Oakley, CA – Sprinklers keep fire from spreading at senior apartment complex

An automatic indoor sprinkler system kept a fire at an apartment complex for seniors from spreading, and fire personnel were able to evacuate residents before anybody was seriously injured, a fire chief said.

Fire Chief Hugh Henderson of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District said fire crews were called to the blaze at 4:18 p.m. and found light smoke coming from a hallway in the complex. Automatic sprinklers kept the fire contained to one room within a unit.

Murfreesboro, TN – Sprinkler system activates during fire at senior living center

Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department’s Districts 4, 6, and 8 and Engines 1 and 7 responded to a fire call at Adams Place Independent Living located at 1925 Memorial Boulevard around 12:00 Monday afternoon.

Dispatch reported that there had been a small fire in a bathroom in a unit on the second floor and that the sprinkler system was activated. When units arrived on scene, the fire was out and maintenance had turned off the sprinkler system. No one was injured during the incident.

Greenville, MI – Fire at plastics compounding business quickly extinguished with help from sprinkler system

Firefighters from the Greenville Department of Public Safety responded at 5:20 p.m. Thursday to a structure fire at West Michigan Compounding, located at 1300 Moore St. in Greenville.

According to Greenville Department of Public Safety Sgt. Brian Blomstrom, during routine cleaning, a hot ember escaped into the ventilation system, starting a fire that was quickly extinguished due to a combination of the company’s sprinkler system and a quick response time from fire fighters. No one was injured.

New York City, NY – Sprinkler system helps control fire at American Museum of Natural History

The blaze started when maintenance workers were using a blow torch to repair an AC unit on the outside of the building’s first floor around 3:30 p.m.  One of the unit’s filters caught fire, sending clouds of thick, black smoke circulating into the hall of Northwest Coast Indians, the FDNY said.

Several artifacts at the American Museum of Natural History suffered minor damage when a fire on the outside of the building sent smoke circulating inside, activating the emergency sprinkler system, officials said.

Schiralli said three or four thousand people self evacuated from the Museum while firefighters went to work extinguishing the blaze.

The extent of the damage to the artifacts was not immediately clear but museum staff insisted the they would be open for business as usual on Saturday.

Minneapolis, MN – Sprinkler system activates to help contain high-rise apartment fire

A fire in a high-rise apartment building on the 300 block of Lowry Avenue North was reported just before 4 p.m. Monday.  The sprinkler system activated to help control the fire. Minneapolis Public Housing was called to the scene to help residents who will be displaced as a result of this fire and water from the sprinkler system.

St. Joseph, MO – Kitchen grease fire in university residence hall controlled by sprinkler system

A small grease fire in Scanlon Hall at Missouri Western State University caused an evacuation of all Scanlon residents on Tuesday, Nov. 18.  Jacob Teasley, second year resident assistant in Scanlon Hall, was involved with the event.

“There was a grease fire in the kitchen of the first floor guys’ wing,” Teasley said. “The students put water on it to put it out and it got worse.” Teasley believed there were two students directly involved in the fire.  He said that no one was hurt.

Mallory Murray, director of public relations and marketing, sent an email to all Western employees regarding the fire. “There was no structural damage, however, students were disrupted between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. and it may have impacted attendance in class for those that live in this hall,” Murray said in the email.  According to Teasley, the sprinkler was going off in the kitchen where the fire occurred only, not in the rest of the hall.

Pittsburgh, PA – Fire in high-rise residence hall at University of Pittsburgh extinguished by sprinkler system

University of Pittsburgh, Litchfield Tower A — The fire spread to a pillow and part of a chair, according to resident Jorge Garcia, but the sprinkler system put out the fire before it spread further.

“Fortunately, the sprinkler system was still working and put out the fire before any personnel arrived to extinguish it,” Pitt spokesman John Fedele said.  There was no “substantial damage” to anything in Tower A, Fedele said, aside from the carpet, desk and chair in room 818.

Garcia, a freshman neuroscience major, was in the room when the laptop caught fire. “I heard a spark, and then it was just flames,” Garcia said.

Riverhead, NY – Sprinkler activates to help control fire at Tanger Outlet Mall

A fire broke out at Tanger Outlets on Sunday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of a handful of stores at the crowded shopping mall.

Riverhead firefighters responded to the alarm at about 2:40 p.m. and quickly contained and stopped the fire in the back room of the Charlotte Russe store in Tanger 2.  The fire triggered the store’s sprinkler system.

The Riverhead fire marshal was called to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

Salisbury, MD – Townhouse fire contained to one room by residential sprinkler system

An electrical failure in an HVAC system is being blamed for a fire at a Salisbury townhouse Wednesday, the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office said.  Deputy state fire marshals responded to 1733 Woodbrooke Drive in Salisbury at about 12:50 p.m. for a fire contained to a living room by a residential fire sprinkler.

A fire sprinkler head quickly activated near the small blaze and contained the fire, while protecting the remainder of the home and contents.  The home will remain unoccupied temporarily while maintenance personnel make minor repairs and clean-up from the incident.  There were no injuries.

Gloucester, MA – Fire in freezer at seafood company extinguished by sprinkler system

A Gloucester firefighter sustained what the department termed a minor injury when crews responded to a fire within a freezer at the former Good Harbor seafood location within the Blackburn Industrial Park at around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

Chief Eric Smith said a piece of equipment fell on the firefighter’s hand and he was brought to Addison Gilbert Hospital for evaluation. The small blaze was contained within the freezer, Smith said, and a sprinkler discharged and extinguished the flame.

“The sprinkler kept it under control,” he said.  The crew was still on scene as of 5 p.m. Smith said firefighters were disassembling the freezer to make sure no flames remained inside.
