Dwight Fire Chief Andy Gregor told KFGO News firefighters responded about 5:30 a.m. to the fire in the boiler building, the highest part of the factory. Sprinklers helped contain the fire inside. Firefighters used hoses to put out the fire on the building’s roof.
A statement from the cooperative said damage appears to be superficial and normal operations have resumed.
Richland County Sheriff Larry Leshovsky says there were two minor injuries to employees but no hospitalization was required.
Crews arrived on the scene of a large, two-story auto dealership with smoke coming out of multiple garage bay doors. Crews quickly located fire in and below a vehicle that was being serviced and up on a lift. The fire sprinkler system activated and kept the fire contained until it was able to be fully extinguished by firefighters. There were no civilian or fire fighter injuries reported.
Approximately 50 people were in the building when the fire occurred. The fire was discovered in the repair shop bay by the workers in that area.
Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental in nature and started in the service bay area. The fire was caused by the arcing of a battery-operated tool that had been doused in gasoline. The tool arced in the operator’s hands and caught fire. The operator dropped the burning tool and it landed in a pool of gasoline. The fire spread to the vehicle being worked on and surrounding combustibles.
No one was displaced because of the fire. Red Cross assistance was not needed. Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $51,254.
The Red Cross says it is helping 11 people after a fire in Westbrook Sunday.
Firefighters were called to the Larrabee Village housing complex on Liza Harmon Drive at about 1:15 Sunday and found a kitchen fire in a fourth-floor apartment. They said flames started on a stovetop and spread upward.
Firefighters said the automatic sprinkler system in the kitchen put the fire out before they arrived. Crews worked quickly to contain water damage.
No one was hurt, but there was some cleaning work to be done.
The exact cause of the fire was under investigation Monday morning.
Larrabee Village offers one-bedroom subsidized apartments with kitchenettes, primarily for those age 62 and older.
The fire about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart at 2897 Veterans Memorial Parkway created a lot of smoke but injured no one.
When firefighters arrived, they found that the conflagration was confined to a rack of clothes in the men’s department, said Mike Grzyb, the St. Charles deputy fire chief. The flames were quickly extinguished by a combination of the sprinkler system and firefighters, he said.
Surveillance footage from the inside of the store showed a child, a boy less than 10 years old, hiding inside the circular clothing rack shortly before it caught fire, St. Charles Police Lt. Tom Wilkison said Sunday.
The child left the store with his mother shortly after the fire began, Wilkison said. Police had not yet identified or located the child, he said.
The investigation will be referred to St. Charles County juvenile services once complete, Wilkison said.
The store sustained extensive smoke damage and moderate water damage from the sprinklers, Grzyb said. Firefighters removed skylights to help clear out the smoke.
It is Fire Prevention Week and this incident highlights the importance of fire sprinklers! On Sunday, Oct. 4, the McKinney Fire Department (MFD) responded to a fire alarm call at the Motel 6 located at 2125 W. White Avenue. Units arrived to find two fire sprinklers contained the fire to room 215. MFD evacuated the residents from the structure and power was shut off to the entire building.
Fire Investigators say a candle was left burning on the side of the bathtub. The fire caused significant damage to the bathroom area. There was water damage to multiple rooms.
35 people were displaced. Some were moved to other hotels and some accepted help from the Red Cross.

“We urge people not to use candles at all. In an emergency, have flashlights ready,” said Merit Ossian,
Public Information Officer and Education Coordinator. “Think about using flameless candles in your home. They look and smell like real candles without the fire danger!”
No one was injured in a fire at the AmericInn hotel in Hartford Thursday morning, authorities say.
Crews responded around 10 a.m. to the AmericInn at 1031 S. Diamond Circle for a structure fire, said Todd Lowe, the incident commander for the Hartford Fire Department. The Hartford Fire Department was assisted by eight other agencies, including Tea, Humboldt, Colton and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.
While a sprinkler system helped contain the fire, everyone was evacuated from the building by the time agencies responded.
The fire was contained to the third floor, which sustained fire and smoke damage.
The state fire marshal is responding to the incident and investigating the cause of the fire. Lowe did not release where the fire started.
Authorities do not have an estimate on the total amount of damage to the hotel yet.
‘The Missoula Fire Department was dispatched to an activated fire sprinkler system with smoke inside the Southgate Mall.
Arriving crews found heavy smoke just inside the East main entrance and approximately 4 ceiling mounted fire sprinklers activated just above the involved vehicle at the central clock court. Firefighters entered with a hose line and portable fire extinguishers, and quickly gained control of the fire however, the vehicle would re-ignite randomly. Crews soon discovered that the vehicle involved was electric and still plugged in to a floor outlet. Once de-energized the fire was completely extinguished.
Southgate Mall management and security assisted with accessing and shutting down the fire sprinkler system, MPD controlled access to the Mall.
MFD set up smoke fans and de-energized floor outlets. Once atmosphere was tenable Mall maintenance was allowed in to start clean up and assist with pushing the electric vehicle outside.’
Three engines and 12 firefighters responded to the incident, with no injuries reported.
Southgate Mall Manager Tim Winger told KGVO News on Sunday afternoon that a slight incident set off one of the sprinkler heads near Clock Court early in the morning causing minor damage.
Due to the incident and the cleanup that is currently underway, the Western Montana Car Club Expo was cancelled for the day.
Winger said regular mall operations will resume on Monday, September 28 with their normal operations from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
On September 17, 2020 at 11:09 am, the Farmers Branch Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire at 11601 Lago Vista West #1156. Quint 133 arrived on scene with nothing showing and began an investigation. No audibles or strobes were activating. A fire alarm technician approached the crew and advised the fire alarm system was being worked on, but a fire occurred in apartment #1156 with one sprinkler head activation. Upon arrival to the apartment, the door was closed. Resident was in the hallway. Upon entering the apartment, light smoke was observed and one head had activated in a bedroom. The fire had been extinguished. Sprinkler system and fire pump were turned off. Quint 133 requested an investigator. Investigation determined the fire started along a base board by a dresser where a laundry basket of clothes were stacked. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Estimated loss is $15,000.
Firefighters from Halls 1, 4 and 6 were called to the scene of a structure fire in the 43000-block of Progress Way on Tuesday, Sept. 22 shortly before 1 p.m.
Crews arrived to find a significant amount of smoke coming from the building. Firefighters entered the building, discovered the fire was located in the paint spray booth, and that it had been extinguished by the building’s fire sprinkler system.
There was minor fire, smoke and water damage and it is expected the business will be back in operation soon. The cause of the fire is accidental and is related to hot work processes in the paint spray booth.
All employees safely evacuated the building and there were no firefighter injuries.
The department received a call about smoke at The Avenues of Craig Ranch apartments on 8700 Stacy Road. When firefighters arrived, the flames had been extinguished by a single sprinkler on the balcony of one apartment, according to a department press release.
“Fire Investigators say it appears a vacuum was left plugged in on the balcony and shorted out,” the press release stated.
Nobody was home when the fire broke out, and nearby apartment residents were evacuated, the press release stated. There was limited damage, but no injuries.
To avoid electrical fires, the McKinney Fire Department in its press release recommended calling a qualified electrician or landlord if residents have frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers, a tingling feeling when touching an electrical appliance or if they have discolored or warm wall outlets. Residents should also call an electrician or landlord if they notice a burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance, flickering or dimming lights or sparks from an outlet.
