Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system keeps warehouse fire from spreading; Fire started on exterior roll-up door

An automatic fire sprinkler prevented a warehouse from becoming fully involved after a fire started outside the warehouse early Tuesday morning. Fire dispatchers received a call from a passer-by at 1:40 a.m. that flames were visible on the outside of a warehouse in the alley behind 1510 S. Main St. The alley runs between Wyoming and Utah avenues. When firefighters arrived there was fire on the outside of a large rollup door into the warehouse from the alley. The fire was beginning to burn into the warehouse.  When firefighters cut through the rollup door, they found that an automatic fire sprinkler was activated and was preventing the fire from entering the building.  Smoke did enter the building and firefighters were able to get it out quickly. The cause of the fire is under investigation. A damage estimate is not available.  There were no reported injuries.

Lowell, AR (No Media Coverage) – Two sprinkler heads extinguish fire in building products warehouse

***FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED – NO MEDIA COVERAGE*** The Lowell Fire Department responded to an automatic alarm at 310 Commercial Avenue on April 4, 2017 at 19:35. Upon arrival, nothing was showing from the exterior. Upon investigation, firefighters found water running out overhead door and then noticed smoke when entering the building. The fire was extinguished by two sprinkler heads and confined to the area of origin burning two bundles of wood products. Firefighters just had to extinguish smolder embers after finding the seat of the fire. This building was a 25,000 square foot warehouse of building products unoccupied by employees at the time of the fire.

Fort Worth, TX – No injuries as sprinkler system helps extinguish intentionally-set fire at Walmart distribution center

The Fort Worth Fire Department said a fire at the Walmart Distribution Center on Westport Parkway Friday morning appears to have been intentionally set and is under investigation.

The fire started around 11:10 a.m.The fire department said employees were evacuated as smoke was coming from the building and water was coming out of the sprinkler system.

Soon after firefighters arrived, they called for more units.The fire department said the fire started on a bottom shelf and spread to the second and third shelves.

The sprinklers put out most of the fire and there is now significant water damage to the merchandise.

The Walmart Distribution Center is an open floor plan 8,000 square foot facility.

There are four levels of shelves containing merchandise.

No one was hurt.

Orlando, FL – Fire at CVS warehouse contained with help from sprinkler system

A fire at the CVS Pharmacy warehouse in south Orange County caused evacuation of the building. But the company said the incident won’t have much impact on supplying the many drug stores in the region.

Orange County Fire Rescue responded to the large warehouse at 8201 Chancellor Drive, around 4:15 p.m. Sunday. Arriving units found smoke and a small fire in the building, in the industrial park about a mile west of the Florida Mall. It was difficult for firefighters to access the fire, and it required sawing a hole in the roof to reach the fire and extinguish it. The warehouse’s sprinkler system was activated by the fire. CVS said that likely contained the fire to that area. Fire units remained on scene into Sunday night to remove smoke from the building and check the 720,000 square foot facility to ensure that the fire is completely extinguished, and that there are no other hazards.

CVS spokesman Mike DeAngelis sent a statement to WESH 2 News, advising that the fire started in the rear corner of the building in a break room area. The warehouse will be closed Monday to examine the building’s inventory to see if any of it was damaged. He noted that all of Monday’s shipments to stores had already been loaded in the fleet of trucks, and were not affected by the fire. CVS plans to use its distribution centers in Vero Beach and Knoxville, and the company’s pharmaceutical suppliers to replenish stores in our area if needed.

No one was injured in the incident.

Jupiter, FL – Sprinkler system keeps fire under control after boat catches fire in dry storage facility

A vessel in dry storage caught fire Friday afternoon at the Loggerhead Marina. The first arriving crews found that a boat on the top rack was on fire, said Capt. Albert Borroto, spokesman for Fire Rescue. The sprinklers of the facility activated and helped to keep the fire under control.

The firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and protected two nearby boats for fire exposure. The three affected vessels were brought down from the storage area and investigator was called to the scene.

There were no injuries reported.

West Des Moines, IA – Officials credit sprinkler system with controlling moving company warehouse fire

Fire crews were called to a fire in an industrial area of West Des Moines just before noon Monday.  Fire broke out at 523 S 18th Street in West Des Moines at Mayflower Transit.  The building holds furniture held for later moving.   Fire officials said a sprinkler system inside the building likely saved the structure.  The cause of the fire is not known and a damage estimate was not yet available.

