Madison, WI – Sprinkler system suppresses early morning fire at assisted living facility

The Madison Fire Department says an electrical fault caused a fire at an assisted living facility on the city’s west side early Friday morning. According to fire officials, the sprinkler system contained the fire to that apartment, which limited the damage to the property.

Firefighters were called to Tabor Oaks Assisted Living on Mineral Point Road at about 6:40 a.m. after a fire broke out in a second-floor apartment. Staff members were able to get every resident out safely. No one was injured. Most residents were able to go back inside their apartments soon after firefighters left the scene.

Fire investigators say a fault in a bedside table lamp caused the fire.

Fremont, NE – Overnight fire in high-rise apartment building contained by sprinkler system

The automatic sprinkler system kept an early morning fire at Stanton Tower from becoming worse. Fremont Fire Department crews were called to the eighth floor of Stanton Tower at 3:56 a.m. Friday. “The sprinkler system is priceless,” Capt. Pat Tawney said. Tawney said it appears the resident had left a placed a piece of wood on top of the stove and then a microwave on top of that. So far, it’s undetermined how the fire started.

Smoke was contained to the eighth floor of the high-rise apartment building. Typically, Tawney said, the department recommends residents at either Gifford Tower or Stanton Tower remain in their apartments and place a towel at the bottom of the door when there is a fire in another unit until firefighters ask them to evacuate. Sprinklers and the concrete construction of the buildings help keep fires from spreading.

Chesterfield, VA – Sprinklers keep fire in check after stolen van crashes into High School

Fire alarms went off around 1:30 AM, when firefighters arrived at L.C. Bird High School in Chesterfield they found a van on fire that had crashed through the front doors.  Officials say the tires were still running and that’s what caused the fire. Chesterfield Police say the van that crashed into the school was stolen.

The fire caused smoke to spread throughout the school and the sprinkler system to go off.  There were no reported injuries and the fire was contained to the area where the van crashed into the building.

“It appears the fire was more than likely caused by the tires continuing to spin as it was inside, and the tires caught fire and spread to the rest of the vehicle,” Lt. Jason Elmore with Chesterfield said. There was no one inside the building at the time of the crash.

The school will be closed through Sunday night. The principal sent a note home to parents saying they hope to reopen on Monday. Police are asking anyone with any information on the driver to contact them immediately.

Langley, BC, Canada – Fire in dorm at Trinity Western University stopped by sprinkler system

A sprinkler system installed in the dorms at Trinity Western University a few years ago is being credited for stopping a fire from spreading last Wednesday morning. Township firefighters were called out to one of the dormitories on campus, after a couch erupted in flames around 7:30 a.m.

The couch was in one of the common areas and so far, fire investigators don’t know what caused it to catch on fire. “It’s still under investigation,” said Assistant Fire Chief Pat Walker. The sprinklers put out the fire as firefighters arrived.

Sarasota, FL – Fire at Lido Beach Holiday Inn controlled with help from sprinkler system

Daniel Sperry was walking along Lido Beach Tuesday morning when he heard a “bang” and turned around to see smoke billowing from a sixth floor room at the Holiday Inn on Ben Franklin Drive.  Sarasota County fire officials said they couldn’t determine the cause of the fire – the state fire marshall will investigate – but no injuries were reported.

Sarsota County Fire Dept. Capt. Jerry Jensen said the department had the fire out in nine minutes.  “The initial stop was done by the sprinkler system within the building itself. Our crews were in there quickly and finished off the work the sprinkler system did start. So we had the fire out rather quickly.”

Power was initially out on the sixth floor but was later restored. Three rooms were vacated on the sixth floor. The Fire Department reported minor smoke damage to the hallway.

A hotel employee said there was a meeting for the International Association of Police Chiefs on the seventh floor of the building above the reported explosion. Members of the association were seen exiting the hotel with other residents during the initial evacuation.

Rockland, ME – Sprinkler extinguishes fire in 44-unit downtown apartment building; No injuries

A fire damaged one apartment and a business Monday evening in a historic downtown apartment complex. The fire chief said a sprinkler head extinguished the fire in the one apartment where the fire broke out.

There were no injuries but the fire at the Thorndike Building kept Rockland firefighters at the scene for more than two hours. Residents of the 44-unit apartment complex were evacuated. The fire was reported at 5:25 p.m. by a resident of a second-floor apartment at the Thorndike, a four-story brick complex that has businesses on the Main Street level and apartments on the upper two floors.

The fire is not believed to be of suspicious origin, said Rockland Fire Chief Adam Miceli. The state fire marshal’s office has been called in to assist in the investigation but Miceli said there was work being done outside the building near the second floor rear apartment and which may be connected to the fire. While there was smoke in the hallways, there was no real smoke damage in those areas.

San Luis Obispo, CA – Fire at auto repair shop contained with help from sprinkler system

At 3:15 on Sunday, San Luis Obispo Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out at Villa Automotive in San Luis Obispo. The automatic sprinkler system and firefighters confined the fire to the attic area before it could further damage the automotive repair shop, putting it out within 15 minutes of their arrival. Fire officials say the fire was caused by an employee sweating copper pipe, where slag fell into the wall area and pushed the fire into the attic. Structural damage is estimated to be around $2,000. There were no injuries.
