Lafayette, CA – Sprinkler system helps stop fire in single-family home, Fire crews rescue dog

Crews responded around 8:45 a.m. to reports of a fire at a house on Kim Road and arrived to find that a sprinkler system inside the home had helped prevent the blaze from spreading, fire Capt. George Laing said.  Firefighters rescued a pet dog from a fire that damaged a hillside home in Lafayette this morning, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman said.

The home’s hillside location and its distance from the nearest fire hydrant made it tough to access and douse the flames, but crews were able to get the fire under control around 9:20 a.m., Laing said.

“All in all, this was a great job by the crews and a save by the sprinkler system,” the fire captain said.

Costa Mesa, CA – Fire at Home Depot store held in check by sprinkler system

Costa Mesa firefighters doused a small blaze at a Home Depot store and a home on Thanksgiving.  The fire started around 9:30 a.m. when an extension cord malfunctioned at The Home Depot at 2300 Harbor Blvd., according to authorities.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the store’s garden center and forced their way in. A crew of about 17 quickly extinguished the flames, which had been held in check by a sprinkler system, according to the Fire Department. The fire caused about $1,000 in damage.

Sprinkler quells fire at Mugs Coffee Lounge:

Mugs Coffee Lounge, 261 S. College Ave., is open after a fire in the basement was extinguished Tuesday morning.  The cause of the fire that destroyed a fake plant, caused light smoke damage and activated Mugs’ fire sprinkler system around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday is still under investigation. The cost of damage is estimated at $1,000, according to Poudre Fire Authority spokesman Patrick Love.

“One fire sprinkler saved a huge amount of potential damage,” Love said. “This particular incident could have had extremely devastating effects not only on this building, but there are also numerous businesses nearby.”

Veerag Mehta, an official with Polymer Dynamix, said that a dust collector outside of the building caught fire this morning, which caused an explosion through ventilation ducts.  Nobody was seriously hurt, but several people had ringing in their ears and they’re being checked for concussions, Mehta said.

The company does not know why the dust collector caught fire and exploded. The explosion — limited, because of sprinkler systems in the ducts — sent a plume of dust through part of the building, covering several workers, Mehta said.

“Knock on wood, everyone seems to be OK,” Mehta said.

Providence, RI – Sprinklers activated properly during Brown University locker room fire

During Thursday’s electrical fire in the men’s track and field locker room in the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center, all fire prevention measures functioned properly, said Stephen Maiorisi, vice president of facilities management. Though several of the athletes present at the time of the fire observed that the sprinkler system did not immediately activate, Stephen Morin, director of environmental health and safety, wrote in an email to The Herald that the heat-activated sprinkler heads did respond to the fire.

The fire was “10 or 15 feet away” from the heat detector, said Luke Muzikowski ’17, a member of the team who was present at the time of the fire. Both the detector and the sprinklers are activated when the room reaches a certain temperature, Devlin said, adding that the alarm and sprinkler systems were therefore not at the threshold temperature to activate the alarm by the time the runners left the locker room and the building was evacuated.

“It worked exactly the way it was supposed to,” Maiorisi said.

Fire in multi-tenant building contained by sprinkler system (Lombard, IL)

At approximately 8:15 in the morning on November 14, the fire sprinkler system at a multi-tenant building contained a fire to a single tenant space until fire crews arrived and fully extinguished the fire. The fire, which appears to have begun in a sauna room, was kept from spreading due to the quick response of fire sprinklers.

The fire damage was limited to the immediate area of the sauna room and the proprietor of the facility anticipated they will reopen for business the same day as the fire; the other businesses in the retail center were not affected and will be open as usual.

Equipment and building damage as a result of the fire is estimated to be less than $3000.00. The building owner and business proprietor were on site and began scheduling clean up and repairs before fire crews left the scene.

Sprinklers contain fire in historic building, two workers rescued (Minneapolis, MN)

Authorities say welding is to blame for a fire at a downtown Minneapolis building Thursday morning.

Fire crews were called to the Ceresota Building on the 500 block of 2nd Street at about 7:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, heavy black smoke was showing on the eighth floor of a 10-story structure. Crews went into battle the fire from the interior.

Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, and nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire. Authorities say two workers who were not injured in the fire escaped to the roof. They were rescued by emergency personnel.

Fire officials said Friday that the cause of the fire was accidental due to welding. The fire started on the eighth floor and three sprinkler heads went off, holding off the fire until crews arrived.

Nearly 200 people rushed to safety after a fire at Remington Park Friday, officials said. Some thought it was a drill, but they quickly found out it wasn’t.

“We thought it was still a drill until we got outside and all the fire trucks were here,” said one evacuated employee. Officials say Bricktown Brewery at Remington Park employees found a fire in the smoker around 8:30 Friday morning.

“Tried to fight it with a couple of their fire extinguishers, the smoke got a little bit overwhelming for them, so they backed out and called 911,” said Maj. Tammy McKinney, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department. Officials say the employees had practiced fire drills so they knew exactly where they were supposed to go and security made sure everyone was accounted for.

Crews quickly knocked the fire out. The sprinkler system kept it from spreading. “The fire suppression system did its job and so now we just have to do a little bit of cleanup in that area,” said Kym Coch, Remington Park spokeswoman.
