San Diego, CA – Arson fire at restaurant in Gaslamp District put out by sprinkler system

A 21-year-old Marine was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of starting a fire that resulted in $25,000 in damage a restaurant in the Gaslamp District, authorities said.  The blaze at Blue Point Coastal Cuisine at 565 Fifth Ave. near Market Street was reported around 1:45 a.m. and was quickly doused by the building’s sprinkler system, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.

Investigators determined that the fire was started in the back of the restaurant, which was closed at the time, by an allegedly intoxicated man who was not an employee of the eatery, Munoz said. The suspect came in through an open door, started vandalizing the restaurant and set a few fires in the back, Munoz alleged.  Police identified the suspect as Austin Kokin, a Marine Corps corporal. He was arrested near the eatery and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of burglary, arson, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and vandalism, San Diego police public affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.

Oak Ridge, TN – Overnight fire at assisted living facility extinguished by sprinkler system

Oak Ridge city officials say a sprinkler system was key in putting out a fire at an assisted living facility Friday before it spread to other parts of the building.  The fire was reported around 12:38 a.m. Friday at NHC Healthcare on Laboratory Road. An employee reported seeing fire coming from a clothes dryer and then saw water in the dryer area.

The fire crew controlled the water coming from the sprinkler, closed the gas and disconnected power from all three dryers. No one was injured and there was no fire damage around the dryer.  The facility was back to normal operation within 24 hours.

The Oak Ridge Fire Department says this was the second time within 24 hours that a lifesaving device properly performed its function in the case of a fire. A house fire was reported on Thursday on East Drive where a smoke alarm woke up the resident and likely saved his life.

Fire officials want to remind everyone that having working smoke alarms and a working home sprinkler system increase your chances of surviving a fire by 80 percent. They also note that all sprinklers do not activate at once, only the one closest to the fire. Ninety percent of the time, one sprinkler contains the fire.

No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police said they are assessing the damage, and that is too early to know how many cases will be effected.  Officials said only a few shelves out of the entire warehouse were burned. Jackson Hole, WY – Arson fire at gas station limited by working sprinkler system

Someone started a fire at the West Broadway Phillips 66 gas station early Wednesday morning, and police need help identifying a man who was caught on surveillance video.  The fire triggered the gas station’s sprinkler system, so little damage was caused.  Police said it happened after 3 a.m. just outside the business’ front door, where a pallet of firewood sits.  In the video, the man can be seen walking back and forth near the entryway.

He appears to be in his mid-20s with long, brown hair. He was riding a black mountain bike, police said.  Police and Jackson Hole Fire/EMS responded, but the sprinklers took care of the flames.  “The only property damage the gas station received was a pallet of firewood, but the fire could have been more severe if a sprinkler system wasn’t located above the pallet,” said Detective Jason Figueroa. “The subject was out of camera view for a few minutes before leaving. He was the only person to be seen at the gas station before the police and fire department arrived to put out the fire.”

Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief Brady Hansen said arson calls aren’t typical in Jackson.  “In our history, it has occurred, but it is not a common issue,” he said  If you recognize the man or have information about the fire, you’re asked to call the Jackson Police Department at 733-1430 and ask for Detective Figueroa.

Sonoma, CA – Overnight fire at nail salon quickly suppressed by sprinkler system

A blaze in a nail salon in downtown Sonoma was quickly extinguished, mostly by the salon’s sprinklers, on Monday night.  Fire crews responded to the fire in Nail Pro at 201 W. Napa St. around 10:45 p.m., according to Spencer Andreis, battalion chief with Sonoma Valley Fire & Rescue Authority.  “When we arrived, the business was charged with smoke. It was starting to come out the front door,” Andreis said. “Crews forced entry through the front door and went to the back of the business” where the fire was burning, he said.

“The sprinkler system did its job. It took a minimal amount of water to suppress the parts that were still on fire at that point,” Andreis said. The fire involved just one room in the back of the nail salon.  Water from the firefighting efforts leaked out of the attic and under the floors, damaging two adjacent businesses, Chinese restaurant Happy Garden, and a hair salon,

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Andreis said.  A fire broke out in the same nail salon two or three years ago, according to Andreis.  Heather Sarno, property manager of Crosspoint Realty Services, which manages the property, said it is usually the case that the insurer of an individual business must pay for fire damage, though “it depends on what the fire inspector determines to be the cause.
