St. Cloud, MN – Sprinkler system douses overnight apartment fire; No injuries

An apartment fire late Sunday caused about $6,000 damage at Empire Apartments, 54 Fourth Ave. N. The person who lived in the apartment left the apartment with the stove on, according to fire investigators. Items on the stove caught fire and burned the cabinetry above the stove. Two sprinkler heads activated and put the fire out. No injuries were reported.

Durham, NC – Residence hall fire at Duke University controlled with help from sprinkler system

About 175 students were evacuated from Randolph Residence Hall on Duke’s East Campus early Monday morning following a fire in a first floor laundry room.  The fire alarm sounded about 2:25 a.m., and all building occupants were safely evacuated to the common room of Blackwell Residence Hall, which is adjacent to Randolph, for about an hour before the building was cleared for reentry.

Duke University Police and the Durham Fire Department responded to the fire alarm, when a dryer caught fire. The building’s sprinkler system engaged causing some water damage, which was primarily limited to the laundry room on the west end of the building and the adjoining hallway. A locked door on the second floor was also damaged when firefighters had to forcefully enter the room to ensure no one was inside, but no rooms were damaged by the fire.

An emergency services company has already begun to address the water damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Riverside, CA – Overnight apartment fire extinguished by sprinkler system; No injuries

Two families were displaced after a sprinkler system put out a garbage can fire at an apartment in Riverside early Sunday morning, Nov. 15.  Riverside firefighters were dispatched to 9800 County Farm Rd. in Riverside about 1:05 a.m., fire officials wrote on an incident fact sheet.

Firefighters discovered that the fire had been in a bathroom wastebasket and had been put out by the apartment’s sprinkler system, the fact sheet said.  It took fire officials two hours to clear the water from the building.  The families were placed in lodging by Red Cross, the fact sheet said. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Honolulu, HI – Sprinkler system activates to suppress flames in office fire

A two-alarm fire in the Waiakamilo Business Center was reported just after 10 p.m. Tuesday. Nine fire companies responded and 35 firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the five-story building in Kalihi. The fire was located and contained to a ground floor unit. The building’s sprinkler system activated and helped suppress the flames. The fire was fully extinguished by 10:55 p.m. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. A damage estimate is not available yet

Belmont, CA – 4 a.m. fire at senior residential complex controlled with help from sprinkler system; No injuries

Firefighters battled to get a blaze under control Friday morning at a senior living community complex where 35 people were evacuated and was likely started by some cardboard boxes set near a wall heater, a fire captain said.

The San Mateo County Fire department said the 2-alarm apartment fire in Belmont in the 2400 block of Carlmont Drive. started about 4 a.m. on the second floor. No one was injured.

Capt. Patrick Halleran credited the building’s sprinkler system for saving lives. He added the boxes were in the apartment because an older gentleman had recently moved in.

Lynchburgh, VA – Overnight trash chute fire at apartment building is put out by sprinkler system

Everyone made it out safely after a fire broke out at Jefferson House Apartments in Lynchburg. It happened around midnight.  Officials say the fire started in a trash chute that connects all of the floors.  The fire was put out by the sprinkler system before crews got there.

About 30 people evacuated from the apartments, but were allowed back in around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday after each floor was cleared.

Rockland, ME – House fire quickly extinguished by sprinkler system

Two house fires were quickly extinguished but could have had severe consequences if not for safety systems in each residence, the local fire chief said in a press release Monday. The first fire call came in shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday when Rockland police officers heard an exterior bell connected to the sprinkler system as they passed by a home on Union Street.

A resident had dumped the contents of an ashtray into a plastic bag and left the bag on the first floor before going to bed on the second floor. The bag ignited within 30 minutes but was put out by an automatic sprinkler system. The activation of the sprinkler awoke the resident who came downstairs to begin a cleanup.

While the sprinkler alarm went off, Fire Chief Adam Miceli said that the only smoke detector found in the residence had not gone off during the fire. The chief said that could have been because the sprinklers doused the fire before enough smoke had been generated to activate the smoke alarm. He said that the fire was located near the stairs and that there was not a second exit.

Asheville, NC – Sprinkler quells fire that started in art kiln at charter school

An indoor kiln’s exhaust fan at Evergreen Community Charter School failed Thursday night, causing heat to build up and the sprinkler to activate. The Asheville Fire Department responded to the school shortly after 8 p.m., said spokeswoman Kelley Klope.

The sprinkler system cooled the kiln and prevented a fire, she said. Had there not been a sprinkler system, the heat buildup could have ignited nearby combustibles and the overhead ceiling, which could have caused a structure fire, Klope said.

The school’s art room sustained minor heat damage to some overhead lighting and minor water damage. Sprinkler systems use less water to suppress early onset fires than fire crews do, Klope said.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, if a home fire occurs, the risk of dying decreases by about 80 percent when the home is equipped with a fire sprinkler system.
