Manitowoc, WI – Fire in utility closet at apartment building contained by sprinkler system

Officials say a Manitowoc apartment was damaged by fire on Tuesday night.  Crews were called to 2240 S. 42nd Street just before 6 p.m. Firefighters found that the sprinkler system was spraying water in a utility room. There was damage to the building’s main electrical feed and there was a natural gas leak.

Everyone inside the building got out safely. Firefighters eventually found a fire in a lower-unit apartment. The sprinkler system had contained it to the immediate area, and firefighters used a water extinguisher to put out the remaining fire. Crews were on the scene for about 90 minutes.

The apartment involved had fire and smoke damage, but there was no damage to other parts of the building. Firefighters say it appears that an electrical problem caused the fire, but the fire is still being investigated.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA – (NO MEDIA COVERAGE) Single sprinkler activates to extinguish residential fire

*** NO MEDIA COVERAGE — FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED ** On August 5, 2016 at 3:20 p.m. Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Medic Engine 174 and Medic Truck 174 were dispatched with automatic aid resources to a reported residential structure fire in a two story single family detached home. The first arriving unit reported that a small fire had been extinguished by the activation of a single residential sprinkler. The fire was confined to the contents originally ignited. Fire, smoke, and water damage was minimal. Medic Engine 174 and Investigator 2150 shut down the sprinkler system, replaced the activated head with a new head from the spare sprinkler box, and recharged the fire sprinkler system. The Fire Inspector for the area followed up with the residents and coordinated an inspection with the Building Inspector.

Moline, IL – Fire at apartment complex controlled by sprinkler system; No injuries

Around 2:30 p.m., firefighters called to 4709 61st St. found nothing showing at a two-story multi-residential apartment complex. They made entry into the apartment to find smoke all the way to the floor and an activated building sprinkler, but no fire. Ventilation was performed and firefighters found a plastic ice cooler on an electric stove.  It was determined the cooler had melted and subsequently caught on fire.

The residents of the apartment were home at the time of the fire and called 911 before evacuating the apartment. Damage to the apartment included the cabinets above the stove with fire, smoke damage throughout and water damage to the kitchen and living room area from the sprinkler system.

No injuries to residents or firefighting personnel were reported. The Moline Fire Department was assisted by Moline Police, the apartment complex maintenance staff and the Red Cross.

Unalaska, AK – Laundry fire at Grand Aleutian Hotel extinguished with help from sprinkler system

The Unalaska Department of Public Safety responded to a fire in the laundry room of the Grand Aleutian Hotel yesterday evening. The 911 call was received shortly before 5 o’clock, and a fire truck was on the scene within 6 minutes.

Deputy Chief Jennifer Shockley said responders found an active fire and black smoke. The building’s sprinkler system had been activated.  “They were able to get in there, determine that the source of the fire was a large commercial dryer, and get the fire put out,” she said. “I want to say the fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes after they arrived.”

The fire was contained to the laundry room and did not spread anywhere else in the building. Shockley says that water and smoke damage appear to be limited to the laundry room and the surrounding area.

A staff member trained in arson investigation has inspected the scene, and Shockley says there is no reason to believe the fire was anything but an accident.

Hotel guests and staff were already being evacuated when responders arrived, and the emergency response was quick and effective. “It was a rapid response on our part,” Shockley said. “The fire got extinguished rapidly. The hotel had done the things that they needed to do in terms of getting the evacuation started. That’s great, it says really good things about the Grand Aleutian staff and dealing with a fire alarm.”

Of the eight fire and EMS responders at the scene, Shockley especially thanked the six who were volunteers from the community.

Charlottetown, PE, Canada – Sprinklers limit spread of fire that started on deck of loft apartment building

At least six people have been displaced after a fire late Friday afternoon at the Y Lofts condo building in Charlottetown.  There were no injuries.  Charlottetown Fire Chief Randy MacDonald said the call to the 18-unit condo building, located at the corner of Euston and Prince Streets, was received at 5:20 p.m.

