilating the structure, fire tac to put the fire out, and being up on the roof to monitor the roof.”
The cooking area was left heavily damaged, and crews ventilated the nearby smoke-filled halls in the mall.
Two cleaning workers were in the restaurant when it caught fire. The workers were not injured.
Officials are investigating, but the fire is not suspicious, Noah said.
The Madison Fire Department said crews were notified of a problem at 7710 S. Brookline Drive at 3:07 p.m. after an automatic fire sprinkler activated, sending an alarm to Dane County 911 Public Safety Communications Center.
The sprinkler kept the fire contained, which allowed on-site staff to deploy a fire extinguisher and put it out, the fire department said. Firefighters were directed to the location of the fire and found a heavily damaged dehumidifier.
The dehumidifier in use was an older model that had several recalls, fire officials said. A drainage tube attached to the collection tank allowed the dehumidifier to run without interruption.
The fire department said that although the fire produced a lot of smoke, damage was confined to the dehumidifier, and there were no injuries or displaced occupants because the automatic sprinkler caught the fire right away.
The fire department said crews have responded to a number of fires involving dehumidifiers that were recalled, were older models or were simply left to run constantly for indefinite periods of time.
“It is unsafe to allow your dehumidifier to run uninterrupted,” fire officials said. “Homeowners and occupants should use the proper collection tank which, when full, will prompt the dehumidifier to stop running until the tank can be emptied.”
Firefighters responded to a 10:45 p.m. report of fire alarms activated at the Ford Apartments, 228 S. Joplin Ave., and discovered a van parked in the basement garage with a fire in its engine compartment. Smoke from the fire had activated the building’s sprinkler system, which kept the fire from spreading prior to the arrival of firefighters, according to the firefighters.
The building’s fire alarm system alerted occupants to the danger, and the building was evacuated without any reported injuries. Fire crews ventilated the building and tested for carbon monoxide in the aftermath before allowing occupants back inside.
In Duluth, firefighters responded to an automatic alarm at the Goodwill Store at 700 Garfield Avenue on Friday afternoon. They found smoke coming from the rear of the building where pallets of assorted goods were on fire. Fire containment was assisted by an activated sprinkler head. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Police say a man broke into the CENTRAL Longmont Presbyterian Church on Kimbark Street at 5:40 a.m. on Sunday. Fire investigators say suspect used accelerant to start the fire. The fire caused more than $5,000 in damage, but the alleged perpetrator was caught on camera.
As the sun filtered through the trees along Kimbark Street Sunday, the sound of mallets tapping lightly on a table could heard in a peaceful rhythm.
“The weather is beautiful today,” Carol Duarte with the Northern Colorado Caledonia Pipe Band said.
The Northern Colorado Caledonia Pipe Band was holding an outdoor lesson, after police say a man set fire to the church where they hold practice.
“Any time anybody is disrespectful or vandalizes someone else’s property it’s a sad thing,” Duarte said.
In the surveillance video a man can be seen peering into the glass door, near the Recovery Café area of the church. Then he readjusts his scarf to cover his face and that’s when police say he broke in.
“Like all our faith communities, they do incredible work in our community all the time. So it breaks our heart when our churches get targeted,” Jeff Satur, Longmont Deputy Chief, said.
Police said the suspect poured an accelerant on the floor, that some said smelled like gasoline, and took off. Officers credit the sprinkler system and fire crews for their quick response.
The church, which was built in 1905, suffered extensive damage. The band members said they will continue to improvise and have confidence the church community will be resilient.
“It’s a very vibrant church with a lot of programs that a lot of people benefit from,” Duarte said.
