Yakima, WA – Fire at packaging company controlled with help from sprinkler system

Workers at Michelsen’s Packaging Company came back to work after a fire Tuesday.  Stacks of paper two stories high caught fire in Michelsen’s basement on North 2nd Ave.  The building’s sprinkler system helped control the flames.  It took firefighters more than 10 hours to clear the scene. No one was hurt. They’re still investigating how it started.

DeKalb, IL – Overnight fire at wood products manufacturer contained with help from sprinkler system

The fire started in a dustbin at Premium Wood Products in DeKalb about 1 a.m. Friday, authorities said. Crews from the DeKalb Fire Department responded to an alarm at the business at 436 E. Locust St. at 12:54 a.m. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames near a bin for collecting dust and wood shavings, according to a news release from the fire department.

The fire activated the sprinkler system, which controlled the fire until firefighters could extinguish it, the release said. Firefighters had the fire under control after about 45 minutes and remained on scene for about two more hours to ventilate the building. Crews determined the fire was accidental. Business operations resumed fully after the fire, authorities said.

Fire at high-tech optical manufacturer put out by sprinkler system (Middlefield, CT)

Local firefighters were on the scene of a fire at Zygo Corporation in the eastern part of town early Monday. Four people were reportedly evaluated for injuries but declined medical treatment.  NBC Connecticut is reporting that the fire was minor and that it was put out by the sprinkler system inside the business.  Crews were beginning to clear the scene around 6:45 a.m. Monday.

Fire at Archer Daniels Midland plant contained by sprinkler system (Peoria, IL)

Peoria firefighters and police were dispatched shortly after noon to the sprawling ethanol distillery on Edmund Street near the MacArthur Highway Bridge. The blaze began in an area near a grain silo where a worker had been welding, according to police and company officials. The cause of the blaze has not been officially determined.

ADM spokeswoman Jackie Anderson said the fire started about 11:30 a.m. in the facility’s corn processing area and was contained by the sprinkler system, but firefighters were called for additional assistance. “There were no injuries, and the plant is continuing to run as planned,” Anderson said.

Early morning fire at hydraulic press business extinguished by sprinkler system (Ogden, UT)

A sprinkler system is given credit for putting out a fire at a business early Saturday morning.  The fire was in a hydraulic press at a business. The sprinkler system extinguished the fire rapidly.  The sprinkler system in this fire worked exactly how it was designed and played a large roll in extinguishing the fire and confining it to a small area.

Sprinkler system controls fire at chemical distribution facility (St. Albans, WV)

A fire at a St. Albans chemical distribution facility appears to be under control, Kanawha County emergency officials said late this morning. Sprinklers at the Brenntag operation on 1st Street contained the blaze, and crews were ventilating the building before entering to further investigate, said Dale Petry, Kanawha County’s emergency services coordinator.
