La Mesa, CA – Car fire at apartment complex controlled with help from sprinkler system

A car fire at a La Mesa apartment complex was knocked down by a sprinkler system and quick work by firefighters before it could do any structural damage, Heartland fire officials said Saturday.

Firefighters from La Mesa, El Cajon and Cal Fire responded to the blaze shortly after 8 p.m. Friday at the Alterra Apartments in the 8700 block of Fletcher Parkway, according to Heartland Fire spokesman Sonny Saghera.

The fire sprinkler system was already activated when firefighters arrived within four minutes of being dispatched, Saghera said.

It took fire crews less than 10 minutes to get the car fire out and the sprinkler system off before any damage was done to the apartment units above the garage. There were no injuries, evacuations or water damage, and no damage to other vehicles. The cause and damage amount were not released by Heartland Fire.

Las Vegas, NV – Fire at strip mall contained to bathroom with help from sprinkler

A business in the southwest part of the valley was damaged Saturday night in a fire.

Around 8:30 p.m., the Clark County Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 8090 S. Durango Drive, near Windmill Lane. Upon arrival,  personnel reported a single-story strip mall with a small volume of smoke coming from the structure.

Crews forced entry and made an offensive fire attack. The fire was found in Suite 111, the location of Prime Social Marketing, in a bathroom. Crews knocked down the fire with the aid of sprinkler activation.

Firefighters were able to prevent extension to other suites of the building. The fire is under investigation. Damages have not been estimated.

There were no injuries reported.

Wednesday’s fire in a Maple Street building containing cardboard recycling appears to have been deliberately set.

“When crews arrived on the scene, they found a pile of cardboard and paper that measured approximately eight metres wide by three metres tall fully engulfed in flames. The fire was contained inside the metal clad building, and crews decided the most effective method to douse the fire was to use the waterway at the tip of the ladder fire truck,” said deputy fire chief Vrabel says.

Firefighters were called out about 6:25 p.m. After a few mintures, they changed from dousing the fire with handheld hoses to a nozzle attached to the hose at the end of the ladder on the aerial ladder truck. The nozzle was then directed into the interior of the building and brought the fire under control.

“We initiated a defensive attack. We were concerned about the structural stability of the metal beams that were supporting the roof so we weren’t committing any members inside,” Vrabel said. “Police did have some persons of interest in their custody while we were carrying out our fire operations.”

Vrabel said that three youth “of interest” had been located by the RCMP.

“It definitely appears to be intentionally set by one or more persons,” Vrabel said.

The building is privately owned and is leased out to Sun Coast Waste Management.

On scene were 21 firefighters with four pieces of apparatus committed to the incident. The fire department left the scene after 9:30 p.m.

The fire was still smouldering as of this afternoon but firefighters managed to connect to a sprinkler system in the building and that was directed onto the pile to control it.

Rice Lake, WI – Fire at assisted living facility kept from spreading by sprinkler system; No injuries

A fire Tuesday evening, March 15, in a Rice Lake assisted living building at 415 E. South St. caused damage to part of the building. A press release from the Rice Lake Fire Department stated the fire was reported at 6:30 p.m. and 16 firefighters responded and suppressed the interior fire. The sprinkler system helped the fire from spreading. The fire was under control by 7 p.m. Sixteen residents were evacuated during the fire with help from care workers and Rice Lake Police officers. No one was injured.

The RLFD said the fire started on the outside of the building, possibly by accident from discarded smoking materials. The fire remains under investigation. A Lakeview Medical Center paramedic unit, two fire engines, one ladder truck and one fire command vehicle were called to the scene

Annapolis, MD – No injuries in fire at Extended Stay America hotel controlled by sprinkler system

A fire in an Annapolis hotel room last Tuesday resulted in damage to nearly a dozen rooms, a county fire department spokesman said. Firefighters were dispatched at 6:50 p.m. to the Extended Stay America hotel in the 100 block of Admiral Cochrane Drive.

The hotel’s sprinkler system primarily controlled the fire, a fire spokesman said. It took about 13 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Nine rooms in the hotel sustained smoke and water damage.  Nobody was injured, the spokesman said.

The fire caused an estimated $2,500 worth of damage, said county fire department spokesman Capt. Russ Davies. The fire was ruled accidental.

Pittsburgh, PA – Fire at high-rise luxury condominium building controlled with help from sprinkler system

No one was injured in a 3-alarm fire in a kitchen Friday night at Piatt Place, a high-rise condominium complex Downtown. The fire was reported at 7:30 p.m. at 301 Fifth Ave., the city’s Department of Public Safety said. Crews were working at midnight to ventilate the building and assess damages. The fire was labeled as 3-alarm due to the size of the building, the department said. It started in a kitchen in a residence on the sixth floor; the building’s sprinkler system assisted in containing the fire. The cause was under investigation.

Eugene, OR – Sprinkler system keeps fire at care facility from spreading

Almost two dozen people were evacuated from a Eugene care facility after a fire Wednesday night. The Eugene-Springfield Fire Department said the fire started around 7:40 p.m. at the All Seasons Residential Care Facility on the corner of Madison and W. Broadway. Crews said the fire started in the basement and a sprinkler system kept the flames from spreading. Residents were evacuated to a nearby church but were eventually allowed back into their units.

Salt Lake City, UT – Fire at halfway house contained to bedroom by sprinkler system

Twenty-six women residing at the Orange Street Community Correctional Center were relocated Wednesday evening after a fire damaged a section of the center. The fire broke out at approximately 6:30 p.m. in a bedroom at the center. A corrections officer used a handheld extinguisher to put out the fire as staff evacuated residents from the building. 

 The fire was contained to a single bedroom. The building’s automatic sprinkler system activated and flooded the housing wing.  Salt Lake City Fire Department responded. Investigators declared the fire accidental and say it was caused by a charging electronic device. The officer who extinguished the fire was taken to a local hospital to be checked out as a precautionary measure.

The residents were allowed to gather a bag of belongings and then were taken to the Atherton Community Treatment Center in West Valley City. It is unknown at this time when the center will reopen.

Macon, GA – (READER REPORTED) 8th floor fire contained to one apartment with help from sprinklers

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department is still at an apartment complex after a fire started on the eighth floor Monday night.

The fire started around 6 o’clock at the Dempsey Apartments, located at 523 Cherry Street.

“There was significant damage to the floor,” chief Marvin Riggins said. “Fire investigators are checking to see if other floors were affected, and how the fire started.”

Elgin, IL – (NO MEDIA COVERAGE) Sprinklers limit spread of fire at car dealership

On Sunday February 28, 2016 at 1920 hours, the Elgin Fire Department responded to 1385 E. Chicago Street (Biggers Chevrolet) for flames visible from the roof. Elgin Police Department units arrived first and confirmed there was fire on the roof.  Police and fire units were delayed getting into the property due to the presence of security gates.

The fire response was upgraded to a Box Alarm level bringing in seven additional area fire departments. The fire was quickly extinguished and upon initial investigation the buildings sprinkler system had activated confining the fire and limiting its spread.  Additionally, ladder companies accessed the roof and found fire extension around a vent stack which was also quickly confined and extinguished.  The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes.

The damage was confined to a heating unit in the Shop area, a spray booth and the roof covering. The preliminary damage report is estimated to be approximately $40,000 to the structure and contents.  No vehicles were damaged during this event.

Elgin Fire Department investigators were called to determine the cause and the origin of the fire and no firefighters or civilians were injured due to this event.