When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building, which was formerly the YMCA. The building was evacuated prior to fire crews arriving, he said. MacDonald added the fire seemed to have started on the outside deck of a third floor unit. It then spread to the roof. The fire was “held to the outside” by the building’s sprinkler system, he said.

Shortly after 6 p.m., MacDonald said the fire was “knocked down” and mostly contained with crews dealing with hotspots. He also noted a challenge to fighting the fire was the warm weather. To keep fire fighters safe, they took “quick breaks” and kept hydrated throughout the incident, MacDonald said.

Fire officials are investigating the cause.

Honolulu, HI – Sprinkler system suppresses fire on 15th floor of 42-story high rise; No injuries reported

More than 40 firefighters responded on Tuesday afternoon to a two-alarm fire at a high-rise building in Kakaako, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Officials said the fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. at a 42-story building located at 425 South St. Firefighters arrived to find smoke emanating from the 15th floor. However, the fire had already been extinguished by a sprinkler and a bystander who used a cabinet fire hose.  Firefighters remained on scene to ensure complete extinguishment and removal of excess water.

No one was reported in the unit at the time of the fire.  Damage is estimated at $21,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Harwich, MA – Fire at Cape Cod resort doused by sprinkler system

Shortly before 2 p.m., Harwich Fire-Rescue responded to a fire alarm from The Wequassett Resort & Golf Club on Route 28. While enroute, additional information was received of a possible kitchen fire at The Twenty Eight Atlantic Restaurant located at the Resort, which upgraded the alarm to a line box including apparatus and firefighters from Chatham and Brewster Fire. Upon arrival Harwich Firefighters found the fire in the kitchen had been contained by sprinklers, thus averting a potentially serious situation, and downgraded the response to a first alarm assignment, canceling the incoming additional towns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appeared that aerosol cans stored too close to a heat source ignited which activated the sprinkler and alarm system. Firefighters stretched a single hand-line as a precaution and removed the box of aerosol cans and a commercial oven to the outside of the structure. The fire scene was secured and turned back to the Resort with all units clearing within the hour.

San Diego, CA – Fire at Petco Park food court extinguished by sprinkler system during MLB All-Star events

At least one restaurant at the Petco Park food court was to remain closed Sunday afternoon during some All-Star related events, due to a grease fire in a kitchen.  The fire activated the sprinkler system, and was out by the time San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters arrived on scene, according to spokesman Lee Swanson.

Firefighters were dispatched to Petco Park at about 10:15 a.m. Two engines, one truck and a battalion chief, were sent, but the first crew to arrive cancelled some of the responding firefighters when they discovered the fire had already been extinguished, Swanson said.

It was unclear which restaurant was affected, but Swanson said the San Diego County Health Department would have to re-certify the restaurant before it could serve food again.  San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fennessy tweeted photos from the scene, showing the fire had been contained to a small area.

Two events were scheduled to take place at Petco Park Sunday, in advance of the Major League Baseball All-Star game on Tuesday. The All-Star Futures game was scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by a softball game at 7 p.m. featuring celebrities, athletes and former MLB players.

Speers Borough, PA – Sprinkler system contains blaze at chemical plant; No injuries reported

Authorities say a fire caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to a chemical plant, but no injuries were reported.

Fourteen fire departments responded shortly before 1:30 p.m. Friday to the blaze at National Polymers Inc. off Interstate 70 near the Monongahela River in Washington County.

The blaze had already been contained by the building’s automatic sprinkler system and prevented the flames from reaching chemicals stored in the plant. Fire crews had the flames out in less than an hour but remained for two more hours venting smoke and making sure the area was clear.

Chief Robert Whiten Jr., of the Charleroi Fire Department, said the blaze appeared to have been accidental but the exact cause wasn’t immediately clear.
