Muncie, IN – Sprinkler systems helps extinguish fire in loft apartment building

Terry Moore, Muncie Fire Department battalion chief, said a woman was in the process of moving her mother into an apartment on the seventh (and top) floor of the former Roberts Hotel when she placed a bag of clothing on the stove — and apparently accidentally turned on a burner.  The resulting fire was for the most part extinguished by a ceiling sprinkler.  Fire damage was minimal.

“The sprinkler did what it is supposed to do,” the battalion chief said. A few tenants, some in wheelchairs, stayed outside the building for several minutes.

Anderson, SC – Ductwork fire at manufacturing plant contained by sprinkler system

Officials responded to a fire at a new plant in Anderson County on Wednesday night. The plant’s state-of-the-art sprinkler system contained the fire to the ducts and fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze.

According to dispatchers, several fire departments were on the scene at First Quality Tissue on Masters Boulevard. First Quality produces ultra-premium towel and bath tissue products. Firefighters said they received the call about the flames at 7:30 p.m. and when they arrived on scene, smoke was coming out of the top of the building. Employees working in the building were evacuated. After the fire was out, fire crews allowed First Quality employees to return to the building. Officials said no one was injured in the fire.

Barrhaven, ON, Canada – Fire at irish pub extinguished with help from sprinkler system

A fire at the yet-to-open Heart & Crown in Barrhaven on the evening of Dec. 5, was doused by the building’s sprinkler system and mainly extinguished by the time firefighters arrived, the Ottawa fire department said.  Oily rags that were not discarded properly self combusted, sparking the fire just after 7 p.m., according to the fire department.

Pacifica, CA – Sprinkler helps contain hotel fire; No injuries and hotel remains operational

A fire broke out in the Pacifica Motor Inn, 200 Rockaway Beach, at about 9 a.m. last Tuesday, Dec. 2. Smoke and flames damaged a few rooms, but there were no injuries.

The first fire company that arrived reported smoke showing on the third floor. Fire companies worked their way up to the fire floor and made entry into a third floor room of the three-story hotel and found the fire, which was partially extinguished by the activation of a sprinkler head.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. Additionally, the hotel was able to remain in operation and guests were relocated to other rooms that were not affected by the fire.

Vernon, BC, Canada – Suspicious overnight fire at restaurant extinguished by sprinkler system

Police and the Vernon Fire Department are looking into the cause of a suspicious fire at the New Delhi Restaurant in Vernon.  Deputy fire chief Lawrie Skolrood says the fire started inside the building sometime before 3:15 a.m. when the building’s sprinkler system went off and triggered an alarm.

Firefighters forced their way into the building by busting open the front doors, but by the time they got there, the fire was already out.  “The sprinklers did actually put out the fire. It’s lucky they were up and working for sure,” Skolrood says.

Media, PA – Sprinkler extinguishes fire at senior assisted living center

Residents of one building at Granite Farms Estates were evacuated Sunday night after a wall heater caught fire. Firefighters were dispatched at 10 p.m. for a fire on the third floor of A Building, according to Fire Marshal Alan Mancill. The responding firefighters found smoke on the third floor and the residents of were evacuated.  The sprinkler system in the building extinguished the fire. The fire was placed under control in about five minutes. There were no reported injuries.

Minneapolis, MN – Sprinkler system activates to help contain high-rise apartment fire

A fire in a high-rise apartment building on the 300 block of Lowry Avenue North was reported just before 4 p.m. Monday.  The sprinkler system activated to help control the fire. Minneapolis Public Housing was called to the scene to help residents who will be displaced as a result of this fire and water from the sprinkler system.

Visalia, CA – Sprinklers control fire at mall restaurant helping to minimize damage

Firefighters responded around 6:15 a.m. to the Sequoia Mall on south Mooney Boulevard after  maintenance workers called 911 to report a fire at the PHO KC Noodle and Rice Vietnamese restaurant. A sprinkler installed inside the mall managed to extinguish most of the fire and firefighters checked for flames in nearby areas of the mall.

Tulare County Environmental Health was called to evaluate total damage to the restaurant. Fire officials estimated the damage at $7,000 to the structure and about $1,000 to the contents of the restaurant. They estimated that $6.2 million was saved by fire sprinklers.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a small fan in the kitchen that was left on and malfunctioned overnight.

Kelowna, BC, Canada – Deliberately set fire in nursing home extinguished by sprinkler system

The Kelowna Fire Department received an alarm at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning from White Heather Manor at 3728 Casorso Road. When crews arrived, they were met by the charge nurse who told them that there was a small fire in the nursing home’s activity room.

According to platoon captain Tim Light, the fire had already been extinguished before fire crews arrived by the sprinkler system. After searching the area, the firefighters shut off the water and then set up ventilation to clear smoke from the affected suites and hallways. The residents were evacuated outside at first, but when conditions permitted, they were sheltered in an unaffected area of the facility.

Firefighters stayed on scene to help lessen the water damage from the sprinkler. The Kelowna Fire Department says that this was a deliberately set fire, and that RCMP are now involved in the investigation.