Weaverville, NC – Warehouse fire contained by quick response of sprinkler system; firefighters

Fire officials are trying to determine what caused a fire to break out at the Thermo Fisher warehouse near Weaverville.  Crews were dispatched to the scene around 1 p.m. Wednesday.  The chief credits the warehouse’s sprinkler system and fire crew’s quick response for the minimal damage to the building.  However, he said there is extensive damage to products that were inside. There were no reported injuries.

Assonet, MA – Sprinkler systems help keep fire at distribution center from spreading

A late afternoon tractor trailer fire at the Stop & Shop Distribution Center Sunday temporarily ceased operations, but no injuries were reported, officials said. At about 3:53 p.m., the Freetown Fire Department was notified of an automatic fire alarm activation at the Stop & Shop Distribution Center at 136 South Main St. in Assonet, said Lt. Brent L’Heureux, a spokesman for the Freetown Fire Department.  Upon arrival to the scene, Freetown Fire personnel found a refrigerated trailer on fire, and the blaze extended through the loading dock and into the warehouse. The building’s sprinkler system activated and prevented the fire from spreading further, L’Heureux said in a news release.  Only a few employees were in the building at the time of the fire due to the holiday and they quickly evacuated when the fire alarm went off. The fire was under control in an hour and firefighters remained on scene for several hours to remove smoke from the warehouse, L’Heureux said.

Oakland, CA – Warehouse fire at leather company stopped by sprinkler system

A fire at a leather company warehouse in East Oakland Friday morning was almost extinguished when firefighters arrived on the scene, thanks to the building’s sprinkler system, authorities said. Some wooden pallets and debris were the only items burned in the blaze, the cause of which is under investigation.  Battalion Fire Chief Demond Simmons credited the sprinkler system for preventing further damage.  “It pretty much stopped the fire and made sure it did not spread,” he said.

The fire was reported about 7:52 a.m. Friday at a warehouse in the 800 block of 81st Avenue that is a storage and distribution center for California Leather Creations, officials said. The building is on a large piece of property that used to be the site of Mothers Cookies.  When firefighters arrived they had to force entry through a large metal door.  The items that had caught fire were mainly smoldering thanks to the building sprinkler system that had activated.  Firefighters made sure there were no flareups and called the fire under control at 8:14 a.m.  There were no injuries.  Simmons said a damage figure has not been determined.

Canton, OH – Fire at industrial distribution business contained to area of origin by sprinkler system

Stacked cardboard boxes placed too close to radiant ceiling heaters caused a fire that did about $180,000 in damage to engine compartments in the warehouse area at Detroit Diesel on Monday, firefighters said. The smoke also impacted thousands of items stored there by Goodwill of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, rendering those items “too damaged to be sold in any of the stores,” said Robyn Steinmetz, vice president of marketing at Goodwill.

The damage left Goodwill pleading Tuesday for more donations from the public. No one was injured in the 12:09 p.m. blaze at 818 Mulberry Road SE, although firefighters were initially told that someone may have been trapped inside. Battalion Chief Jeff Magee said in a news release that everyone had made it safely out of the burning building.

“On arrival, units found a working structure fire at a large commercial building housing Detroit Diesel industrial supplies,” Magee said, noting that the large warehouse contains diesel engine components.

“The components were contained in cardboard boxes that had been stacked vertically and were too close to radiant ceiling heaters,” Magee said. “When the heaters activated due to the cold weather, they ignited the cardboard boxes. Two sprinkler heads activated and confined the fire to area of origin. Firefighters pulled a hoseline to extinguish the fire that could not be reached by the sprinklers.”

The structure wasn’t damaged, but about $180,000 in damage was done to the engine compartments, Magee said. The impact also hit Goodwill.

“Goodwill’s business model relies on donations from the community, which are sold in Goodwill stores, with the revenue helping to support local programs and services that help residents train for, find and keep good jobs,” Steinmetz said in a news release Tuesday.

The donated items that had been inside the warehouse would have been rotated throughout the stores in Stark, Tuscarawas, Carroll, Jefferson and Harrison counties in Ohio and Brooke and Hancock counties in West Virginia, she said.

“Stark County has always been supportive of Goodwill, and we are asking everyone to continue that tradition right now by making it a priority to drop off those donations you’ve been meaning to drop off, or using this time to clean out some closets, basements, or attics in time for the holidays,” said Doug Widrig, Goodwill’s vice president of retail operations. “It will feel good for you, and it will help Goodwill recover from this unfortunate event.”
