Henderson, NV – Sprinklers activate to help control fire at Vons grocery store

** Note – Sprinklers are not activated by smoke – Only the substantial heat from a serious fire **

A Vons grocery store in Henderson caught fire Thursday and had to close for the night, according to a city of Henderson news release. The Henderson Fire Department responded to the store at 2667 E. Windmill Parkway, near Pecos Road, shortly after 8 p.m. The fire was in the roof where construction was recently done, the release said. The sprinkler system was activated by smoke in the rear of the store.

The grocery store was evacuated and closed for repairs. The store reopened Friday morning. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire was deemed accidental, but an estimated cost of damage could not be determined until Vons can inventory the lost food products, the release said.

Reno, NV – Sprinkler system activates to help contain hotel fire

An investigation is underway into a fire Tuesday night in the Ponderosa Hotel in Reno’s Midtown district.  Crews responded around 8 p.m. after a fire was reported in one of rooms at the Ponderosa on South Virginia Street.

(The fire sprinkler system activated and helped contain the fire to one room.)

About 20 people had to be evacuated but the fire was contained to just the one room.  Firefighters say they got a quick jump on the fire and were able to keep the damage to a minimum.

“We were able to evacuate the people out of the floor the fire was on,” Battalion Chief Tim O’Brien said.  “We were able to quickly shut down the sprinkler system once the fire was out and prevent any further water damage to the structure,” he said.

The residents who had to be evacuated later were allowed to return to their rooms. As of late Tuesday, the fire’s cause had not been determined.  No one was hurt.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system douses overnight fire at downtown bar

An automatic sprinkler helped prevent an overnight fire from spreading at a downtown bar, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said. Fire dispatchers were notified at 3:16 a.m. today that the water-flow alarm for the fire sprinkler system activated at Backstage Bar & Billiards, 601 Fremont St., fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Firefighters forced their way into the three-story building and found clothing and other items too close to a water heater had caught fire, he said. The sprinkler had already doused the fire, he said. Damage was estimated at $5,000, but the blaze could have done substantial damage without the sprinkler system, Szymanski said.

Minden, NV – Sprinklers knock down blaze at popular restaurant

A kitchen fire shortly before midnight closed Katie’s Country Kitchen for the breakfast and lunch rush on Tuesday.

The popular Minden restaurant inside the Carson Valley Inn reopened at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, Marketing Director Bill Henderson said.

“Our sincere thanks to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the East Fork Fire and Paramedic District who responded very quickly to the alarm,” Henderson said.

East Fork Fire District personnel responded after security called 911 at 11:45 p.m. in response to a fire in the prep cook area.

Deputy Chief Dave Fogerson said the fire sprinkler system extinguished the blaze. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was still coming from the exhaust system.

The restaurant was evacuated while firefighters confirmed the fire was out and had not spread into the surrounding structure.

Henderson said no one was hurt in the fire and that the system functioned as designed with no major damage.

Sun Valley, NV – Sprinklers control multiple arson fires at apartment complex

The Sparks Fire Department says fires at a Sun Valley apartment complex were intentionally set.  The fires started around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Boulder Creek Apartments.  Crews found that the internal fire sprinkler system had extinguished two fires in two separate areas of the unit.  A third fire was noticed in another room but had self-extinguished.

The call was reported to Sparks dispatch by the fire alarm monitoring company as water flow.  Fire crews found smoke coming out of the open entry door of one of the apartment units.  Firefighters found no one inside.  Sparks Fire says several people were evacuated, but have been allowed back into their units.  There were no reports of injuries.

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at senior apartment complex

A fire sprinkler system alarm alerted firefighters to an incident at the Decatur Pines Senior Apartments at 5:22 p.m. Friday. It appeared there had been a fire in the bathroom of the apartment, but it was extinguished by the fire sprinklers.

Firefighters went to the third floor of the building, they found a fire sprinkler flowing water in one of the apartments. A woman was transported to University Medical Center for a first degree burn to one of her arms. A first-degree burn is similar to a sunburn, but a first-degree burn to a senior citizen is considered a serious matter and requires medical attention.

Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental. The woman was trying to use a can of aerosol deodorant, but the push button was not operating properly. The woman used a tool to pry it open, and the can started to spew out product into the air near a small candle burning on a bathroom sink. When the aerosol product reached the flame of the candle, it ignited and caused a flash fire, which lasted for only a second.

The flash fire activated the fire sprinkler, which quickly doused the flames and also sprayed water onto the woman, which probably limited her exposure to the heat of the fire which minimized her burn. Damage was estimated at $1,000 and was confined to the bathroom. There were no other reported injuries during the incident. Seniors that evacuated the three-story apartment building were allowed to return a short time later after firefighters were sure that fire was out.

Unattended cooking fire extinguished by sprinkler system at Oasis Grand Destinations Resort (Mesquite, NV)

Two people were transported to Mesa View for evaluation of smoke inhalation after an unattended pot with oil and water in it caught fire Saturday evening at the Oasis Grand Destinations Resort. The entry team reported that the fire was out and that multiple sprinkler heads had been activated. The automatic sprinklers extinguished the fire and limited the fire damage to the stove top and some cabinets immediately above the stove. Upon searching the unit, firefighters discovered a 47 year old male face down and unconscious in the bedroom.  It is believed that he had an underlying medical condition which prevented him from responding to the fire and evacuating from the building.  His 8 year old son was also transported to Mesa View as a precaution in stable condition.
