Fire extinguished by sprinkler system at grocery store (Northborough, MA)

A wok in the Asian food department of a grocery store started a fire the morning of August 27, and firefighters were called to the scene. When they arrived, the fire had already been eliminated by the store’s fire sprinkler system and a cooking fire suppression system. Occupants were able to evacuate the building unharmed, and no structural damage to the building occurred.

*** NO MEDIA COVERAGE AVAILABLE *** The Oakbrook Terrace Fire Protection District reported a fire alarm activation at roughly 11:30 PM on Sunday, Nov. 25 at an approximately 60,000 square foot fresh market grocery store. A fire in the cooler / meat preparation area was suppressed by two ceiling mounted fire sprinkler heads. No hand lines were required for final extinguishment.

Firefighters said the sprinkler system prevented a late night fire from spreading the to rest of the grocery store. Investigators were able to determine that the blaze was started by an electrical malfunction in the charger cord for a battery operated pallet jack in the loading dock area. The employees and customers were evacuated and there were no reported injuries.

Supercenter fire quickly contained by sprinkler system (Marion, IL)

Shoppers and employees at the Marion WalMart Supercenter had to be evacuated from the building Tuesday morning. The Marion fire department says a grease fire is to blame. The initial call came at around 8:15 a.m. The fire was quickly contained, but some of the store’s sprinklers were activated. No one was hurt. Investigators are talking with employees in the deli department to pinpoint the exact cause.
