Baton Rouge, LA – Sprinkler system activates to fight grease fire at LSU apartment complex

A small grease fire turned into a major inconvenience Thursday night for several LSU students.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to The Armstrong Apartment Complex formerly called, Burbank Commons just before 9 p.m.

While there was no fire damage inside the third floor unit where the problem began, water from the sprinkler system damaged the apartment’s contents.

Building managers were investigating how much water seeped into the first- and second-floor units.

Red Cross was initially called to help out the displaced residents, but those services weren’t needed once the affected students found another place to stay for the night. 

Las Vegas, NV – Sprinkler system puts out mattress fire at downtown apartment building

An automatic sprinkler put out a mattress fire at a downtown apartment building early today, preventing the blaze from spreading, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

Nobody was injured, official said.

Firefighters responded about 12:35 a.m. to the Avenue 8 Studio Apartments, 211 N. Eighth St., after several reports of smoke on the fourth floor, officials said. They found the sprinkler had already put out the fire in one of the apartments, officials said.

The occupants were not home, and the cause of the fire has not been determined, officials said.

Damage, estimated at $500, was confined to the mattress, officials said.

Fort Dodge, IA – Sprinkler system credited with extinguishing apartment blaze

A sprinkler system put out a fire in a Fort Dodge apartment building Wednesday night and no one was injured.  The incident at Evergreen Estates, 1543 27th Ave. N., was reported at 10:27 p.m.  Fire Department Capt. Paul Neeson said a fire ignited on the stove in a first floor apartment in the three-story building. He said the heat from the fire caused a sprinkler head to activate and douse the flames.  “It did its job,” he said of the sprinkler.

Pittsburgh, PA – Fire in high-rise apartment complex contained to sixth floor apartment by sprinkler system

One person was taken to the hospital after a fire broke out Wednesday evening at a high-rise apartment complex in the city’s Sheraden section.  The three-alarm fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. at the Goodwill Plaza apartments on Hillsboro Street.  According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the fire broke out in a sixth floor apartment.  The sprinkler system activated, and the fire was contained to that one apartment.  One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. That person is in stable condition.

 

Medford, OR – Single sprinkler credited with extinguishing apartment kitchen fire; No injuries

A Medford apartment was saved by a fire sprinkler system this week after a cooking fire erupted in the kitchen.  According to Medford Fire-Rescue, first responders were dispatched to 1032 North Berkeley Way #1 on Monday.  Fire officials said the occupants were cooking chicken on the kitchen stovetop when the fire broke out. They said a single sprinkler automatically activated above the stove and quickly extinguished the blaze.

The incident was declared under control within minutes of firefighters’ arrival.  There was minor damage to the vent hood above the cooktop, some smoke staining on kitchen cabinets and some water damage throughout the apartment. Three people were at home when the fire occurred, but no one was injured. The owner of the apartment complex contacted a fire restoration company to repair the damages and the family will be displaced during the repairs.

Appleton, WI – Early morning apartment fire suppressed by sprinkler system; No injuries

Around 3:30 Sunday morning the Appleton Fire Department was sent to an apartment building on the 500 block of Winnebago Street for an early morning fire.  When crews arrived the sprinkler system inside the building had doused the flames but it was still filled with smoke.  Everyone was evacuated, but they were allowed to return after fire crews finished.  That fire is still under investigation.  No one was hurt in that blaze.

Jefferson City, MO – Apartment fire suppressed by sprinkler system; No injuries and damage limited

No injuries were reported in a structure fire in the 200 block of North Ventura Avenue early Thursday afternoon. The Jefferson City Fire Department responded to the fire at 12:28 p.m., arriving to find smoke from a single apartment in the 18-unit apartment building, according to a JCFD news release.  Fire crews found the fire controlled by sprinkler activation. The sprinkler system controlled the fire’s spread and limited damage to the apartment’s kitchen area.  Personnel from the Jefferson City Police Department, Cole County Emergency Medical Services and the American Red Cross also assisted.  Four residents were displaced from the apartment. The structural damage was estimated at approximately $15,000.

Madison, WI – Dumpster fire outside apartment building kept from spreading by sprinkler system

A fire in a dumpster outside an apartment building was put out quickly, but it sent smoke into the three-story apartment complex, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 10:45 a.m. Friday to the parking garage of the Normandy Apartments at 4715 Sheboygan Avenue on a report of a dumpster fire.  Firefighters said an automatic sprinkler activation caught the fire early and put it out.  There was heavy smoke inside the garage and moderate smoke conditions throughout the three-story apartment complex.

New Haven, CT – Fire in basement of apartment building knocked down by sprinkler system

City firefighters quickly knocked down a basement fire Wednesday afternoon at the Bella Vista Apartments in eastern New Haven. Crews arrived at Building E of the complex to find a minor fire in the basement there at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Battalion Chief William Gould said at the scene.  Much of the fire had been knocked down by the building’s sprinkler system by the time firefighters arrived but they called in a full assignment of trucks because of the number of people who live in the building.   “The fire extended somewhat in the (chute) but not up to upper floors so they were able to extinguish it in the area of origin,” Gould said.  Firefighters were able to put out the rest of the fire within minutes.   No one was hurt in the fire, Gould confirmed.   “The sprinklers do their jobs, they save lives, keeping the fire in check,” he said.

Pleasantville, NJ – Sprinklers help extinguish mattress fire at high-rise apartment building; No injuries reported

City firefighters extinguished a mattress fire Tuesday evening in one of the city’s new downtown high-rise buildings. No injuries were reported in the fire, which was reported 7:23 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at apartment 514 in the Main at City Center, 49 S. Main St.  Water damage was reported in the unit and in the apartments below, according to police Capt. Matt Hartman.  Pleasantville firefighters brought the fire under control at 7:35 p.m., Hartman said.  They found heavy smoke on the fifth floor when they arrived, and Pleasantville Police Department Squad 2 evacuated the building’s occupants. Their efforts included carrying disabled residents down stairwells.  Pleasantville Fire Department Shift 1, under the direction of Battalion Chief Ken Crawford, extinguished the fire with the help of the building’s sprinkler system.
