Peoria, IL – Accidental apartment cooking fire put out by sprinkler system; No injuries reported

Three apartment units are heavily damaged by water due to an accidental fire on Friday.

At approximately 6 p.m. firefighters responded to a structure fire at Woodsage Apartments located at 9012 N. Scrimshaw Dr. Once crews arrived on the scene, the fire was already put out due to the sprinkler system.

The fire started in apartment 303 caused by an occupant cooking on the stove. The fire extended to the microwave and cabinets.

Two other apartments below apartment 303 were also affected because of the sprinkler suppression system.

No injuries were reported.

Greenville, NC – Dryer fire at student apartment complex contained by fire sprinklers; No injuries reported

Authorities say a fire at a student living apartment complex began in a dryer.

Greenville Fire/ Rescue says the fire broke out at The Landing apartments just after 8 p.m. Monday night.

They say the sprinkler system helped reduce the amount of damage, but people in at least two apartment units are displaced.

No injuries were reported.

Pigeon Forge, TN – Sprinkler system saves $1.2 million cabin containing fire to single room

Fire sprinklers saved a $1.2 million luxury cabin from going up in smoke according to the Pigeon Forge Fire Department.

The PFFD was dispatched in response to a fire alarm around 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, indicating a water flow alarm in an unoccupied cabin at 4125 Sherwood Heights Way.  Calls from other nearby cabins indicated that smoke and flames were visible from the cabin’s first floor. 

Firefighters arrived to find a three-story, 6,400-square-foot rental cabin with a working fire with flames visible from the rear of the cabin. 

A sprinkler located outside a mechanical room contained the fire to a single room. Shortly thereafter, the fire was completely extinguished by firefighters.  

“The cabin, with an estimated worth of $1.2 million and the capacity to sleep 48 guests, incurred approximately $15,000 in damages,” PFFD Chief Tony Watson said. “We have no doubt that the sprinkler system prevented the loss of this cabin and minimized damages. This event further demonstrates the value of sprinkler systems in all properties.”

Port Angeles, WA – Fire sprinkler prevents fire from spreading at apartment complex; No injuries reported

A fire sprinkler system prevented a fire from spreading at a Port Angeles apartment complex Sunday morning.

The Port Angeles Fire Department sent five firefighters to 1003 S. C St. for a reported structure fire at about 11:51 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release.

When they arrived they found light smoke showing from unit 3 and all residents had evacuated.

“The sprinkler system had been activated in the bedroom of unit 3 and extinguished the fire,” Lt. Bryant Kroh said in a news release. “Not only did this minimize the damage to the building, it prevented any further danger to tenants on site.”

Firefighters immediately worked to ventilate the apartment and turned off the sprinkler system to minimize water damage. The apartment sustained smoke, fire and water damage.

No one was injured in the incident.

The fire was caused by bedroom furnishings being too close to a baseboard heater, according to the press release.

Providence, RI – Sprinkler system helps take down mattress fire in apartment building

Some residents are displaced after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Providence Saturday night.

The Providence Fire Department responded to Bissell Street around 10:15 p.m. for a report of a small mattress fire on the second floor.

Upon arrival, crews said the sprinkler system in the apartment helped to take down much of the fire.

Deputy Chief Mahoney said two units out of about twelve are inhabitable due to water damage.

One man was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Crews stayed on scene until about 12 a.m. investigating.

Evansville, IN – Sprinkler system contains apartment fire thought to be arson

Early this morning, a fire call came in to dispatch.

The caller said someone had been set a fire outside an apartment on the 5th floor of Grandview Towers.

The sprinkler system went off and helped contain the fire until vcrews could make it upstairs and put it out.

Then about 20 minutes later, other crews were called to the Crossings Apartments, just a few blocks away, for another fire.

It was darkened down quickly as police became involved in the investigation.

Investigators believe both fires were deliberately set by the same person, and they are developing clues.

Grandview Towers has been in the news this week for elevators that do not work, where wheel-chair bound tenants on the 10th floor have no way down.

It’s unclear whether the elevators were working at the time of the fire.

Ottawa, ON, Canada – Kitchen fire in empty apartment unit extinguished by fire sprinkler

The sprinkler system quickly doused a fire at the Minto Suite Hotel Friday morning after a night that kept firefighters busy with two east-end house fires including one that sent three people to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The fire department was called to 185 Lyon Street North at 8:15 a.m. as residents were brought to the building’s lobby. The smoke and water was limited to a unit under renovation and an adjacent unit. Fire crews were clearing the scene within the hour.

La Grange Park, IL – Malfunctioning furnace fire controlled by fire sprinklers at rehabilitation center; No injuries reported

No one was injured and no one had to be evacuated when a furnace malfunction started a fire Thursday morning at The Grove of La Grange Park rehabilitation center, fire officials reported.

An automatic fire alarm at the facility, 701 N. La Grange Road, sounded at 9:05 a.m. Nov. 21, Fire Chief Dean Maggos said.

A furnace in a sub-basement mechanical room malfunctioned, causing flames from the furnace burners to reach insulation below some ducts, Maggos said. A fire sprinkler located only a few feet away activated, controlled the fire and sounded an alarm. Water from the sprinkler limited the fire and heat damage to the immediate area.

Water damage was minimal, as the staff and firefighters kept the water in the mechanical room where it drained through floor drains, the Fire Department reported.
